Apostles can ER I this new Paul is saying that this this first Paul ER he's correcting the Apostle and Paul says that came can't be Apostles don't ER and so you know this Apostle is a false Apostle so he's holding out the possibility that he himself could go haywire and say something contrary to what he said before and thus prove that he has left the faith because Apostles don't ER this would be a hypothetical false Apostle and angels in other words he's he's saying that his authority as he preached the gospel and as you received it was an authority higher than Angels higher than anyone and higher than himself if he were depart depart from the gospel. [00:04:14]

Because I would have you know brothers that the gospel that was preached by me so there it is that's the original pure Apostolic gospel preached by me is not man's gospel for I did not receive it from from any man nor was I taught it but I received it through a revelation of Jesus Christ and the rest of this chapter is going to be a defense of that statement so the Jesus Christ is higher than what are the three options angels we or anyone so Christ cannot be contradicted by any human even a rogue apostle that calls the first Apostle a liar or Angels. [00:05:37]

The Reformation was the great movement in the Catholic church at the beginning of the 16th century in which Martin Luther John Calvin hulick swingley and others recognized the corruption in the church Church the misplacement of biblical Authority and the loss of the doctrine of justification by faith and the whole world was turned upside down by the reformation and this book Galatians was right at the center of it why was that the case here's the reason the formal principle of the Reformation was this now that means means the principle that formed the structure of the Reformation or provided the framework for the Reformation or gave the foundation to the Reformation namely the supreme authority of scripture over all human authority including the pope and all the historic councils scripture was Supreme Over All people. [00:07:05]

Second the material principle of the Reformation that means what was the matter the substance the teaching the doctrine at the center that was the truth that sinful human beings stand Justified before God not on the basis of any righteousness of their own doing but only on the basis of Christ crucified risen righteous so those are the two Central principles of the Reformation Galatians chapters one and two deal mainly with the formal principle Paul's Apostolic Authority and thus the supreme authority of the scripture over everything remember if we preach to you if angels preach to you if anybody including popes and counsel if anybody preaches to you another gospel let them be a cursed. [00:08:38]

The next two chapters deal mainly with the material principle of justification by faith and then chapters 5 and six deal with how that looks in real life so that's where we're going in this letter and that's why the letter was so powerful in the Reformation the Reformation didn't come out of nowhere the Protestant Church didn't emerge merely because there was moral corruption in the papal office and the Bishops it emerged because the authority upon which the Catholic church was building was found to be distorting the authority of scripture by putting hope and counsel alongside it with equal Authority and were neglectful of the doctrine of justification by contaminating it with sanctification. [00:09:50]

One illustration of how that looked in the mouth of Martin Luther here's his use of Galatians 1:8 I considered it proper that the words of scripture in which the Saints are described as being deficient in merits the Bible teaches that all human beings including all most accomplished human beings as the Roman Catholic Church might interpret this word Saints all believers are deficient in merits are to be preferred these scriptures are to be preferred to human words in which the Saints are said to have more merits than they need which is what was what they were teaching you can you can have merits that you can sell or share with other people for the pope is not above but under the word of God according to gal 18. [00:10:40]

Wow so there is the text on which he built his whole Rebellion against papal Authority as equal to or above scripture and he quotes it even if we or an angel from heaven should preach to you a gospel contrary to that which you received let him be a cursed and so in the mind of Martin Luther in the mind of John Calvin and all the reformers in my mind this text is saying Apostolic Authority is rooted in the authority of Christ and therefore it is above all human Authority therefore anybody who comes bringing a change to the gospel of Christ let him be a.
