Victory in Christ: Remembering Sacrifice and Freedom

Summary

On this Memorial Day weekend, we pause to remember the great cost of our freedom, both as citizens and as believers. The sacrifices of those who have served and died for our country remind us that freedom is never free. Their courage and selflessness echo the deeper spiritual reality of the ultimate sacrifice—Jesus’ blood shed for us, which gives us true and eternal freedom. Just as Desmond Doss, a man of faith, risked his life to save others on the battlefield, we are called to live courageously, trusting in the victory Christ has already won.

Scripture gives us powerful examples of bravery rooted in faith. Caleb, facing giants in the promised land, and David, confronting Goliath, both understood that the battle belongs to the Lord. Their confidence was not in their own strength, but in God’s promises and presence. In Romans 8, we are reminded that if God is for us, no one can stand against us. God’s generosity is seen in giving us His Son, and with Him, all things—eternal life, hope, peace, and joy. Nothing can separate us from the love of Christ; we are more than conquerors through Him.

This victory is comprehensive. In Christ, we have victory over the world—a system opposed to God, powered by evil. Jesus declared, “I have overcome the world,” and our faith in Him is the means by which we overcome as well. We also have victory over evil and the devil. The spiritual battle is real, but we do not fight in our own strength. God’s Spirit within us is greater than any force against us, and the blood of Jesus silences every accusation of the enemy.

Victory extends to our struggle with the flesh—our old sinful nature. The key is not self-reformation, but walking in the Spirit. Christ is the way to holiness, not the other way around. Finally, we have the promise of future victory over death itself. Because of Christ’s resurrection, death has lost its sting, and we look forward to the day when we will be changed and fully restored.

The promises to the overcomer are rich: access to the tree of life, freedom from the second death, a new name, authority, white garments, and a place with Christ on His throne. Our victory is not achieved by our own efforts, but received by faith as a gift of God’s grace. Let us live as those who have already won, steadfast and abounding in the work of the Lord, sharing the good news of victory in Jesus.

Key Takeaways

- True Freedom Is Costly and Must Be Remembered
Freedom, whether national or spiritual, is never free. The sacrifices of soldiers and, supremely, the sacrifice of Christ, call us to gratitude and remembrance. We are stewards of this freedom, tasked with honoring it and passing it on to future generations, never taking it for granted. [22:31]

- Victory Is Rooted in God’s Promises, Not Our Strength
Caleb and David’s courage came from knowing that God was with them and that the battle belonged to Him. Our confidence should rest not in our abilities, but in the unchanging promises and presence of God. When we face giants or impossible odds, faith in God’s word enables us to move forward with boldness. [30:00]

- We Overcome the World and the Devil by Faith and the Blood of Christ
The world’s system and the devil are formidable, but Christ has already overcome them. Our victory is not in the strength of our faith, but in its object—Jesus, whose blood secures our forgiveness and whose Spirit empowers us. The accusations of the enemy are silenced by the finished work of Christ, and we stand justified and free. [43:31]

- Walking in the Spirit Is the Path to Victory Over the Flesh
Our old nature remains a daily battleground, but the way to victory is not self-improvement or legalism. Holiness is not the way to Christ; Christ is the way to holiness. As we yield to the Spirit and depend on Christ, He transforms us from the inside out, enabling us to overcome sinful desires. [47:57]

- Our Ultimate Victory Is Secure—Death Has Been Defeated
Because of Christ’s resurrection, death has lost its power over us. The promises to the overcomer are certain: eternal life, restoration, and reigning with Christ. Salvation is not something we achieve, but something we receive by grace through faith, and this assurance gives us hope and steadfastness as we await Christ’s return. [50:41]

Devotional

Day 1: Our Victory in Christ—More Than Conquerors

Believers are not just conquerors but “more than conquerors” through Christ who loves us. This means that no matter what opposition, hardship, or spiritual battle we face, God’s love and power guarantee our ultimate victory. Nothing—neither death nor life, angels nor demons, present nor future, nor any power—can separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus. This assurance is not based on our own strength, but on the finished work of Jesus and the generosity of God, who freely gives us all things. Let this truth encourage you today: your victory is secure, and your identity is rooted in Christ’s triumph. [33:24]

Romans 8:31-39 (ESV)
What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us? He who did not spare his own Son but gave him up for us all, how will he not also with him graciously give us all things? Who shall bring any charge against God’s elect? It is God who justifies. Who is to condemn? Christ Jesus is the one who died—more than that, who was raised—who is at the right hand of God, who indeed is interceding for us. Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or danger, or sword? As it is written, “For your sake we are being killed all the day long; we are regarded as sheep to be slaughtered.” No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Reflection: What is one area of your life where you feel defeated or overwhelmed? How can you remind yourself today that you are “more than a conqueror” through Christ in that specific situation?

Day 2: Victory Over the World—Faith in Christ

Jesus has already overcome the world, and through faith in Him, believers share in that victory. The world’s system, with its temptations and opposition to God, cannot ultimately defeat those who are born of God. Our victory is not based on the strength of our faith, but on the object of our faith—Jesus Christ, the Son of God. Even in the midst of tribulation, we can have peace and courage, knowing that Christ’s triumph is our own. [36:40]

1 John 5:4-5 (ESV)
For everyone who has been born of God overcomes the world. And this is the victory that has overcome the world—our faith. Who is it that overcomes the world except the one who believes that Jesus is the Son of God?

Reflection: Where do you feel pressured to conform to the world’s values or discouraged by its challenges? What is one practical way you can place your faith in Jesus today to overcome that pressure?

Day 3: Victory Over Evil and the Devil—Standing in God’s Power

Believers are engaged in a spiritual battle, but the enemy is not people—it is the spiritual forces of evil. God equips us with His armor and strength so that we can stand firm against the devil’s schemes. The power to overcome does not come from ourselves, but from God’s might, and the victory is assured because “greater is He that is in you than he that is in the world.” The blood of Jesus and the word of our testimony are powerful weapons against the accuser, and we are called to stand firm, knowing that Satan is a defeated foe. [41:06]

Ephesians 6:10-13 (ESV)
Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his might. Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil. For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places. Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand firm.

Reflection: Is there a recurring temptation or spiritual attack you are facing? What piece of God’s armor do you need to “put on” today to stand firm in His strength?

Day 4: Victory Over the Flesh—Walking in the Spirit

The struggle with our sinful nature is real, but God provides victory as we walk in the Spirit. Trying to reform ourselves by our own effort will not bring holiness; instead, Christ is the way to holiness, and as we yield to the Holy Spirit, we are empowered to overcome the desires of the flesh. The Spirit and the flesh are in conflict, but if we are led by the Spirit, we will not fulfill the lusts of the flesh. This is a daily choice to depend on God’s power and not our own. [47:04]

Galatians 5:16-18 (ESV)
But I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh. For the desires of the flesh are against the Spirit, and the desires of the Spirit are against the flesh, for these are opposed to each other, to keep you from doing the things you want to do. But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law.

Reflection: What is one area where your fleshly desires are strongest? How can you intentionally walk in the Spirit today to experience victory in that area?

Day 5: Victory Over Death—The Promise of Resurrection

Death is not the end for those who are in Christ; it has been swallowed up in victory through Jesus’ resurrection. The promise of eternal life and resurrection means that the sting of death and the power of the grave are broken. This future hope gives us courage to live steadfastly and abound in the work of the Lord, knowing that our labor is not in vain. One day, we will be changed, and all that is corruptible will be made incorruptible, as we are brought into God’s eternal presence. [50:41]

1 Corinthians 15:51-57 (ESV)
Behold! I tell you a mystery. We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed, in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, and the dead will be raised imperishable, and we shall be changed. For this perishable body must put on the imperishable, and this mortal body must put on immortality. When the perishable puts on the imperishable, and the mortal puts on immortality, then shall come to pass the saying that is written: “Death is swallowed up in victory.” “O death, where is your victory? O death, where is your sting?” The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law. But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.

Reflection: How does the promise of resurrection and victory over death change the way you face fears or uncertainties today? What is one way you can live with hope and purpose because of this promise?

For I am persuaded that neither death nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord. [00:33:56]
That phrase, more than conquerors, huper nikeo in Greek, hyper nike. That's where we get our words, hyper. When something's hyper, it's elevated, right? It's more than it can be. Nike, victory. We are more than conquerors. To gain a surpassing victory. To vanquish beyond. To gain a decisive victory. That's what Paul is saying. Through him who loved us. We are already conquerors, victors, and more than victors. [00:34:14]
The Bible says that we have victory over the world. When we say the world, we don't mean this planet Earth. When the Bible talks about the world, it means this world system. The system of its wickedness. of its evil desires. Powered by the evil one. Satan. Dominated by Satan. We have victory over the world. [00:35:19]
Here's what Jesus said during his last supper with his disciples. John 16, 33. These things I have spoken unto you that in me ye might have peace. In the world ye shall have tribulation. But be of good cheer, I have overcome the world. [00:35:53]
If you have been born of God, if you have been born again, you can overcome the world. And this is the victory that overcometh the world even our faith. It's not the strength of our faith. It's the object of our faith. Your faith is only as strong and powerful as its object. And who is, who should be the object of our faith? God the Father, God the Son, God the Holy Spirit. [00:37:20]
Who is he that overcometh the world? But he that believeth that Jesus is the Son of God. Do you believe it? If you believe it, you overcome the world. This world has nothing to offer to us. It's passing away. [00:38:00]
We are in a war. I don't know if you realize it or not. As a believer, we are at war. But let's see who we are at war with. Ephesians 6, starting in verse 10. Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord and in the power of His might. not our own might. We don't have this might. It's His power. It's His strength. It's His might. [00:38:50]
Paul is saying our enemy is not flesh and blood. People are not the enemy. Now, people could act as agents of Satan. But who's behind it all? We are against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places. Wherefore, take unto you the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand. [00:39:40]
If the word of God abides in you, you have the power through his word, through his name. 1 John 4 4 He are of God little children and have overcome them because greater is he that is in you than he that is in the world. Who is in you? The Holy Spirit. And who is it that's in the world? Satan. God is infinitely greater than Satan. Satan is not God's equal. He is a defeated foe. [00:41:27]
Do you feel defeated? feel like the devil has an upper hand in your life? Is he reminding you of things in your life and accusing you? Saying things like you hypocrite. You call yourself a Christian? Look what you've done. He accuses believers before God day and night. do you know there's someone else in that courtroom? There's someone else who says stop. Stop lying. I have applied my blood to this believer. believer. He is forgiven. He's justified. He's free. [00:42:57]
And they overcame him by the blood of the lamb. They overcame whom? The accuser. By the blood of the lamb and by the word of their testimony. And they loved not their lives unto the death. See, some believers were martyred. there are believers being martyred even today for their faith because of their testimony. We should be so grateful that we have the freedom to proclaim our faith here. Again, don't take it for granted. There may come a day where it will be illegal to do what we're doing right now. They overcame him by the blood of the lamb. There is power in that blood. This is written from the perspective of the last days. Jesus' blood was spilled 2 ,000 years ago and yet there is still power in that blood. And that blood will never lose its power. [00:44:06]
If you were to stand in a courtroom, would there be enough evidence to convict you of being a Christian? our words and our works should show that we are his followers. We have victory over the world. We have victory over evil and the devil. And we have victory over the flesh. [00:45:24]
This I say then, walk in the spirit, and ye shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh. For the flesh lusteth against the spirit, and the spirit against the flesh. And these are contrary the one to the other, so that ye cannot do the things that ye would. But if ye be led of the spirit, ye are not under the law. [00:46:46]
Holiness is not the way to Christ. Christ is the way to holiness. Holiness is not the way to Christ. Christ is the way to holiness. He will make you holy. You know, He made us fishers of men. We catch them, He cleans them. [00:47:53]

For this corruptible must put on incorruption, and this mortal must put on immortality. So when this corruptible shall have put on incorruption, and this mortal shall have put on immortality, then shall be brought to pass the saying that is written, Death is swallowed up in victory. O death, where is thy sting? O grave, where is thy victory? The sting of death is sin, and the strength of sin is the law. But thanks be to God. Which giveth us victory, the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. [00:50:04]
He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches. To him that overcometh will I give to eat of the tree of life which is in the midst of the paradise of God. He that overcometh, the same shall be clothed with white raiment. And I will not blot out his name out of the book of life, but I will confess his name before my Father and before his angels. Wow. If we confess his name, he will confess our name. [00:53:43]
These shall make war with the Lamb and the Lamb shall overcome them. For he is Lord of lords and King of kings and they that are with him are called and chosen and faithful.
