Victory Over Inner War Through Surrender to God

James does not change subjects when chapter three turns into chapter four. The chapter break is almost in the wrong place, because James is still pressing into the same issue: words, voices, and what is really going on underneath the mouth. The bit in the horse’s mouth, the rudder on the ship, and the spark that burns down a forest all show that the tongue has real power. But James keeps digging and asks why anger, jealousy, criticism, and the need to win keep coming out in the first place.

James takes the church from the mouth to the heart. The fight outside of a person often begins with the fight inside of a person. Quarrels do not just come from what somebody else said or did. James says they come from passions that are at war within. The heart wants respect, control, approval, comfort, recognition, or the last word, and when someone gets in the way, the war inside becomes a fight outside.

Desire itself is not always sin, but desire gets dangerous when “I would like this” turns into “I have to have this.” The heart starts to chase what it thinks it cannot live without. The argument may look like it is about dishes, money, dinner, or somebody’s tone, but underneath it may be the simple demand, “I want it my way.” James exposes that kind of desire because it can even get into prayer, turning God into a jack-in-the-box who is expected to give what the heart wants instead of what God wills.

God’s answer to the war is not more willpower. James says, “Submit yourselves therefore to God.” The order matters. Submission comes before resisting the devil. A person cannot win a spiritual battle while still fighting God for control. God gives grace to the humble, not to the proud heart that wants victory without surrender.

James then brings surrender back to words and plans. A surrendered heart should change how a person speaks about others. It should also change how a person speaks about tomorrow. Life is a mist that appears for a little time and then vanishes, so arrogant planning has no place before God. Faith can make plans, but it makes them with a pencil and gives God the eraser. The right prayer becomes open-handed: the desires, relationships, words, and future all belong to the Lord.
