Joshua 9 shows that what God had done through Israel had spread all through Canaan. Jericho and Ai had made the inhabitants afraid, because they had heard the fame of the Lord, not merely the strength of Joshua or Israel. The nations gathered together to fight, proving that real victories do not make the enemy quit. The enemy intensifies the opposition when God is working in and through His people.
The Gibeonites chose a different tactic. Gibeon was a great and royal city, yet its people came with old sacks, worn bottles, dry moldy bread, old clothes, and worn shoes. Their whole plan was built on a lie. They claimed to come from a far country, hoping Israel would make a league with them and let them live. Gibeon had heard the truth about God, His commands, and His power, but fear did not bring them to genuine surrender. Fear led them to deception.
Joshua and the princes made the key mistake when they took of the Gibeonites' victuals and “asked not counsel at the mouth of the Lord.” Israel believed what it saw, heard, and experienced, but none of those things told the truth. Three days later, Israel learned that Gibeon was nearby. What seemed like a small, easy decision became a long-reaching problem because Israel did not stop and seek God's counsel.
God still held Israel accountable for the promise made in His name. Although Gibeon had lied, Israel had sworn an oath, and truth still mattered. Joshua let the Gibeonites live, but made them hewers of wood and drawers of water for the congregation and the house of God. Their deception brought them into bondage. Lies promise escape, control, or advantage, but lies always carry consequences. Truth makes free.
The warning reaches into every kind of decision. God’s understanding surpasses what people see, hear, or even experience. Deception has become more sophisticated, and the enemy still uses lies to get people operating outside the truth. God calls His people to seek counsel from Him in matters that seem huge and in matters that seem small. Accomplishments can attract attention to God and bring Him glory, but those same victories also put God’s people on the enemy’s radar. Truth, vigilance, prayer, and obedience must remain the path forward.

Key Takeaways
- 1. Victories intensify the enemy’s opposition God’s victories through Israel caused the nations of Canaan to gather for war. Spiritual progress does not mean resistance disappears, because the enemy wants to stop the fame of God from spreading. Faithfulness requires watchfulness when God is clearly working. [41:08]
- 2. Deception thrives without God’s counsel Israel saw moldy bread, old clothes, and worn shoes, then treated those things as proof. The visible evidence was carefully designed to mislead them. Decisions become dangerous when sight, experience, or human reasoning replaces counsel from the Lord. [22:48]
- 3. Small decisions carry lasting consequences The league with Gibeon probably seemed like a minor matter with no real impact. That one decision followed Israel into later generations and created consequences far beyond the moment. God’s people need His direction even when a choice appears simple. [45:46]
- 4. Truth remains binding amid another’s lies Gibeon lied, but Israel had still made a promise in the name of the Lord. God did not permit Israel to answer deception with unfaithfulness. Truthful people must keep doing right even when others have clearly done wrong. [50:49]
- 5. Lies bring bondage, truth brings freedom Gibeon escaped immediate death through deception, yet became servants because of that same deception. Sin often looks like a way out, while quietly building chains around the life. God’s truth may confront deeply, but it is the path that makes people free.
