Unveiling the Mystery of Unbelief and Salvation

Summary

In this sermon, I explore the profound mystery of unbelief, particularly why the gospel remains hidden to some. Drawing from 2 Corinthians 4:3-4, I emphasize that the gospel is veiled to those who are perishing, blinded by the god of this world. This blindness is not due to a lack of intelligence or knowledge, as some might claim, but rather a spiritual veil that obscures the truth of the gospel. The Apostle Paul himself, once a vehement opponent of Christianity, experienced a transformation when this veil was lifted, revealing the glory of Christ.

I address common misconceptions about unbelief, such as the belief that modern knowledge or scientific advancements render the gospel obsolete. However, I argue that no new knowledge has emerged that changes the fundamental truths of the gospel. The issue is not intellectual but spiritual; it is a matter of revelation, not discovery. The gospel is a divine revelation that transcends human understanding and is not subject to the limitations of time or human progress.

The tragedy of unbelief is profound. It is not merely a rejection of doctrine but a blindness to the glory and majesty of God's plan of salvation. Those who are blind to the gospel are unaware of their lost state, separated from the life and love of God. This blindness leads to a life devoid of the true knowledge of God and the eternal consequences of being outside His fold.

Yet, there is hope. The same power that raised Christ from the dead can remove the veil from our hearts, allowing us to see the light of the gospel. It is a call to turn to the Lord, for when we do, the veil is removed, and we can behold the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ. This transformation is not of human doing but the work of God, who shines His light into our hearts.

Devotional

Day 1: Spiritual Blindness and the Veil of Unbelief
Unbelief is not a matter of intelligence or knowledge but a spiritual blindness caused by the god of this world. This veil prevents people from seeing the truth of the gospel, which is a divine revelation beyond human discovery. The Apostle Paul, once a fierce opponent of Christianity, experienced a profound transformation when this veil was lifted, revealing the glory of Christ. This blindness is not due to a lack of intelligence or knowledge, as some might claim, but rather a spiritual veil that obscures the truth of the gospel. The tragedy of unbelief is profound, as it leads to a life devoid of the true knowledge of God and eternal separation from Him. [08:49]

2 Corinthians 4:3-4 (ESV): "And even if our gospel is veiled, it is veiled to those who are perishing. In their case, the god of this world has blinded the minds of the unbelievers, to keep them from seeing the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God."

Reflection: Consider a time when you felt spiritually blind or distant from God. What steps can you take today to seek His light and truth in your life?

Day 2: The Timelessness of the Gospel
The gospel remains unchanged despite advancements in human knowledge. It is a timeless revelation that addresses the deepest needs of humanity, offering a solution to sin and separation from God. Modern knowledge or scientific advancements do not render the gospel obsolete, as no new knowledge has emerged that changes its fundamental truths. The issue is not intellectual but spiritual; it is a matter of revelation, not discovery. The gospel transcends human understanding and is not subject to the limitations of time or human progress. [23:55]

Hebrews 13:8 (ESV): "Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever."

Reflection: In what ways have you allowed modern knowledge or societal changes to influence your understanding of the gospel? How can you reaffirm the timeless truths of the gospel in your daily life?

Day 3: The Tragedy of Unbelief
The tragedy of unbelief lies in the ignorance of one's lost state and the rejection of the glorious plan of salvation. This blindness leads to a life devoid of the true knowledge of God and eternal separation from Him. Those who are blind to the gospel are unaware of their lost state, separated from the life and love of God. It is not merely a rejection of doctrine but a blindness to the glory and majesty of God's plan of salvation. [49:56]

Ephesians 4:18 (ESV): "They are darkened in their understanding, alienated from the life of God because of the ignorance that is in them, due to their hardness of heart."

Reflection: Reflect on someone you know who may be struggling with unbelief. How can you be a light in their life, gently guiding them towards the truth of the gospel?

Day 4: Transformation Through Divine Revelation
The transformation from unbelief to faith is a divine act where God removes the veil, allowing us to see the glory of Christ. This change is not due to human effort but the power of God working in us. The same power that raised Christ from the dead can remove the veil from our hearts, allowing us to see the light of the gospel. It is a call to turn to the Lord, for when we do, the veil is removed, and we can behold the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ. [43:39]

Colossians 1:13-14 (ESV): "He has delivered us from the domain of darkness and transferred us to the kingdom of his beloved Son, in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins."

Reflection: What areas of your life do you need to surrender to God for transformation? How can you invite His power to work in you today?

Day 5: Turning to the Lord for Sight
Turning to the Lord is the key to removing the veil of unbelief. When we acknowledge our blindness and seek Him, He promises to reveal His glory and bring us into the light of His truth. This transformation is not of human doing but the work of God, who shines His light into our hearts. The call is to turn to the Lord, for when we do, the veil is removed, and we can behold the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ. [01:02:59]

Psalm 119:18 (ESV): "Open my eyes, that I may behold wondrous things out of your law."

Reflection: What is one specific area of your life where you feel spiritually blind? How can you actively seek God's guidance and revelation in this area today?

Quotes

If our gospel be hid, it is hid to them that are lost, in whom the God of this world hath blinded the minds of them that believe not, lest the light of the Glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine unto them. [00:26:08]

The gospel is not something that encourages us in our Quest or in our search for truth. It is what is called Revelation. It's not men's training to try to discover. That's what science does rightly. That's what we must do in every realm. We seek and we try to discover more and more truth. [00:24:47]

There is no new knowledge that has come to light during the last 100 years that has made the slightest difference to these matters. Not the slightest. I'm not here to denounce the advance of knowledge. I thank God for it. Thank God for scientific discoveries and inventions. [00:21:00]

The tragedy of unbelief is there anything more tragic than the rejection of this gospel? What does it mean? Why do you call it a tragedy? There is nothing which is more tragic to me than that a man should be unaware of the state and the condition in which he is. [00:45:04]

The veil has been taken away, or if you prefer it, the Jus is gone. The gospel is the same as it was before. His abilities are exactly the same as they were before, and yet his attitude is different. Why? The veil is gone. He's seeing it. He couldn't see it before. [00:43:14]

The gospel alone explains the state of your world tonight. It's the fall of men. It's this blinding against the knowledge of God that accounts for everything. Wasn't that the very thing that the devil did to Eve? Adam and Eve had believed in God. They were having communion with him. [00:36:07]

The Apostle Paul tells these Corinthians in the first epistle, first chapter, that is this preaching of the Cross was to the Jews a stumbling block, to the Greek philosophers it was nothing but out of foolishness. Folly. This is what they said. They said this is simply monstrous. [00:12:36]

The world by seeking knew not God. The philosophers couldn't find him, and they still can't. You see, we're dealing with a different type of knowledge. We are no longer in the realm of things that can be seen and touched and felt and handled and weighed and measure. It's the spiritual realm. [00:24:47]

The same power that raised Christ from the dead can remove the veil from our hearts, allowing us to see the light of the gospel. It is a call to turn to the Lord, for when we do, the veil is removed, and we can behold the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ. [01:02:59]

The veil that colors everything and poisons everything and prevents his seeing the truth as it is in Christ Jesus. Oh, I need keep you. I can give you one final proof of all I'm trying to say, and the final proof of course is the case of any man who's ever been converted. [00:41:18]

The gospel of Jesus Christ even tells us why people don't believe it. It is it alone that can give us light on that. We've been seeing Sunday night after Sunday night how the gospel alone can give us light on certain vital topics and subjects. But you know, it's the only thing that can give us light even on unbelief. [00:07:12]

The transformation from unbelief to faith is a divine act where God removes the veil, allowing us to see the glory of Christ. This change is not due to human effort but the power of God working in us. [00:43:39]
