Upon These Truths we Stand Msg.12 - The Family

God’s design for the family begins in Genesis, not in culture. God created male and female in His image, brought them together, blessed them, and commanded them to be fruitful and multiply. The family belongs to the Creator, so culture does not get to redefine what God has already designed. The home must show the next generation what God intended, not merely talk about it at church.

God stands at the center of a healthy family. Psalm 127 warns that except the Lord build the house, they labor in vain that build it. The Trinity shows how distinct persons can live in fellowship, unity, and purpose, and the family ought to reflect that same kind of unity. A home cannot stand when every person is pursuing separate goals, fighting for control, and looking everywhere but God’s Word for answers.

Genesis 2 shows that Adam had a relationship with God, a home, work, provision, and divine direction before God brought Eve to him. God declared that it was not good for man to be alone, and He made Eve as a help meet, a helper corresponding to Adam. The word helper does not mean lesser, because God Himself is called help throughout the Old Testament. Marriage joins a man and woman as one flesh, with God Himself in the middle of that union.

Ephesians 5 gives distinct roles without making one person more valuable than another. The husband’s headship is not a crown to sit on, but a cross to bear. Christlike leadership means sacrificial, serving, sanctifying love, not demanding that a wife serve him. The wife’s submission is not blind obedience to sin, but a willing support of godly leadership as unto the Lord. Children are not a bother but a blessing, and parents bear the responsibility to teach them God’s Word through daily life, words, and example.

The arrow picture shows why parental guidance can feel hard in the moment. Parents pull back on an arrow because they intend to launch it, and where children land has much to do with how they were aimed. Integrity runs downhill, while insults, absent fathers, contentious wives, and unchecked rebellion leave bricks of damage for children to inherit.

Jesus Christ remains the hope of every faulty family. Christ saves sinful husbands, wives, parents, and children, then changes them from the inside out through His Spirit and Word. God’s grace gives strength for obedience today, even where yesterday holds regrets, loss, divorce, or wasted years.
