Walking by Faith, Not by Sight: Trusting God's Promises

Paul puts eight words on the table in 2 Corinthians 5:7: “For we walk by faith, not by sight.” The text asks a plain question: got faith? Show how you are walking. Faith is not just something said when things feel good. Faith keeps moving when the body hurts, the money looks low, the bills are due, and the situation does not look like it is changing.

The bowed woman in Luke 13 shows what pressing looks like. Her condition kept her looking at feet and dirt, but her faith would not let the ground become her god. For eighteen years, she kept making her way to the synagogue, and Jesus met her there. Christ called her forward, loosed her from her infirmity, and gave her a reason to stand straight and worship God. Her walk brought her to the place where her healing was waiting.

Daniel shows what unwavering faith looks like when haters make rules against prayer. His faith did not change because King Darius signed a decree. Daniel kept praying in his own house, kept thanking God for shelter, clothes, food, and every need, and went into the lion’s den knowing God would meet him right where he was. God shut the lions’ mouths, and what others meant for Daniel’s devouring became blessed sleep and a testimony.

The contrast between faith and sight shows up when people put their hands on things because they cannot see God working fast enough. Sight gets impatient and tries to fix, force, and control what God has already promised to handle. Faith has patience. Faith says, “Lord, whatever you’re doing in this season, don’t do it without me,” and holds on when the visible option looks better than the promise.

Moses shows that God can do the impossible. God did not need Moses to have all the right words; God told him to go and stretch out the rod. The Red Sea opened, dry ground appeared, and God made a way that sight could not explain. God still makes ways when sickness enters a home, when finances get tight, and when trouble feels too deep to come out of.

The race calls for endurance, not quickness. Faith may eat hot dogs without all the extras, wait through pain, and keep trusting when life does not look the way somebody thought it would. God honors the walk that keeps pressing, keeps praying, and keeps believing.
