John 3:16 stands in the middle of all the flowers, candy, dinners, and Valentine expectations and says there is a love higher than all of that. Human love can be sweet, but human love often says, “I’ll show love as long as love is coming back.” God’s love does not work like that. God’s love moves first, gives first, and keeps loving even when the world is still acting like the world.

The text says, “For God so loved the world,” and that little word “so” carries weight. It puts emphasis on the action. God did not just love in a regular way. God so loved with a love that goes beyond limits, beyond boundaries, beyond what any heart can fully comprehend. The word loved is agape love, and that means God’s love has no expiration date. Milk goes bad, flowers fade, feelings shift, but God’s love never loses its value, never deteriorates, and never runs out.

The depth of God’s love shows up in the object of that love. God loved the world, not because the world had cleaned itself up, not because the world had turned around, but while the world was still the world. Romans says Christ died while sinners were still sinners, and that is the kind of love no human being can manufacture on natural strength. Christ suffered, bled, died, wore the crown of thorns, endured the nails, and took the cross because God loved first.

God’s love also teaches the believer how to love anyhow. Folk can talk, offend, mistreat, and act funny, but God’s love creates a love that does not depend on being paid back. “Anyhow love” loves not because the other person deserves it, but because God loved first. First Corinthians 13 gives the shape of that love: patient, kind, not self-seeking, not easily provoked, bearing, believing, hoping, and enduring.

The deposition, or evidence, of God’s love is found in the whosoever. John 3:16 does not shut the door on race, class, politics, money, background, or past failure. Democrats, Republicans, Black, white, rich, broke, Jew, Gentile, all stand under that word whosoever. The cross is the evidence, the empty tomb is the evidence, and every morning of mercy is evidence enough that God loves. The epitome of love is God.
