Acts opens with Jesus after Calvary, after hanging, bleeding, dying, and getting up early the third day morning with all power in his hand. Jesus comes to his disciples, speaks to them on the slopes of Mount Olivet, and tells them that power will come after the Holy Ghost comes upon them. The letter may kill, and folk may have all the papers they want, but the Spirit makes it alive. Jesus tells them they shall be witnesses in Jerusalem, Judea, Samaria, and unto the uttermost parts of the world.
The disciples watch Jesus step aboard a cloud, and the angel reminds them that the same Jesus is coming back again. The disciples return to Jerusalem and go into the upper room, 120 of them, waiting on what Jesus promised. The upper room experience moves them from fear to fire, from being afraid to being bold, from sitting still to telling the story.
The text shows first that the 120 were unified in their effort. They continued with one accord in prayer and supplication. Unity does not mean everybody agrees on everything, because a person does not even agree with himself all the time. Unity means the church wants the cause of Christ to go according to God’s will, without chewing folk out, calling names, or pulling the ministry down. When there is no enemy within, the enemy outside cannot hurt. One love, one heart, one accord.
Acts also shows that they were filled with the same Spirit. Verse four does not say they were filled with Hennessy, rum and Coke, gin, or vodka. The text says they were filled with the Holy Ghost, the other Comforter Jesus promised. Jesus is Emmanuel, God with his people, but the Holy Spirit is God in his people. The Spirit empowers, purifies, and ignites. The Spirit sets a burning in the heart until a believer cannot help doing what God has called him to do.
Acts then shows that they gave their testimonies. The Spirit gave them utterance, and people from all over heard the wonderful works of God in their own language. God broke down cultural barriers with the same Jesus for everybody. An upper room experience cannot stay hidden. The soul becomes a witness, telling how the Lord picked up, turned around, loosed shackles, made a way, and put a new song in the mouth. The church that embraces that experience promotes Jesus, wants somebody else to have Jesus, and moves from fear to fire.
Key Takeaways
- 1. Unity closes the enemy’s door The church in one accord becomes harder for Satan to divide into pieces. Unity does not require identical opinions, but it does require a shared surrender to the cause of Christ. A divided church gives the enemy room to get “all in the Kool-Aid,” but a unified church becomes dangerous in prayer, service, and witness. [07:05]
- 2. The Spirit turns fear to fire The disciples were fearful before the upper room, but the Holy Ghost made them bold. The Spirit does not merely comfort passive people, he empowers, purifies, and ignites them for the work of God. A real encounter with God puts a burning in the heart that cannot be explained by personality, education, or human strength. [18:20]
- 3. Testimony tells what God did The upper room experience made silent people speak. Testimony is not self-promotion, because the witness says, “I didn’t do it. He did it for me.” A soul that has been lifted, turned around, and given a new song cannot keep that story locked inside. [23:15]
- 4. The same Jesus crosses every barrier Pentecost made the nations hear one gospel in many languages. The miracle was not confusion, but clarity, because God wanted every people to hear the same Jesus. Cultural difference did not weaken the mission, because the Spirit carried the witness across every line that people thought could not be crossed. [31:32]
- 5. Start small and grow bold Fearful disciples often need a place of prayer before a public witness. A smaller group can nurture courage, focus the heart on God, and help a believer grow into obedience. God can prop up every leaning side, but the first step may simply be joining others who are seeking him seriously. [37:09]
