Victory Through Repentance and Commitment to God
Summary
### Summary
Heavenly Father, we thank You for the Scripture recounting the event when You interceded and intervened in the lives of Your people, Israel. When they repented and surrendered to Your will, they gained victory. We pray that those who call themselves Israel today might humble themselves, surrender to Your will, confess faith in Jesus the Messiah, and be saved. Our victory is greater because our intercessor, Jesus Christ, is greater. Remind us of these truths and draw us closer to You. In Jesus' name, amen.
Last Sunday was Mother's Day, and we talked about Hannah, who prayed for a son and dedicated him to God. Her son, Samuel, became a great prophet and leader of Israel. During Samuel's time, the Philistines were a constant threat. They even captured the Ark of the Covenant but returned it after seven months of trouble. Despite having the Ark back, the Israelites continued to struggle against the Philistines. They tried to solve their problems without God and failed. Finally, they turned to the Lord, seeking His help earnestly. When they did, God intervened and delivered them from their enemies.
In 1 Samuel 7:2-13, we read that the Israelites mourned and sought after the Lord. Samuel instructed them to rid themselves of foreign gods and commit to the Lord. They obeyed, and Samuel interceded for them. When the Philistines attacked, the Israelites were afraid and asked Samuel to keep praying for them. Samuel offered a suckling lamb as a burnt offering, and the Lord answered him. God thundered against the Philistines, throwing them into panic, and the Israelites defeated them. Samuel set up a stone called Ebenezer, meaning "stone of help," to commemorate God's assistance.
Samuel discerned that the Israelites were ready to return to the Lord. He told them to rid themselves of idols, commit to the Lord, and serve Him only. Baal and Ashtoreth were fertility deities that the Israelites had adopted. Samuel declared that these idols had no place in the lives of those devoted to God. We, too, must reflect on what idols we have allowed to distract us from God. Samuel's instructions were clear: rid yourselves of idols, commit to the Lord, and serve Him only.
The Israelites followed Samuel's instructions, destroyed their idols, and confessed their sins. Samuel interceded for them, and God responded. We have a better intercessor in Jesus Christ, who sacrificed Himself for us. Samuel's sacrifice of a suckling lamb was a foreshadowing of Jesus, the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world. If God responded to Samuel's sacrifice, how much more will He respond to the sacrifice of His Son?
As Samuel made the sacrifice, the Philistines attacked, but God thundered against them, and they were defeated. This victory was a demonstration of God's power over the so-called god of thunder, Baal. The Israelites gained victory because they followed Samuel's leadership. We have a better victory in Jesus Christ, who gives us victory over death itself. If you are struggling with your own "Philistines," turn to the Lord, commit to Him, and serve Him only. Remember, we have a better intercessor, a better sacrifice, and a better victory in Jesus Christ.
### Key Takeaways
1. Repentance and Surrender Lead to Victory: When the Israelites repented and surrendered to God's will, they gained victory over their enemies. This principle holds true for us today. When we humble ourselves, surrender to God's will, and confess our faith in Jesus, we experience spiritual victory. Our intercessor, Jesus Christ, is greater than any intercessor the Israelites had, and our victory through Him is assured. [24:02]
2. Rid Yourself of Idols: Samuel instructed the Israelites to rid themselves of foreign gods and commit to the Lord. Idols can take many forms in our lives, drawing our focus away from God. Reflect on what might be the idols in your life and take steps to remove them. True commitment to God requires exclusive allegiance and the removal of anything that competes for our devotion. [03:18]
3. The Power of Intercession: Samuel interceded for the Israelites, and God responded to his prayers. We have an even greater intercessor in Jesus Christ, who intercedes for us before the throne of God. Knowing that Jesus is our advocate should give us confidence and peace, knowing that our prayers are heard and that we have divine support in our struggles. [13:44]
4. The Ultimate Sacrifice: Samuel's sacrifice of a suckling lamb was a foreshadowing of the ultimate sacrifice made by Jesus Christ. Jesus, the Lamb of God, was sacrificed for our sins, providing a complete and eternal atonement. This sacrifice is far superior to any Old Testament sacrifice and assures us of God's love and commitment to our salvation. [17:10]
5. Victory Through Christ: The Israelites gained victory over the Philistines through God's intervention. We have a far greater victory in Jesus Christ, who conquered death itself. By turning to the Lord, committing to Him, and serving Him only, we can experience victory over any challenge or enemy we face. Our victory in Christ is eternal and far more glorious than any earthly victory. [20:44]

Devotional
Day 1: Repentance and Surrender Lead to Victory
When the Israelites repented and surrendered to God's will, they gained victory over their enemies. This principle holds true for us today. When we humble ourselves, surrender to God's will, and confess our faith in Jesus, we experience spiritual victory. Our intercessor, Jesus Christ, is greater than any intercessor the Israelites had, and our victory through Him is assured. The Israelites' story reminds us that true victory comes not from our own efforts but from aligning ourselves with God's purposes and seeking His help earnestly. As we turn to God, we can trust that He will intercede on our behalf and lead us to triumph.
[24:02]
1 Samuel 7:3-4 (ESV): "And Samuel said to all the house of Israel, 'If you are returning to the Lord with all your heart, then put away the foreign gods and the Ashtaroth from among you and direct your heart to the Lord and serve him only, and he will deliver you out of the hand of the Philistines.' So the people of Israel put away the Baals and the Ashtaroth, and they served the Lord only."
Reflection: What is one area of your life where you find yourself holding back from surrendering to Jesus? What would surrendering this area to Him actually look like in terms of daily habits?
Day 2: Rid Yourself of Idols
Samuel instructed the Israelites to rid themselves of foreign gods and commit to the Lord. Idols can take many forms in our lives, drawing our focus away from God. Reflect on what might be the idols in your life and take steps to remove them. True commitment to God requires exclusive allegiance and the removal of anything that competes for our devotion. Just as the Israelites had to rid themselves of Baal and Ashtoreth, we must identify and eliminate the modern-day idols that distract us from our relationship with God. This could be anything from material possessions to unhealthy relationships or even personal ambitions.
[03:18]
Colossians 3:5 (ESV): "Put to death therefore what is earthly in you: sexual immorality, impurity, passion, evil desire, and covetousness, which is idolatry."
Reflection: What are some modern-day idols in your life that compete for your devotion to God? How can you take practical steps to remove these distractions and focus more on your relationship with Him?
Day 3: The Power of Intercession
Samuel interceded for the Israelites, and God responded to his prayers. We have an even greater intercessor in Jesus Christ, who intercedes for us before the throne of God. Knowing that Jesus is our advocate should give us confidence and peace, knowing that our prayers are heard and that we have divine support in our struggles. The power of intercession is evident in the way God responded to Samuel's prayers, and it is even more powerful through Jesus, who continually intercedes for us. This assurance should encourage us to bring our concerns and needs to God, trusting in His willingness to act on our behalf.
[13:44]
Hebrews 7:25 (ESV): "Consequently, he is able to save to the uttermost those who draw near to God through him, since he always lives to make intercession for them."
Reflection: Think of a specific struggle or challenge you are facing right now. How can you bring this issue to Jesus in prayer, trusting in His intercession on your behalf?
Day 4: The Ultimate Sacrifice
Samuel's sacrifice of a suckling lamb was a foreshadowing of the ultimate sacrifice made by Jesus Christ. Jesus, the Lamb of God, was sacrificed for our sins, providing a complete and eternal atonement. This sacrifice is far superior to any Old Testament sacrifice and assures us of God's love and commitment to our salvation. The significance of Jesus' sacrifice cannot be overstated; it is the foundation of our faith and the means by which we are reconciled to God. Reflecting on this ultimate sacrifice should deepen our gratitude and commitment to living a life that honors Him.
[17:10]
1 Peter 1:18-19 (ESV): "Knowing that you were ransomed from the futile ways inherited from your forefathers, not with perishable things such as silver or gold, but with the precious blood of Christ, like that of a lamb without blemish or spot."
Reflection: How does understanding the significance of Jesus' sacrifice impact your daily life and relationship with God? What are some ways you can live out your gratitude for His ultimate sacrifice?
Day 5: Victory Through Christ
The Israelites gained victory over the Philistines through God's intervention. We have a far greater victory in Jesus Christ, who conquered death itself. By turning to the Lord, committing to Him, and serving Him only, we can experience victory over any challenge or enemy we face. Our victory in Christ is eternal and far more glorious than any earthly victory. This assurance of victory should embolden us to face life's challenges with faith and confidence, knowing that through Christ, we are more than conquerors.
[20:44]
1 Corinthians 15:57 (ESV): "But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ."
Reflection: What is a current challenge or "Philistine" in your life that you need to overcome? How can you rely on Jesus' victory to face this challenge with faith and confidence?

### Quotes for Outreach
1. "Whatever that Philistine may be, whatever habit, whatever sin, whatever enemy, whatever challenge that we face, doesn't stand a chance our Lord Jesus Christ interceding on our behalf. The Bible says, if God be for us, who can be against us? God is on our side because of Jesus Christ. And we thank God for it." [17:10]
2. "We have a better sacrifice than that suckling lamb that Samuel sacrificed for the Israelites. We have a higher, better sacrifice, a more complete sacrifice, a sacrifice that stands once and for all for our sin and our transgressions. Samuel made a sacrifice. He made a sacrifice for Israel. But the Lord Jesus Christ Himself has made the ultimate sacrifice for us." [18:46]
3. "If you've been pestered, plagued by Philistines of one kind or another in your life lately, then turn your heart toward the Lord. Commit yourself to Him. Serve Him only in your life. And remember that we have a better intercessor than the Israelites had. We have a better sacrifice than the Israelites had. We have a better victory than the Israelites won." [22:42]
4. "You can have victory. You can put your Philistines to flight this very day if you'll trust the Lord and commit yourself to Him." [22:42]
5. "They had tried to solve their own problems without factoring God into the equation, and they came up empty. So do we when we do what they did. But the Israelites finally figured out that they couldn't overcome the Philistines by themselves. They needed help. They needed God. And the Bible says that they got serious about seeking after the Lord. And when they did, the Lord intervened and delivered them out of the hand of their enemies." [02:08]
### Quotes for Members
1. "Samuel interceded for Israel, but he also made a sacrifice. For Israel. Verse 9, it says that when the Philistines found out that Israel was gathered at Mizpah, they saw it as an opportunity. All of the Israelites are gathered together. They're vulnerable here, I think. Let's attack them. Maybe we can gain the advantage. Maybe we can win a victory. And the Israelites were scared. They found out about it somehow. And they told Samuel, don't stop crying out to God for us. We need God. We know it. We're in trouble without Him." [17:10]
2. "Finally, Samuel, the prophet, led Israel in victory over the Philistines. As Samuel made the sacrifice on Israel's behalf, the Philistines began their attack. But the Bible says in verse 10 that that day the Lord thundered with loud thunder against the Philistines and threw them into such a panic that they were routed before the Israelites." [20:44]
3. "We have a better victory in Jesus Christ. Far better. Far more victorious. Far more glorious. Far more enduring. Far more eternal. They may have gained victory over the dominance of the Philistines, but through Jesus Christ, we can experience victory over a much more fearsome foe. The last enemy of all the living, the Bible says, namely, death itself." [20:44]
4. "Samuel promised the Israelites that if they'd follow his instructions, if they'd do these things, that God would deliver them from the hands of the Philistines, he says. Now, I can make that very same promise to you this morning. If you'll do these things, if you want to defeat the Philistines that plague you, you have to get rid of your foreign gods and Ashtoreths, your idols, whatever they may be. You have to commit yourselves to the Lord. And if you do, you will be delivered." [10:46]
5. "Samuel tells them that they must rid themselves of these idols. These Baals and Ashtoreths. Secondly, he says, commit yourselves to the Lord. Their commitment had obviously wavered. And the evidence of that was the fact that they had the Baals and the Ashtoreths, the idols that they bowed before in the land. So he says you've got to turn away from that. You've got to commit yourselves to the Lord and be serious about it. And finally, the third thing, serve the Lord only. You demonstrate that you're serious about it by serving the Lord. And not these idols. God demands and deserves exclusive allegiance in our lives, doesn't He?" [08:56]
6. "We have a better intercessor than Samuel. Far better, in fact. Samuel interceded for Israel, but the Lord Jesus Christ Himself intercedes for us. The beloved Son of God intercedes for us before the throne of grace." [15:23]
