The Shunammite woman speaks from a backslidden time in Israel to a backslidden and materialistic time in Colorado. Her world had leaders who worshiped false gods and idols, and her story says that ordinary, easy faith will not be enough in a post Christian climate. The call to overcoming faith begins with spiritual discernment, because she recognized Elisha and said, “I know that this man who often comes our way is a holy man of God.” Spiritual discernment does not come from “Bible roulette,” grabbing random verses and calling that guidance. Discernment begins by asking Jesus for eye salve, reading the Bible often, spending time with God in prayer, and testing teachers by the fruit of their lives.
