However, sin reintroduced darkness into the world, affecting all of creation. Jesus came to bring light into this darkness, offering a way to restore what was lost. The light of Jesus is not just a historical event but a present reality that can transform our lives today. Understanding the origin of darkness and light helps us appreciate the significance of Jesus' mission and our need for His light in our lives. [02:33]

Genesis 1:2-3 (ESV): "The earth was without form and void, and darkness was over the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters. And God said, 'Let there be light,' and there was light."

Day 2: Historical Impact of Jesus' Light

After Jesus' arrival, the early church spread the light of the Gospel, transforming societies. However, when Christianity became institutionalized under Constantine, the focus shifted from a relationship with God to a mere institution, leading to the Dark Ages. This period was marked by a lack of progress in various fields, showing that true enlightenment comes only from Jesus. This darkness cannot be overcome by human means; it requires the light of Jesus Christ. The Holy Spirit guides us, and we must listen to His convictions to stay in the light. Following Jesus requires submission and attentiveness, ensuring we don't let anything distract us from Him. This means making intentional choices to prioritize our relationship with Jesus over worldly distractions. [26:14]

Good morning, everyone. It's a joy to see you all here today. My name is Robin Steele, and I'm the senior pastor at Promised Land. As we dive into today's message, I want to start by honoring our graduates, especially my son, who recently graduated from high school. Now, let's turn our attention to the Gospel of John, Chapter 8, Verse 12. But before we get there, I want to take us back to Genesis Chapter 1, Verse 2, to set the stage for today's message.

In Genesis, we see that the world was initially filled with darkness and confusion until God spoke order into existence. This act of creation brought forth the beauty of the world we know today. However, when Adam and Eve chose their own path over God's, darkness re-entered the world through sin. This darkness affected not just humanity but all of creation. But then Jesus came to bring light into the world, a light that changed everything for the better.

For several centuries after Jesus' arrival, the early church spread the light of the Gospel across Europe and Asia. However, when Christianity became the national religion of Rome under Constantine, the focus shifted from a relationship with God to an institution, leading to the Dark Ages. This period was marked by a lack of scientific, artistic, and philosophical advancements. The Enlightenment period that followed sought to bring light back into the world by detaching from the church, but this secular approach failed to eliminate the darkness.

Today, we still see the effects of this darkness in our world. According to the Geneva Declaration on Armed Violence, there are currently 110 armed conflicts worldwide, resulting in over 526,000 deaths this year alone. The CDC reports that 1.3 million Americans will die from heart attacks and cancer this year. Mental health issues affect 25% of Americans, and last year saw a record number of suicides. Addiction, financial struggles, and broken homes are rampant. This darkness cannot be overcome by intellect or technology; it can only be overcome by the light of Jesus Christ.

In John Chapter 1, we read that in Jesus was life, and that life was the light of men. This light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it. Jesus is the true light that gives light to everyone. He came into the world, but the world did not recognize Him. However, to all who received Him, He gave the right to become children of God. This is the good news: Jesus paves the way for anyone who wants to be in a relationship with Him.

Now, let's focus on John 8:12, where Jesus says, "I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness but will have the light of life." This statement is profound. It means that following Jesus is not just about knowing who He is but actively walking with Him. To illustrate this, I invited a volunteer named Jeannie to demonstrate the difference between knowing about Jesus and following Him. Jeannie initially knew about Jesus but got distracted by various things like money, romance, and social media. Each time, she lost sight of Jesus, who kept moving forward. This shows that distractions can lead us away from the light and into darkness.

The Holy Spirit plays a crucial role in guiding us. When we feel convicted about something, it's a warning sign from God. We must listen and obey the Holy Spirit to stay in the light. Whether it's moving past a romance or dealing with financial struggles, the Holy Spirit guides us in making the right decisions.

In conclusion, Jesus is the light of the world, and following Him means walking in that light. It requires submission and attentiveness. Just as you would follow someone in an unknown city, you must pay close attention to Jesus and not let anything distract you. This is not just about avoiding sin but about staying focused on Jesus in every aspect of life.
