The secret place is a sacred space where we meet God in solitude, away from the distractions of daily life. It is a place where we can be genuine and open with God, cultivating an intimate relationship with Him. Jesus instructs us to "shut the door," symbolizing the need to eliminate distractions and preserve our privacy with God. In this space, our secret investments in prayer, fasting, and devotion are rewarded openly by the Father. The secret place is not just a physical location but a state of heart and mind where we intentionally seek God's presence. [02:40]
Matthew 6:6 (ESV): "But when you pray, go into your room and shut the door and pray to your Father who is in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you."
Reflection: What distractions do you need to eliminate today to create a sacred space for meeting with God?
Day 2: Experiencing the Knowledge of God
The pursuit of the secret place is fundamentally about knowing God. This involves seeking the spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of Christ, as Paul prays in Ephesians 1. It is not just an intellectual pursuit but an experiential one, as we long to know the power of His resurrection and the fellowship of His sufferings. The Bible promises that those who pursue the knowledge of God will be visited by Him, as stated in Hosea 6:3. This pursuit requires a heart that is open and willing to experience God's presence in profound ways. [05:00]
Ephesians 1:17-18 (ESV): "That the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give you the Spirit of wisdom and of revelation in the knowledge of him, having the eyes of your hearts enlightened, that you may know what is the hope to which he has called you."
Reflection: How can you seek a deeper experiential knowledge of God today, beyond just intellectual understanding?
Day 3: Discipline and Time Management in Spiritual Growth
A meaningful relationship with God requires discipline and time management. We must intentionally carve out time for the secret place and follow through with consistency. This discipline eventually turns into delight as we experience the joys of a deep relationship with Jesus. Proverbs 2 emphasizes the importance of treasuring God's commands and applying our hearts to understanding. By managing our time wisely and prioritizing our spiritual growth, we can unlock the potential of a vibrant spiritual life. [21:04]
Proverbs 2:1-5 (ESV): "My son, if you receive my words and treasure up my commandments with you, making your ear attentive to wisdom and inclining your heart to understanding; yes, if you call out for insight and raise your voice for understanding, if you seek it like silver and search for it as for hidden treasures, then you will understand the fear of the Lord and find the knowledge of God."
Reflection: What specific steps can you take today to better manage your time and prioritize your relationship with God?
Day 4: Journaling and Studying God's Word
Treasuring God's commands involves remembering and stewarding the revelations He gives us. Journaling and studying God's word are essential practices that help us hold onto these truths and receive more in the future. By writing down our reflections and insights, we create a record of God's faithfulness and guidance in our lives. This practice not only deepens our understanding of Scripture but also helps us to be more intentional in our spiritual journey. [12:08]
Psalm 119:15-16 (ESV): "I will meditate on your precepts and fix my eyes on your ways. I will delight in your statutes; I will not forget your word."
Reflection: How can you incorporate journaling into your daily routine to better steward the revelations God gives you?
Day 5: The Promise of God's Visitation
The Bible promises that those who pursue the knowledge of God will be visited by Him. As we seek Him with all our hearts, He will come to us, revealing His power and glory in our lives. This promise is a source of hope and encouragement, reminding us that our efforts to know God more deeply are not in vain. As we invest time and discipline in the secret place, we can expect to experience the transformative power of God's presence in our lives. [08:09]
Hosea 6:3 (ESV): "Let us know; let us press on to know the Lord; his going out is sure as the dawn; he will come to us as the showers, as the spring rains that water the earth."
Reflection: In what ways can you actively seek God's visitation in your life today, and how can you prepare your heart to receive His presence?

Sermon Clips
The most foundational scripture when we come to this secret place is The Sermon on the Mount, The Words of Christ, Matthew 6. He said in verse 6, "You, when you pray, go into your room, and when you have shut your door, pray to your Father who is in the secret place, and your Father who sees in secret will reward you openly." [00:01:14]
When Jesus said to shut your door, I believe he was meaning that we should have a specific place to go to. Now, I know that life has many changes, and you can't always get to the same place every day, but for the most part, have a place that is your secret place, and if it's got a door, go ahead and shut the door and pray to your Father in secret. [00:01:36]
The primary pursuit of the secret place is the knowledge of God. This is what we're after. We are in pursuit of the superior pleasures of knowing God. Paul said in his prayer in Ephesians 1, he said, "Oh, that the Father of Glory may give to you this Spirit of wisdom and Revelation in the knowledge of Christ, the eyes of your understanding being enlightened." [00:04:38]
The Bible makes a promise to those who pursue the knowledge of God. Hosea 6:3 says, "Let us pursue the knowledge of the Lord. He will come to us." I love that promise. Hosea says you go after him, he will visit you. [00:08:30]
Now, Jesus said that the scriptures, he said, "These are they which testify of me." So when you're looking into the word of God, what you're actually doing is you are pressing into the knowledge of Jesus Christ. And Jesus said to the spiritual leaders of his day, "Are you not therefore mistaken because you do not know the scriptures nor the power of God?" [00:09:46]
Treasure my commands within you. Now, when I think of treasuring the commands of God, what that means to me is don't forget the stuff God gives you from his word. I don't know how to say it strongly enough. Do whatever you have to do to remember the stuff he gives you when he speaks to you out of his word. [00:11:26]
Journal in other words, write it down. I journal in my computer, however your journal works, but do whatever you have to to hold on to it. This Luke 8 verse 18 is very important to me. Jesus said, "Therefore take heed how you hear, not just hearing with a whatever, but hearing with a heart that says I want to hold on to what you're speaking to my heart." [00:12:51]
Discipline and time management. We did a survey in our class here a couple weeks back, and when I was scrolling through the surveys, it seemed to me that the most common thing that I bummed into in your responses, you are saying consistently the number one challenge of those in our class here at least is to intentionally carve out time for the secret place and follow through. [00:21:04]
A universal principle that applies to everyone in their secret place relationship with God: the secret place requires time. You just can't have a meaningful relationship apart from investing time. That's true in our human relationships, and it's true in our relationship with Jesus Christ. And the more time you give to it, the greater your chances of unlocking the joys of the potential of the secret place. [00:23:31]
The example of Our Lord seemed to be more than a 15-minute hit and run. It seemed like when it says a long while before daylight, I don't think the Lord wants to put a time on it to say you've got to do this much, you know, so many minutes. It's not a legalistic thing, but it's the invitation to follow Jesus to the secret place and discover the joy of what could be as we give ourselves to it. [00:25:26]
If you seek her as silver and search for her as for hidden treasures, to search for treasure for me, that means study. Now studying is a different muscle group than reading. So studying, now I'm getting, now I'm using some tools to help me. I personally am a fan of a cross-reference Bible. I love these little cross references in the middle column. [00:29:34]
Proverbs 2 is telling us, he's saying journal, be disciplined, cry out for understanding, and study. Verse 5, then you will understand the fear of the Lord and find the knowledge of God. Lord Jesus, I ask that you would help us to gain the knowledge of Christ. We have to know you, and may you empower us to treasure your words, to come after your face, to know you in your fullness. [00:31:18]
