Romans 8 starts with the great truth that there is now no condemnation for those who belong to Christ Jesus. The life giving Spirit has freed God’s children from the power of sin and death, and that changes everything about how they come near to God. The covenant in Christ brings people close, not standing back in fear, but speaking with God face to face, like Moses spoke with God. The Spirit does not make them pull back in guilt, shame, and doubt. The Spirit brings them boldly into the presence of the Father.
The Spirit who raised Jesus from the dead lives in believers. That is not just a little piece of God, not a slice of the loaf, but the Holy Spirit within them. The Spirit gives life to mortal bodies and enables God’s children to walk differently, speak differently, and see themselves differently. The gates of hell cannot stand against the church because the Spirit of God is in His people, even when little stumbles try to get them going down.
The word “should” can become one of those little stumbles. “I should stop doing this” can open a door to doubt, self judgment, and the lies of the enemy. The enemy turns a simple struggle into a whole pile of accusation: failure as a parent, spouse, witness, or Christian. The Holy Spirit offers a different way. Instead of saying, “I am going to quit,” God’s children can say, “Holy Spirit, walk with me.” The hidden room, the messy room, the shameful thing that feels too awful to bring to God, is exactly the room where the Holy Spirit needs to be invited.
The Holy Spirit does more than help people stop a habit for a while. The Spirit takes away the desire that keeps dragging them back. The pie might still be right there, but its pull is gone when the desire has been left behind. This is not human effort, harsh rules, or trying to win by works. Jesus walks with His people step by step, and His presence leaves no room for evil to rule.
Romans 8 also calls God’s children heirs with Christ, able to cry, “Abba, Father.” The Father does not make His children fearful slaves. The Spirit joins with their spirit and tells them who they are. Christ sends them into the coal mine, the kitchen, the office, the roads, the family, and every hard place to declare their new life. The world may dismiss words, but it cannot dismiss a changed life. Faith in Jesus opens the way to speak with the Father up close, like a child coming right beside Dad.

Key Takeaways
- 1. No condemnation means bold access to God [01:23:35] The freedom from condemnation is not permission to stay stuck. The freedom removes the fear that keeps a person outside God’s presence, wondering whether they are worthy enough to come close. The Spirit brings God’s children in boldly, where guilt no longer has the final word. The Father receives them face to face. [83:35]
- 2. Invite the Holy Spirit into hidden rooms [01:31:26] The place most covered by shame is often the place most needing the presence of God. The Holy Spirit is not frightened by the messy room in the heart, the addiction, or the thing that has been hidden for years. The invitation, “Walk with me, Holy Spirit,” refuses both secrecy and self condemnation. Christ brings healing by entering the place a person least wants to open. [91:26]
- 3. The Spirit takes away the desire [01:32:47] Human effort can sometimes stop an action while leaving the hunger for it untouched. The Holy Spirit works deeper than behaviour, taking the desire and putting that old thing far behind. Freedom becomes real when temptation can sit nearby without ruling the heart. This kind of change is the work of Jesus in a person, not merely a rule they managed to keep. [92:47]
- 4. God’s children cry, “Abba, Father” [01:42:56] Adoption changes the whole way believers approach God. The Spirit does not produce fearful slaves who yell from far away, but children who come right up beside their Father. Faith in Jesus gives access to the Father’s heart and begins a life of close communication. The cry “Abba, Father” grows out of knowing that God has received His children.
