Vigilance and Hope Amidst Revelation's Trials

Summary

In today's exploration of Revelation 6, we delve into the profound imagery and messages conveyed through the opening of the seals by the Lamb, Jesus Christ. This chapter reveals a series of events that unfold as each seal is broken, presenting a vivid picture of the trials and tribulations that precede the ultimate victory of Christ. The imagery of the four horsemen—representing deception, war, famine, and death—serves as a stark reminder of the brokenness of our world and the challenges believers face as they await Christ's return.

The first seal introduces a rider on a white horse, symbolizing deception. This rider, often mistaken for Christ, represents false prophets and teachings that lead many astray. The message here is clear: believers must be vigilant and discerning, deeply rooted in the truth of the Gospel to withstand the allure of false doctrines.

As the subsequent seals are opened, we witness the unfolding of war, economic turmoil, and death. These events, though devastating, are under the sovereign control of God. They serve as reminders of the world's fallen state and the need for a Savior. Despite the chaos, believers are called to wait patiently, trusting in God's ultimate plan and His promise of redemption.

The fifth seal shifts focus to the persecution of the saints, highlighting the suffering endured by those who remain faithful to Christ. Their cries for justice echo the struggles of believers throughout history, yet they are assured of God's presence and the promise of eternal life.

Finally, the sixth seal unveils a cosmic upheaval, a foretaste of the final judgment. It is a sobering reminder of the coming wrath of God and the urgency of repentance. Yet, for those who are in Christ, there is hope and assurance of salvation.

In the midst of these revelations, we are reminded that waiting on Jesus is not passive but an active pursuit of faithfulness. We are encouraged to hold fast to the truth, engage with the community of believers, and trust in the sovereignty of God, knowing that He will ultimately triumph.

Day 1: Vigilance in Discernment
In a world filled with voices claiming truth, the first seal in Revelation 6 warns believers of the danger of deception. The rider on the white horse symbolizes false prophets and teachings that can easily lead many astray. This calls for a heightened sense of vigilance and discernment among believers. It is crucial to be deeply rooted in the truth of the Gospel, distinguishing the true Christ from impostors. This vigilance requires a commitment to studying Scripture and understanding the character of Jesus, ensuring that one's faith is anchored in the authentic teachings of Christ. [10:59]

2 Peter 2:1-2 (ESV): "But false prophets also arose among the people, just as there will be false teachers among you, who will secretly bring in destructive heresies, even denying the Master who bought them, bringing upon themselves swift destruction. And many will follow their sensuality, and because of them the way of truth will be blasphemed."

Reflection: Identify a teaching or belief you have encountered that may not align with the Gospel. How can you seek God's wisdom and Scripture to discern its truthfulness today?

Day 2: Trusting in Divine Sovereignty
The opening of the seals reveals chaos and devastation, yet believers are reminded that God is sovereign over all. The trials and tribulations depicted serve as reminders of the world's brokenness and the need for a Savior. Despite the apparent chaos, believers are called to trust in God's ultimate plan and His promise of redemption. This trust provides hope and assurance amidst uncertainty, knowing that God is in control and will bring about His purposes in His perfect timing. [20:29]

Isaiah 46:9-10 (ESV): "Remember the former things of old; for I am God, and there is no other; I am God, and there is none like me, declaring the end from the beginning and from ancient times things not yet done, saying, 'My counsel shall stand, and I will accomplish all my purpose.'"

Reflection: In what area of your life are you struggling to trust God's sovereignty? How can you actively surrender this area to Him today, trusting in His perfect plan?

Day 3: Endurance in Persecution
The fifth seal highlights the persecution of believers, emphasizing the cost of following Christ. Despite suffering, believers are assured of God's presence and the promise of eternal life. This endurance through persecution is a testament to the value of the Gospel and the hope of future glory. Believers are encouraged to remain steadfast in their faith, knowing that their suffering is not in vain and that God is with them in their trials. [27:20]

1 Peter 4:12-13 (ESV): "Beloved, do not be surprised at the fiery trial when it comes upon you to test you, as though something strange were happening to you. But rejoice insofar as you share Christ's sufferings, that you may also rejoice and be glad when his glory is revealed."

Reflection: Consider a challenge or opposition you are facing because of your faith. How can you find strength and encouragement in God's presence and promises today?

Day 4: Urgency of Repentance
The cosmic upheaval of the sixth seal serves as a sobering reminder of the coming judgment. It underscores the urgency of repentance and the need to be found in Christ. For those who trust in Jesus, there is assurance of salvation and the promise of standing firm in the face of God's wrath. This calls for a heart of repentance and a life aligned with God's will, recognizing the seriousness of sin and the need for a Savior. [23:58]

Acts 3:19-20 (ESV): "Repent therefore, and turn back, that your sins may be blotted out, that times of refreshing may come from the presence of the Lord, and that he may send the Christ appointed for you, Jesus."

Reflection: Is there a specific sin or area of your life where you need to repent and turn back to God? What steps can you take today to align your life with His will?

Day 5: Active Waiting on Jesus
Waiting on Jesus is not passive but involves actively pursuing faithfulness. Believers are encouraged to engage with the community of believers, hold fast to the truth, and trust in God's ultimate victory. This active waiting involves living out one's faith daily, resting in the assurance that Jesus will win and bring about the redemption of all things. It is a call to live with purpose and intentionality, knowing that one's efforts are part of God's greater plan. [15:55]

Hebrews 10:23-25 (ESV): "Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for he who promised is faithful. And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works, not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near."

Reflection: How can you actively engage with your faith community and encourage others in their walk with Christ this week? What specific actions can you take to live out your faith intentionally today?

Quotes

"To catch you up a little bit if you've been not been with us or have missed a little bit of what's going on, we jumped into chapter 4 and we saw the throne of God and we saw God seated on the throne in His majesty and might and His glory and we saw these strange creatures and angels around the throne worshiping Him day and night as the Creator. And then we looked in on the throne and saw in the hands of the one seated on the throne a scroll, this being the future and the future. The plan of God to bring about the salvation of the world. But of course no one was found worthy to open the scroll except there was a lion and a lamb who is Jesus who was found worthy to open the scroll and the angels sing of His holiness and His worthiness and His glory." [00:00:00]

"We read last week about the conquering lion and the conquering lamb and the celebration in heaven as they open the scroll, and we might have expected in the breaking of these seals the beginning of a victory parade or a new hope that is being realized. In each stage of the seals, or the coming of the glorious kingdom of God and the conquering of the whole earth under his glorious reign. But instead, what we see as the seals are cracked open is deception and destruction and discrimination." [00:05:56]

"How are we supposed to rest in a world that is broken? How are we supposed to rest when we face hardship, whether that be in our jobs or in our bodies or with our families? How are we supposed to rest and to wait when the world seems to be turning upside down and not going in the right direction? Well, I want you to know that this passage does not lighten the theme of this passage. It does not lighten the theme of this passage. It does not lighten the theme of this passage. It does not lighten the theme of this that Christians will experience while we wait. It doesn't say that waiting will be easy." [00:06:48]

"Notice the first two verses that we saw as the seal is being opened. What we see is a white horse and a rider on it with a bow and a crown was given to him and he came out conquering to conquer. Now, before we get to that, let's look at the first two verses. Let's look at the first two verses. Before we dive into this text, let me explain why I believe that this person on this white horse is not the same as the reigning Christ that we see in chapter 19." [00:07:48]

"For many will come in my name, saying, I am the Christ, and they will lead many astray. And you will hear of wars and rumors of wars. See that you are not alarmed, for this must take place, but the end is not yet. For a nation will rise against nation and kingdom. against kingdom and there will be famines and earthquakes in various places and these are the beginnings of birth pains that's very similar what jesus says in 24th what john hears in chapter 6 of the book of revelation and if you notice in verse 5 he jesus says there will come false christ false messiahs that will come and so i think what this seal is warning the people of god at the time it was written but also warning on us today is that there will be a time between jesus's ascension and his return where fake christ fake messiahs people who promise eternal life and joy and hope but cannot deliver will be amongst us and what we see brothers and sisters what we see family is that there are many men and women who come and say they speak for god and say they prophesy fates and officiations the freedom and the glory of theہ then when prophecy and religion 걸 건 God and say they are God's people, and yet they are liars and false prophets. Now, we might think, oh, that would be easy to spot. It'd be easy to spot a false prophet, but notice in this image that the writer has a crown. They are victorious in some way." [00:09:29]

"And we see this in those three next horses, those images that come through. We see war. We see poverty with the scales. You may not have known the conversion rate, but it's basically a day's wage for a little bit of food. We see economic problems. We see famine. We see disease and destruction. All these are devastating. Jesus predicted them in Matthew 24, which we read where He says, You will hear of wars and rumors of wars and see that you are not alarmed, for this must take place. The end is not yet." [00:18:05]

"And so we should expect that even though the gospel has come, even though the gospel is being spread all over the earth, that this will not bring about a worldwide peace and a worldwide prosperity. In fact, we should expect to see continual wars, continual famine, continual disease. And isn't that what we've seen? Isn't that what we observed? Even a light reading of history would see that World War I, which was the war to end all wars, only set off World War II, which set off the Cold War and the Korean War and the Vietnam War and the War on Terror and go on and go on and go on. And we keep thinking that technology will bring about worldwide prosperity. And we have seen improvement in that. We have seen improvement through technology, but the world is still broken." [00:18:43]

"And there will still be devastating worldwide problems and plagues all over this world. And so you may look at the brokenness of the world and see famine and see poverty, poverty even around us in this area, and see plagues that capture the world and see wars continually and only seem to increase. And you can think, how can God be good and God be sovereign? How can God be in control of all of this? But I want you to notice something. In verse 4, that rider is permitted. They're allowed to bring war on the earth. In verse 8, that pale horse is given authority. They don't have authority on their own. They're given authority." [00:20:04]

"Even in verse 2, the white horse was given a crown. They are all given authority. And we see even in verse 8 that this only a quarter of the earth is plagued. This is a partial authority. But who is this authority given by? Who gives them this authority? Now, we might first think, well, it's Satan. And Satan has been called the god of this world. And we do recognize, we see in the book of Revelation that Satan does have some power. But I don't think that John is implying that Satan is giving over power to these righteous. Back in chapter 5, we see that there is only one who is worthy to open the seals and to bring out the plan of God. And as he begins to crack them and open them, he is the one that gives authority. It is Jesus." [00:20:21]

"And so Jesus gives limited authority to those who would bring about devastation on the earth. Now, that may trouble you. Jesus is in charge of this. But it shouldn't. Because when you see devastation, when you recognize that these wars, economic crises, these plagues, every single one is under the authority of a good and sovereign and all -powerful God. They cannot run wild. They cannot go one more inch than what Jesus permits them to go. As Jesus tells us in chapter 24 of Matthew's Gospel, these are simply the birth pains. They are the contractions of this world that precede a glorious finish. Yes, they are hard. Yes, they are hard. Yes, they are difficult. Yes, they are devastating." [00:21:08]

"And there will be a devastation that affects everyone. But the fifth seal tells us that there will be a specific suffering that will come against God's people. And so God's people are called to wait in the middle of discrimination and persecution. We see that the fifth seal, there are these saints underneath the altar that have been slain, that have been killed for their witness. They cried out with a voice, how long before you will judge and avenge our blood on the earth? There is coming and there is now a specific discrimination against God's people, against his church, the redeemed people of God. It only takes a couple chapters in the book of Acts before the disciples of Jesus, are threatened, are beaten, and are killed." [00:24:45]

"From a human perspective, it would look like God's people are conquered. It would look like we lose. You may even see that today. It looks like we're losing. But instead of being conquered, they're sacrificed. Jesus leads them into the presence of the King. And we see what they are given. They are given a true white robe, white with purity and holiness. And now they are safe in God's presence. They are secure in God's presence. And they saw that the name of Jesus and the gospel of Jesus was more valuable to them than their own lives." [00:27:44]
