Jude makes “keep yourselves in the love of God” the main command, and he gives three ways believers do that: building up in the most holy faith, praying in the Holy Spirit, and waiting for the mercy of the Lord Jesus Christ. The waiting in verse 21 is not nervous dread over judgment. Christ took condemnation at the cross, and those who are in Christ now have no condemnation and no punishment waiting for them. Jesus, who died for sinners before they could do anything for Him, “always lives to make intercession” for them. He who remembers His people at every turn in prayer will not be harsh with them at the last.
The mercy of Christ transforms the waiting. What a person is waiting for changes the whole experience of waiting, just as waiting in a DMV or dentist office differs from waiting for children to come home at Christmas. The people of God are waiting for the mercy of the Lord, and they are waiting together as the body of Christ. God’s mercy means that He does not give sinners what they deserve, while grace means that He gives what they do not deserve.
The mercy seat in Exodus pictures the place where God met with His people through the blood of sacrifice. Christ fulfills that picture as the great High Priest, and Hebrews invites every believer to come boldly to the throne of grace to receive mercy and find grace for help in time of need. Mercy saves at the beginning, carries believers all through life, and will be received fully “on that day” when Christ returns. The hope of seeing Christ fixes the eyes on Him and purifies the life, bringing holiness toward completion.
Jude then turns waiting for mercy into showing mercy. The church must not spend all its strength fighting falsehood while neglecting its own spiritual condition, but it also must respond wisely to those affected by false teachers. Those who doubt need patient, loving instruction. Those standing on the edge of deception need to be snatched from the fire. Those already defiled by false teaching still need mercy, but mercy must be exercised with fear, hating even the garment stained by the flesh. The love that reaches for the wandering must never make peace with the poison that has harmed them.

Key Takeaways
- 1. Christ’s return brings mercy, not condemnation. Romans 8:1 settles the matter for those in Christ: condemnation is already gone. Christ bore the penalty of sin at the cross, and His intercession continues right now. The coming of Christ is therefore not an appointment with wrath for His people, but the receiving of mercy that leads to eternal life. [34:12]
- 2. The hope of Christ purifies life. The hope of seeing Jesus is not escapism from present responsibilities. John says that everyone who hopes in Christ purifies himself as Christ is pure. Looking toward His return helps believers grow up into Christlikeness and bring holiness toward completion. [55:01]
- 3. Mercy is received at God’s throne. The mercy seat pointed ahead to Christ’s blood and His priestly work. Hebrews now calls believers to come with confidence to the throne of grace, not because sin is small, but because Christ is sufficient. God’s people live every day as needy people who receive mercy rather than earn it. [48:18]
- 4. Mercy responds differently to different dangers. Jude does not give one flat response to everyone caught near falsehood. Doubters need patient teaching, those near the edge need urgent rescue, and those deeply defiled require mercy joined with fear. Love reaches toward people without allowing their error to get hold of the one seeking to help.
