### Bible Study Discussion Guide

#### Bible Reading
1. Revelation 17:3-6 - "Then the angel carried me away in the Spirit into a wilderness. There I saw a woman sitting on a scarlet beast that was covered with blasphemous names and had seven heads and ten horns. The woman was dressed in purple and scarlet, and was glittering with gold, precious stones and pearls. She held a golden cup in her hand, filled with abominable things and the filth of her adulteries. The name written on her forehead was a mystery: Babylon the great the mother of prostitutes and of the abominations of the earth. I saw that the woman was drunk with the blood of God’s holy people, the blood of those who bore testimony to Jesus."

The world and its desires pass away, but whoever does the will of God lives forever."

Devotional

Day 1: The Unity in Christ
Description: As believers, we are unified under the name of Jesus. Despite our brokenness and sinful nature, God has brought us together through His might and power. This unity is not based on our own merits but on the common name of Jesus, who has redeemed us. We gather to marvel at God's nature and His mercies, which are new every morning. This unity is a testament to God's transformative power in our lives. [00:00]

Ephesians 4:3-6 (ESV): "Eager to maintain the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. There is one body and one Spirit—just as you were called to the one hope that belongs to your call—one Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father of all, who is over all and through all and in all."

Reflection: Think about a time when you felt disconnected from your church community. How can you actively seek to strengthen your unity with fellow believers this week?

Day 2: Praying for the Unreached
Description: The sermon highlighted the importance of praying for unreached people groups, specifically mentioning Libya. With nearly seven million people and 44 different people groups, 31 of which are unreached, the need for prayer is immense. The primary religion in Libya is Islam, and less than one or two percent of the population is evangelical. We are called to intercede for these people, asking God to reveal Himself to them and to raise up workers for the harvest. [01:00]

Matthew 9:37-38 (ESV): "Then he said to his disciples, 'The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few; therefore pray earnestly to the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into his harvest.'"

Reflection: Take a moment to pray specifically for an unreached people group. How can you incorporate regular prayer for the unreached into your daily routine?

Day 3: The Symbolism of Rome
Description: The sermon delved into the symbolism of the seven heads and ten horns in the book of Revelation, explaining that the original readers would have understood these symbols as references to Rome. Rome, known as the seven-hilled city, was the world power of the day. The seven heads symbolize the completeness of Satan's reign on earth prior to the cross, while the ten horns represent the completeness of man's power, corrupted by the beast. This symbolism shows that despite Satan's apparent control, Jesus is victorious. [02:00]

Revelation 17:9-10 (ESV): "This calls for a mind with wisdom: the seven heads are seven mountains on which the woman is seated; they are also seven kings, five of whom have fallen, one is, the other has not yet come, and when he does come he must remain only a little while."

Reflection: Reflect on the ways in which worldly powers can seem overwhelming. How can you remind yourself of Jesus' ultimate victory in your daily life?

Day 4: The Victory of Jesus
Description: The sermon emphasized that Jesus' victory over Satan was prophesied in Genesis 3, where it was foretold that He would crush the head of the serpent. Since the cross, Satan no longer has the same amount of control. Although he still prowls around, the gospel is able to advance, and the powers of the earth will eventually turn on one another. This victory is evident in church history, where Christianity took root and changed the Roman Empire despite Satan's attempts to control it. [03:00]

Genesis 3:15 (ESV): "I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and her offspring; he shall bruise your head, and you shall bruise his heel."

Reflection: Consider a recent challenge or struggle in your life. How can you find hope and strength in the knowledge that Jesus is already victorious?

Day 5: The End of Worldly Powers
Description: The sermon concluded with the assurance that all worldly powers will eventually crumble under the wrath of God. No matter how powerful Satan seems, everything will submit to God's ultimate authority. The passage in Revelation shows that everything worldly submits to the beast, but God's wrath will bring it all to an end. God will create a new creation and set all things right. This reminds us that while Satan uses individuals and organizations to persecute God's people, God's plan will ultimately prevail. [04:00]

Revelation 21:1-4 (ESV): "Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and the sea was no more. And I saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband. And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, 'Behold, the dwelling place of God is with man. He will dwell with them, and they will be his people, and God himself will be with them as their God. He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain anymore, for the former things have passed away.'"

Reflection: How can you live today with the assurance that God's ultimate plan will prevail? What steps can you take to align your life more closely with His eternal purposes?

### Quotes for Outreach

1. "It's clear from our passages that love for the world and love for God, they can't coexist together. And here's why: no matter how much you think you can control it, love for the world, the woman that I believe is depicted here, her sole aim, if you pay attention to her attributes, it is to push out your love for God. That's her sole aim. The more we love the things and the pleasures and the possessions and the pursuits of this world, the less that you're going to love God." [01:07:03](Download raw clip | Download cropped clip | Download vertical captioned clip)

2. "The call to turn away from the world, it's not a call to a dull, dreary life. You're telling me, Pastor Steven, I'm not involved in anything in the world, which I'm not saying at all for the record. But what you're saying is you're calling me to a boring life. That's not what I'm saying at all, guys. The call to turn away from the world and to turn to God, it's a call to satisfaction, to a boring life, a satisfaction that far surpasses anything and everything that this world could offer." [01:13:47](Download raw clip | Download cropped clip | Download vertical captioned clip)

3. "If you love the world, you will perish with this world. If you're defined by this world, you will perish with this world. And so that's the first option. You can love the things of the world. Or second, you can choose to love the God over this world. We can love the God who reigns supreme over this world. We can love the God who alone can satisfy in this world. And when you take this option, our pleasure, it will be unfading." [01:16:58](Download raw clip | Download cropped clip | Download vertical captioned clip)

4. "Do not love the world or the things in the world. Anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world, the desires of the flesh and the desires of the eyes and pride of life, is not from the Father but is from the world. And the world is passing away along with its desires, but whoever does the will of God abides forever." [01:05:26](Download raw clip | Download cropped clip | Download vertical captioned clip)

5. "The pleasures of this world, they are fleeting. They look permanent because they're passing away. They're not going to last. In Babylon, it will be destroyed, and its aim is to pull its citizens away from their creator. That's the aim of Babylon. If we love the things of the world, our pleasures, they're going to be fleeting. Our destiny, it will always be hell. If you love this world, it'll pass away, and it'll take you with it." ### Quotes for Members

1. "You imitate something and someone. Who are you imitating? Even if you have all this good theology and all this good doctrine, if it doesn't change how you talk or how you act, what you care about, if it doesn't change who you are, what you love, because it doesn't matter. It doesn't matter if you can quote Bode Bachman. It doesn't matter if you carry around a John MacArthur study Bible. If you are the world or if you act like the world, you are the world." [01:08:51](Download raw clip | Download cropped clip | Download vertical captioned clip)

2. "As we belong to one of two cities, Babylon or the New Jerusalem, guys, don't miss this. The call to turn away from the world, it's not a call to a dull, dreary life. You're telling me, Pastor Steven, I'm not involved in anything in the world, which I'm not saying at all for the record. But what you're saying is you're calling me to a boring life. That's not what I'm saying at all, guys. [01:13:47](Download raw clip | Download cropped clip | Download vertical captioned clip)

3. "Where you're desiring what the world desires, where you're living like the world lives, some of those things maybe they're already obvious to you, maybe some aren't so obvious. But guys, regardless, as the Lord reveals those things in your heart, I just want to call us as a community of believers this morning to repentance, to weep over sin, to be broken over our sin, to see where we're like the world and to actually like just mourn over it." [01:20:21](Download raw clip | Download cropped clip | Download vertical captioned clip)

4. "The church, his people, they're supposed to look different. I mean, you're scared of your schedules, your spending, your marriages, your parenting, your purity, your possessions, your love, your lives. It should all look different, not for the sake of being different, but because you love God and you don't love the ways and the things of the world. And guys, hopefully you were here when we went through the seven letters to the churches. Jesus said to Laodicea, which is one of the most horrendous churches you saw there, he said, and I'm convinced he says this to us today, those whom I love, I rebuke and discipline. But he goes on, so be earnest and repent." [01:18:40](Download raw clip | Download cropped clip | Download vertical captioned clip)

5. "And so listen, we could spend again a lot of time digging into what these horns and these kings are all about, but I believe that would be missing the point of what the author is trying to show us and what the Holy Spirit wants to communicate. I will say this, the angel makes it clear what the seven heads are. He says there are the seven mountains on which the woman is seated. And it was a clear message again to the original readers, because we can't understand this text unless we understand how they would have interpreted it, that they was John was speaking about Rome here. It had seven mountains or hills surrounding it. And in fact, Rome, just like Chicago, is known as the windy city, right? Rome was known as the seven-hilled city."
