Unity in Christ: Embracing Our Mission Together

Summary

Today, we gathered as Corinth Baptist Church to celebrate and welcome new members into our faith family through baptism, a sacred act that not only signifies personal faith but also our collective unity in Christ. We began our service by baptizing Shana Wilkins, followed by her sister Bethany, and then witnessed a father, R.C., baptize his daughter, Faith. This act of faith by our new brothers and sisters exemplifies the beauty of our spiritual family growing and bonding through shared beliefs and commitments.

In my sermon, I drew from the Gospel of Mark, particularly focusing on the parable of the strong man, which Jesus used to teach His disciples about the necessity of unity and strength in overcoming evil. This parable illustrates that to effectively battle the forces of evil and save the lost, we must first bind the strong man—Satan. This can only be achieved through our unity in Christ and our collective commitment to the mission of the Church.

I emphasized the importance of understanding our primary purpose as a church. It's not about political actions, social justice alone, or merely increasing our numbers. Our core mission is to make disciples and spread the good news of Jesus Christ. This mission must transcend all other activities and be the central focus of our efforts. We discussed how easily churches can lose sight of this mission, becoming more like social clubs or political entities rather than houses of worship focused on salvation and discipleship.

Furthermore, I addressed the critical issue of division within the church. A divided church is ineffective and contradicts the message of the Gospel, which is one of reconciliation and unity. I challenged each member to embrace forgiveness and unity, to look beyond personal grievances, and to focus on our collective mission. This unity is not just an ideal but a practical necessity if we are to effectively reach out and bring others into God's family.

As we moved towards the conclusion of our service, I reiterated the power of living out the truths we profess. Our authenticity as believers is tested not just by what we preach but by how we live our lives daily. The church must be a place where love, grace, and forgiveness are not just taught but vividly demonstrated through our actions.

Key Takeaways:

1. Baptism as a Symbol of Unity and New Beginnings: The act of baptism is not just a personal declaration of faith but a powerful symbol of unity within the church. As we witnessed today, it brings individuals from diverse backgrounds into one family under Christ, strengthening our communal bonds and reinforcing our mission to live out the Gospel together. [04:04]

2. The Parable of the Strong Man - Unity Overcomes Evil: The teaching of Jesus on binding the strong man underscores the necessity of unity in our spiritual battles. As a church, our strength lies not in numbers but in our unified commitment to Christ's mission. When we stand together, focused on our divine purpose, we can overcome any force that seeks to divide or destroy us. [36:21]

3. The Purpose of the Church - Discipleship Over Distraction: It's crucial that we remember and refocus on the primary purpose of the church—making disciples. This focus must override any distractions that can lead us astray, such as political involvement or social issues that do not directly contribute to spreading the Gospel. Our effectiveness in God's mission depends on this clarity and commitment. [40:56]

4. The Danger of Division - A Call for Unity and Forgiveness: Division within the church severely hampers our ability to function as the body of Christ. Today, I called for a renewed commitment to unity and forgiveness, essential for healing and effective ministry. Let us strive to embody the reconciliation that the Gospel offers, making our church a true reflection of Christ's love. [48:00]

5. Living the Gospel - Authenticity in Action: Our faith must be evident in our actions. The world watches how we live out the Gospel we preach. By genuinely practicing love, grace, and forgiveness, we not only strengthen our witness but also draw others to Christ through our authentic living. This is the true test of our faith and the essence of our witness to the world. [52:22]

Devotional

Day 1: Baptism Unites and Renews
Baptism is not merely a personal declaration but a communal celebration of faith and renewal. As individuals from diverse backgrounds are submerged in the waters, they emerge not just as followers of Christ but as integral members of a spiritual family. This sacred act symbolizes the washing away of the old and the embrace of a new life in Christ, reinforcing the church's unity and shared mission. Witnessing these baptisms serves as a vivid reminder of our own commitments and the transformative power of our faith community. [04:04]

"Or do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? We were buried therefore with him by baptism into death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might walk in newness of life." (Romans 6:3-4 ESV)

Reflection: Reflect on your own baptism. How does this memory influence your daily walk with Christ and your connection with the church community?

Day 2: Unity is Our Strength in Spiritual Warfare
The parable of the strong man teaches us that overcoming evil requires a unified front, bound together by our faith in Christ. This unity is not just theoretical but a practical necessity for the church to effectively carry out its mission. When we stand together, our collective strength can bind the forces that seek to divide us, allowing us to rescue those ensnared by darkness. This message underscores the importance of a cohesive commitment to Christ and His teachings within our community. [36:21]

"And if a house is divided against itself, that house will not be able to stand." (Mark 3:25 ESV)

Reflection: In what ways can you contribute to strengthening the unity within your church community to better stand against the challenges and evils of the world?

Day 3: Focused Mission: Making Disciples
The primary purpose of our church is to make disciples, a mission that must transcend all distractions, whether they be political, social, or otherwise. This focus ensures that our activities and teachings consistently align with the Great Commission, guiding us to spread the good news and nurture believers towards spiritual maturity. As we prioritize discipleship, we cultivate a community deeply rooted in Christ's teachings and equipped to extend His love and truth to others. [40:56]

"And Jesus came and said to them, 'All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you.'" (Matthew 28:18-20 ESV)

Reflection: What specific steps can you take this week to engage more deeply in the disciple-making process within your community?

Day 4: Embracing Unity and Forgiveness
Division within the church not only weakens our witness but contradicts the Gospel's message of reconciliation. Today, we are called to embrace forgiveness and seek unity actively. This commitment is essential for healing and effective ministry, allowing us to truly reflect Christ's love and grace. As we strive towards reconciliation, we demonstrate the transformative power of the Gospel, making our church a beacon of hope and a true reflection of Christ's love. [48:00]

"So if you are offering your gift at the altar and there remember that your brother has something against you, leave your gift there before the altar and go. First be reconciled to your brother, and then come and offer your gift." (Matthew 5:23-24 ESV)

Reflection: Is there someone within your church community with whom you need to seek reconciliation? What steps can you take today towards healing that relationship?

Day 5: Authenticity in Our Faith Walk
Our authenticity as believers is demonstrated not merely in our words but through our actions. Living out the Gospel means practicing love, grace, and forgiveness in tangible ways that reflect our deep commitment to Christ. This authenticity strengthens our witness and draws others to Christ, showcasing the reality of our faith through our daily lives. As we align our actions with our professed beliefs, we become genuine examples of Christ's transformative power. [52:22]

"Little children, let us not love in word or talk but in deed and in truth." (1 John 3:18 ESV)

Reflection: What is one tangible way you can demonstrate the Gospel through your actions this week in your family, workplace, or community?

1. "It is about sharing life and supporting one another, it is about being a part of something bigger than themselves. I want to encourage you if the Holy Spirit is leading you, this is a place that could be home for you, it's a place that we are bound together in purpose and relationship and to our new members of our faith family. ### Quotes for Members

1. "And there's going to come a moment at some point in the future where someone says something that rubs you the wrong way there's going to come a moment in a business meeting where we have to make a decision as a family of believers and that's going to be the moment where we decide whether or not we're actually going to make a difference for the kingdom of god because it's in that moment where either grace will carry us through or we'll let it all go i challenge each of you today choose unity by choosing grace towards one another we're going to make a difference for the kingdom of god to save the lost to fight the forces of evil we got to be united in our goal we have to be united against our adversary and finally we have to be united in our connection to christ." [53:58]( | | )

2. "See, what we need most in our hearts and in our church is not strategies, it is not our programs, it is not our music, it's not even our leaders, it is the Spirit of God. And if that Spirit is alive and well in you, if you are humbling yourself and following his leading, that if you are connected to the vine as the branch, we will bear fruit. And if we're not, then anything else, I mean, I am so excited about the things that God is leading us to do in our community, and I am so excited that Ruth is leading the charge with our outreach team, and we have so many fantastic things planned that I want you to be involved in and to get connected to. But you know what the reality is, is that if you're not first connected to Christ, if you're not growing and thriving in your own faith, all the rest of it is, it's just spinning our wheels." [57:54](Download raw clip | Download cropped clip | )

3. "It starts with our own hearts, but we access that connection to Christ, not by ourselves, but as a part of a spiritual family. Now, Jesus is sitting there, and he's responding to the Pharisees, and he's got a crowd around him, and apparently his mom and his brothers made a trip over to come see Jesus, and so they're, they're having a hard time getting to him, I guess because the crowd is, is so thick, but they kind of sent word through some people that they were there, and they wanted to see Jesus, and, and at first, Jesus's response comes across maybe a little bit disrespectful. Now, I, I, like, Jesus wasn't trying to disrespect his mom, but you know, if, if your son said that to you, when you, when you showed up, like you had gone on a journey just to see him, and he shows up, and, and, and, and, and, Jesus is like, ah, who's my mother? Who's my brothers? Now, Jesus wasn't trying to be disrespectful, but he was trying to make a point, and that is that there is no greater connection on this physical earth that is stronger than the connection that we have through the Spirit of God, and that's, that's a pretty incredible thing to say."
