VBS Recap: Discovering God's Nature — Wow God

Vacation Bible School at CLC took the children into Rainforest Falls, exploring the nature of God through songs, Bible stories, snacks, games, crafts, and a whole lot of “wow God.” Rainforest Falls gave the children a way to see the sights and sounds of God’s world and then hear what holy scripture reveals about the God who made it. Each day carried a simple take home point, a Bible memory verse, and an animal friend to help the truth stick in the hearts of the children.

God as Creator stood first. The creation catapult gave the children a good laugh, but the point was plain: human beings have to take existing things to make new things, but God does not. God created everything that exists out of nothing by his almighty word. Tango the Ketzalber helped the children remember, “God is our creator,” and the answer kept getting louder: “wow God.”

God’s knowledge came next. King David’s Psalms taught that human knowledge is limited, but God knows everything. Seymour the glass frog, with a body that lets a person see inside, gave a picture of the God who sees the heart. God knows the good, the bad, the fears, the feelings, the dreams, and the loneliness that no one else can fully understand.

God as safe place came through young David hiding from Saul. David went from place to place in fear for his life, and God protected him. God is not merely a “safe space” where no feelings get hurt. God is the place of refuge for his chosen children in Christ Jesus, the one who loves in spite of frailties and guards against harm and danger.

God’s love stood at the center in Jesus’ death and resurrection. Human love can be fickle and fading, loving pizza, teams, and people until disappointment gets in the way. God’s love does not fade because God is love. Tia the Anteater pointed to that carrying, enduring love, and Christ Jesus put that love into action with forgiveness.

God’s forever life closed the week with John’s vision of heaven. Vacation Bible School ended after five days, and life in this world also comes to an end. Life with God does not end because God is forever. The children’s God sightings, the butterflies on the wall, the volunteers, the prayers, the support, and the whole week all served one truth: God created his children in Christ, knows them completely, shelters them, loves them, forgives them, and gives them everlasting life.
