Water into Wine

John opens Jesus’ public ministry in a surprising place: a wedding in Cana, with a real social problem and no big announcement. Jesus turns water into wine, and the first sign reveals his glory in a way that only a few people really see. Mary sees the need, brings it to Jesus, and then gives a simple word that still stands: “Do whatever he tells you.”

Jesus’ response to Mary is not disrespectful, but it does point to timing. His hour has not yet come, yet his mother trusts him enough to tell the servants to obey whatever he says. The servants fill six stone jars to the brim, jars that had been used for ceremonial washing, and Jesus turns that water into wine. The old water of purification becomes something new, something rich, something that brings joy.

The six stone jars carry a picture of what God has come to do among his people. Jesus is like new wine, and new wine needs new wineskins. Jesus does not simply add a little something to an old life. Jesus calls people to repent, change their minds, turn from the old direction, and set their sights on a new direction.

The master of the banquet tastes the wine and cannot believe that the best has been saved until now. Jesus brings the best wine at the right time, even when most of the room does not know where it came from. Mary knows. The servants know. The disciples come to understand. John says the disciples believed in him.

Jesus’ first miracle stays subtle. The banquet does not stop for an announcement. The crowd does not hear that somebody has turned water into wine. Jesus leaves, and yet the questions are bound to grow: Who did this? What was his name? Why did he do it? Where can he be found?

The mustard seed gives a picture of this kind of kingdom life. Jesus plants something small, often overlooked, and it grows into something that cannot be ignored. Jesus gives his people “a life that they live within a life.” The world may look normal on the outside, but Christ makes hearts new, softens them, transforms minds, and makes people new creations.

Revival begins there. Revival begins in hearts that believe Jesus, obey Jesus, and receive the new life he brings. Jesus’ death, resurrection, and ascension make peace with God possible and bring people into fellowship with his church. Communion becomes a remembrance of that new covenant, an open invitation for followers of Jesus and for those ready to begin following him.
