Victory Over the Devil: Embracing Our Protection in Christ
Devotional
Day 1: The Devil's Defeat is Our Victory
The devil, though a fallen angel, is a defeated foe. Jesus' victory on the cross ensures that the devil has no power over Him or those who belong to Him. This truth empowers us to live confidently, knowing that the ultimate victory is already won. The Bible reveals that the devil's defeat is not just a future promise but a present reality. In John 14:30, Jesus declares that the prince of this world has no hold on Him, and in Colossians 2:15, it is described how Jesus disarmed the powers and authorities, triumphing over them by the cross. This assurance should embolden us to resist the devil, knowing that he will flee from us when we submit to God. [01:22]
Hebrews 2:14-15 (ESV): "Since therefore the children share in flesh and blood, he himself likewise partook of the same things, that through death he might destroy the one who has the power of death, that is, the devil, and deliver all those who through fear of death were subject to lifelong slavery."
Reflection: In what areas of your life do you need to embrace the victory of Christ over the devil? How can you live more confidently in this truth today?
Day 2: Stand Firm in Faith
Believers are called to resist the devil, not by casting him out, but by standing firm in faith. The armor of God equips us for this spiritual battle, enabling us to withstand the devil's schemes and remain steadfast in our faith. Ephesians 6 describes the full armor of God, which includes truth, righteousness, the gospel of peace, faith, salvation, and the Word of God. By putting on this armor, we are prepared to face any spiritual challenges that come our way. This spiritual readiness is crucial for maintaining our faith and resisting the devil's attempts to lead us astray. [05:04]
1 Peter 5:8-9 (ESV): "Be sober-minded; be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour. Resist him, firm in your faith, knowing that the same kinds of suffering are being experienced by your brotherhood throughout the world."
Reflection: What piece of the armor of God do you need to focus on today to stand firm against the devil's schemes? How can you practically put it on in your daily life?
Day 3: Filled with the Fullness of Christ
Christians cannot be demon-possessed because they are filled with the fullness of Christ and indwelt by the Holy Spirit. This divine presence leaves no room for demonic influence, ensuring our protection and security in Christ. Colossians 1:13-14 explains that we have been rescued from the dominion of darkness and brought into the kingdom of the Son. The Holy Spirit, who resides in us, is greater than any evil force in the world, as affirmed in 1 John 4:4. This truth provides believers with the assurance that they are safeguarded from demonic possession and can live in the freedom and power of the Holy Spirit. [06:42]
Ephesians 3:16-19 (ESV): "That according to the riches of his glory he may grant you to be strengthened with power through his Spirit in your inner being, so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith—that you, being rooted and grounded in love, may have strength to comprehend with all the saints what is the breadth and length and height and depth, and to know the love of Christ that surpasses knowledge, that you may be filled with all the fullness of God."
Reflection: How does knowing you are filled with the fullness of Christ change the way you view spiritual battles? What steps can you take to deepen your awareness of the Holy Spirit's presence in your life?
Day 4: Trust in God's Safeguarding Presence
Jesus' prayer for our protection from the evil one assures us of God's safeguarding presence. We can trust that God will keep us safe from harm, reinforcing our confidence in His power and faithfulness. In John 17:15, Jesus prays for His followers, asking God to protect them from the evil one. This prayer is a powerful reminder that God is actively involved in our lives, providing us with the protection we need against spiritual threats. By trusting in God's safeguarding presence, we can live with peace and assurance, knowing that He is always with us. [11:08]
Psalm 121:7-8 (ESV): "The Lord will keep you from all evil; he will keep your life. The Lord will keep your going out and your coming in from this time forth and forevermore."
Reflection: In what ways can you actively trust in God's protection over your life today? How can this trust influence your response to fear and anxiety?
Day 5: Embrace Victory and Freedom in Christ
Our struggles are not primarily due to external forces but are opportunities to rely on the victory and protection we have in Christ. Embracing this truth shifts our focus from blaming others to living in the freedom and power of the Holy Spirit. By recognizing that our battles are spiritual in nature, we can approach them with a mindset of victory, knowing that Christ has already won the ultimate battle. This perspective encourages us to take responsibility for our spiritual growth and to rely on the Holy Spirit's guidance and strength in overcoming challenges. [12:57]
2 Corinthians 10:3-5 (ESV): "For though we walk in the flesh, we are not waging war according to the flesh. For the weapons of our warfare are not of the flesh but have divine power to destroy strongholds. We destroy arguments and every lofty opinion raised against the knowledge of God, and take every thought captive to obey Christ."
Reflection: What is one area of your life where you need to shift your focus from external blame to embracing the victory you have in Christ? How can you begin to live in the freedom and power of the Holy Spirit today?
Sermon Summary
Understanding the nature and role of the devil is crucial for our spiritual journey. The Bible reveals that the devil is a created being, a fallen angel, who ultimately fulfills God's purposes. Despite his presence, the devil is a defeated foe. Jesus Christ's life, death, and resurrection have decisively conquered the devil, rendering him powerless over Jesus and, by extension, over those who are in Christ. This victory is vividly illustrated in passages like John 14:30, where Jesus declares that the prince of this world has no hold on Him, and in Colossians 2:15, which describes how Jesus disarmed the powers and authorities, triumphing over them by the cross.
The devil's defeat is not just a future promise but a present reality. Romans 16:20 assures us that God will soon crush Satan under our feet, emphasizing the certainty of his ultimate downfall. This assurance should embolden us to resist the devil, as instructed in James 4:7, knowing that he will flee from us when we submit to God. The armor of God, as described in Ephesians 6, equips us for this spiritual battle, enabling us to stand firm against the devil's schemes.
A common question arises: Can Christians be demon-possessed? The answer is no. Scripture teaches that believers are filled with the fullness of Christ and indwelt by the Holy Spirit, leaving no room for demonic possession. Colossians 1:13-14 explains that we have been rescued from the dominion of darkness and brought into the kingdom of the Son. The Holy Spirit, who resides in us, is greater than any evil force in the world, as affirmed in 1 John 4:4.
While demon possession is a reality, it is not the experience of believers. Jesus' prayer in John 17:15 for our protection from the evil one assures us of God's safeguarding presence. Our response to demonic activity is not to cast out demons but to stand firm, resist, and rely on the power of the Holy Spirit within us. This understanding shifts our focus from blaming external forces for our struggles to embracing the victory and protection we have in Christ.

Sermon Clips
when we take the Bible and begin to understand it we find first of all that the devil was a created being there is great mystery in this admittedly but nevertheless the devil fulfills the very purposes of God, he is a fallen angel, the second thing that the Bible makes perfectly clear is that this devil is defeated, first of all it is clear that the devil had no power over Jesus he had no power over Jesus he has no power over Jesus. [00:00:53]
Jesus says I will not speak with you much longer for the prince of this world is coming, he has no hold on me, it's powerful but he has no influence or power over Jesus if you just turn back I'll give you one or two verses John chapter 12 and verse 31 now is the time for judgment on this world now the prince of this world will be driven out but I when I am lifted up from the earth will draw men to myself. [00:01:32]
Colossians chapter 2. speaking of Jesus and having disarmed the powers and authorities he made a public spectacle of them triumphing over them by the cross, and in Romans chapter 16 we learn that the devil is in deep trouble concerning not only his defeat but also his ultimate Destiny Romans chapter 16 and verse 20 the God of Peace will soon Crush Satan under your feet he is going to be crushed. [00:03:16]
so the reason that I take time to emphasize this is because it is imperative that we understand that the devil is a defeated foe, Checkmate has already occurred on the chessboard of life, at the cross Jesus played the Czech mate, there are moves left on the board but it cannot reverse the fact that Checkmate is certain those of you who play chess understand this. [00:03:53]
we can spend the last 20 minutes or so playing it out but they've already seen the end that is what has happened at the cross he is going to be crushed under our feet he was defeated at Calvary he has no hold on Christ as we will see in a moment he has no hold on the Christian therefore we are told not to be casting him out or casting demons out but we're told that the devil is to be resisted. [00:04:22]
James 4 7 submit yourselves then to God resist the devil and he will flee from you, okay that's a very straightforward and categorical statement right, resist the devil, submission in submission to God and he will flee from you, now on the strength of this biblical instruction, and what the rest of the Bible has to say let me anticipate a question which will inevitably come. [00:05:27]
can Christians be demon possessed I've never ever taught on this without someone comes to me afterwards and said Do You Believe then that it is possible for demons to possess Christians, the answer to that is no I do not, and I don't care whether whether you know what I believe I care whether you understand what the Bible teaches, and you need since you're sensible people to examine the Bible yourself to see if these things are sold. [00:05:56]
let me tell you why I believe that it isn't possible for Christians to be demon-possessed first of all because of what we read in Colossians chapter 2 that Christ's death has given Victory verse 10 of Colossians 2 for in Christ all the fullness of the deity lives in bodily form and you have been given fullness in Christ who is the head over every power and authority Jesus Christ has filled your life believer. [00:06:31]
the believer is described as the one who has been delivered from these things still in Colossians and in verse 1 he says of God the father that he has qualified us to share in the inheritance of the Saints in the Kingdom of Light for he has rescued us from the Dominion of darkness and he has brought us into the kingdom of the son he loves in whom we have Redemption even the Forgiveness of our sins. [00:07:16]
do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you whom you have received from God 1 John 4 4 says great to see that is in you than he that is in the world, so now we know that in realistic terms the Holy Spirit lives within our lives and he's not about to leave to make room for demons. [00:08:03]
when an evil spirit comes out of a man it goes through arid places seeking rest and does not find it, then it says I will return to the house I left, when it arrives it finds the house unoccupied swept clean and put in order, then it goes and takes with it seven other Spirits more wicked than itself and they go in and live there and the final condition of that man is worse than the first. [00:08:39]
so in other words within the state and sphere of natural man it is clearly possible to be possessed of demons, it is also possible for those demons to leave or to be removed, if they leave voluntarily or are removed by any power unless that house namely that life is then to be filled with the fullness of Christ and with the indwelling spirit of God then that life becomes the very potential for a far worse experience of demon possession.
