John 4:35 puts the matter plain: “Say not ye, there are yet four months, and then cometh harvest.” Jesus does not say wait. Jesus says look. The fields are not almost ready, they are “white already to harvest,” and that makes evangelism urgent, not optional.

The command to evangelize belongs to every believer in Christ Jesus. The Great Commission does not sit only on missionaries, preachers, or the folks who seem to know the most Bible. Mark 16:15 says, “Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature,” and that means every Christian has a part in getting the truth of Jesus Christ to lost people.

The urgency comes from the fact that souls are perishing. People do not wake up expecting the day to be their last. A moped accident, a gunshot, sickness, violence, and sudden death all testify that every soul has an expiration date. Proverbs 27:1 says not to boast about tomorrow, because neither the lost person nor the Christian trying to reach that person is promised another day.

The harvest is plentiful because people are searching, hungry, and broken. A door may open to someone who has been looking for truth. A child on a bus route, a person at work, a clerk at a store, or a neighbor in an apartment building may be nearer to the edge than anybody knows. Evangelism must move with some urgency because the church has “the real deal,” not a false gospel and not empty religion.

The devil works hard to distract the Christian from eternal things. If Satan cannot make a Christian wicked, he can make a Christian busy. Flat tires, crowded schedules, emergencies, and temporal cares can steal the time that should be redeemed. Romans 13:11 says it is high time to awake out of sleep, because salvation is nearer now than when the believer first believed.

God blesses the efforts of soul winners. Proverbs 11:30 says, “He that winneth souls is wise,” and Psalm 126:6 promises rejoicing to those who go forth weeping. The fruit may not show up right away, but Vacation Bible School, bus ministry, door knocking, and simple gospel witness can be used mightily by God over time.

Evangelism is empowered by the Holy Spirit. Human strength cannot pierce hearts, but the Spirit can. Acts 1:8 says power comes after the Holy Ghost comes upon the believer, and that same Spirit who convicted thousands at Pentecost still uses clean, yielded vessels today.
