Believers are called to be alert and aware of the times, not caught off guard by the coming of the Lord. The Bible urges Christians to avoid spiritual complacency, to remain sober-minded, and to recognize the season of Christ’s return so that they are not surprised like those in darkness. This readiness is not about predicting the exact day or hour, but about living with spiritual vigilance, understanding that the enemy is active and the church must be prepared to stand strong and united. [03:10]
1 Thessalonians 5:1-6 (ESV)
Now concerning the times and the seasons, brothers, you have no need to have anything written to you. For you yourselves are fully aware that the day of the Lord will come like a thief in the night. While people are saying, “There is peace and security,” then sudden destruction will come upon them as labor pains come upon a pregnant woman, and they will not escape. But you are not in darkness, brothers, for that day to surprise you like a thief. For you are all children of light, children of the day. We are not of the night or of the darkness. So then let us not sleep, as others do, but let us keep awake and be sober.
Reflection: What is one practical way you can stay spiritually alert and “sober” this week, rather than letting the distractions of daily life lull you into complacency about Christ’s return?
Scripture teaches that at the coming (parousia) of the Lord, believers who are alive and those who have died in Christ will be caught up together to meet Him, marked by the sound of the trumpet. This event, often called the rapture, is described as a moment of great hope and reunion, but it is also closely tied to the timing of Christ’s visible return and the events surrounding the end times. Understanding this helps believers to anchor their hope in Christ’s promise and to live with expectation, not fear. [10:54]
1 Thessalonians 4:15-17 (ESV)
For this we declare to you by a word from the Lord, that we who are alive, who are left until the coming of the Lord, will not precede those who have fallen asleep. For the Lord himself will descend from heaven with a cry of command, with the voice of an archangel, and with the sound of the trumpet of God. And the dead in Christ will rise first. Then we who are alive, who are left, will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air, and so we will always be with the Lord.
Reflection: How does the promise of being gathered to Christ at His return shape the way you approach your daily relationships and priorities?
Before the return of Christ, Scripture reveals that there will be a great falling away and the revealing of the man of sin, the Antichrist, who will exalt himself and deceive many. Believers are called not to be deceived or shaken, but to discern the times and recognize the signs that precede Christ’s coming. This discernment is not for fear, but to strengthen faith and resolve, knowing that God’s Word prepares His people for what is to come. [18:36]
2 Thessalonians 2:1-4 (ESV)
Now concerning the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ and our being gathered together to him, we ask you, brothers, not to be quickly shaken in mind or alarmed, either by a spirit or a spoken word, or a letter seeming to be from us, to the effect that the day of the Lord has come. Let no one deceive you in any way. For that day will not come, unless the rebellion comes first, and the man of lawlessness is revealed, the son of destruction, who opposes and exalts himself against every so-called god or object of worship, so that he takes his seat in the temple of God, proclaiming himself to be God.
Reflection: In what ways can you cultivate discernment and spiritual clarity so you are not easily shaken or deceived by the events and messages of the world?
When the world is at its darkest, God’s grace abounds even more, and the church is called to shine its brightest. Rather than retreating in fear, believers are to stand strong, knowing their God and doing great exploits even in the face of opposition and tribulation. This is a time for the church to be bold, active, and victorious, trusting that God empowers His people to overcome and display His glory to the world. [26:45]
Daniel 11:32 (ESV)
He shall seduce with flattery those who violate the covenant, but the people who know their God shall stand firm and take action.
Reflection: What is one area where you sense God calling you to take bold action or stand firm in faith, even when it feels risky or countercultural?
While believers may hold different views on the timing of end-time events, unity in Christ is paramount. The enemy seeks to divide the church over secondary issues, but followers of Jesus are called to remember that they are on the same team, united by faith in Christ and the hope of His return. Maintaining love, humility, and a spirit of learning together strengthens the body and keeps the focus on what truly matters—Jesus as Lord. [00:45]
Romans 14:1, 4, 19 (ESV)
As for the one who is weak in faith, welcome him, but not to quarrel over opinions. … Who are you to pass judgment on the servant of another? It is before his own master that he stands or falls. And he will be upheld, for the Lord is able to make him stand. … So then let us pursue what makes for peace and for mutual upbuilding.
Reflection: Is there someone in your church or Christian community with whom you disagree about a non-essential issue? How can you intentionally pursue peace and unity with them this week?
The times we are living in call for a sober, unified, and alert church. While there are many perspectives on the timing of the rapture—whether before, during, or after the tribulation—what matters most is that Jesus is Lord and we are united as His body. These discussions are not meant to divide, but to help us discern the times and be prepared, as Scripture repeatedly urges us to be watchful and ready. Ignoring these topics leaves us vulnerable to the enemy’s schemes, but engaging with them in humility and love strengthens the church.
Jesus Himself said that no one knows the day or hour of His return, but Paul clarifies in 1 Thessalonians 5 that believers are not in darkness and should not be caught off guard. We are called to know the times and seasons, to be awake and sober, and to recognize the signs of His coming. The Bible gives us clear markers: the coming of the Lord (the Greek word “parousia”) and our gathering together with Him (the rapture) are tied to specific events, including the revealing of the Antichrist and the abomination in the temple. These events, as Paul explains in 2 Thessalonians 2, must take place before the return of Christ.
Scripture consistently links the rapture with the sounding of the trumpet and the visible return of Jesus, as seen in 1 Thessalonians 4, 1 Corinthians 15, and Matthew 24. The church is not called to retreat in fear but to shine brightest in the darkest times. Daniel 11 reminds us that those who know their God will be strong and do great exploits, even in the midst of tribulation. Rather than hoping for escape, we are called to be overcomers, prepared for whatever may come, so that we can fulfill our purpose and bring glory to God.
Ultimately, the exact timing of the rapture is less important than being spiritually ready and united in Christ. We are to study the Scriptures, discern the times, and encourage one another as we await His return. The conversation continues as we look deeper into Daniel’s timeline and the order of end-time events, equipping ourselves with understanding and hope.
Matthew 24:36-44 — - 1 Thessalonians 5:1-6
- Daniel 11:31-32
This isn't a point to cause division in the church. This is a conversation that I think is vitally important in the sense of knowing the times that we're living in. But if you believe we're going to be raptured before the tribulation, somebody else says after the tribulation, at the end of the day, Jesus is Lord. We're all going to spend an eternity with him. [00:00:58]
The Bible says to be sober minded and be ready. So we have to be talking about the last days and the times we're living in and not just have our head in the sand because the enemy is active. And the church has to be on top of things and know exactly what we're doing and where we are. [00:01:27]
It's very important that we don't allow these conversations to divide the church because the enemy wants to use division to weaken the body of Christ over kind of subjects like we're talking about that aren't detrimental to your salvation. But it's good for us to discuss. So whatever we're talking about, just remember, we're on the same team. We're the body of Christ. [00:02:31]
Matthew 24, 36 says, but of that day and hour, no one knows, not even the angels of heaven, but my father only. So Jesus said that and people say, so we shouldn't discuss it because we won't know. And so why even go there? And I just want to draw attention to two words in that verse there that he said, but the day and hour, no one knows. [00:03:15]
If he said day and hour, then we take him at his word and no one knows, not even Jesus, the day or hour. But there's another scripture that you almost would think would contradict that if you weren't aware of what Jesus was saying. And it's in first, first Thessalonians chapter five. [00:03:49]
But you, brethren, are not in darkness so that this day should overtake you as a thief. You're all sons of light and sons of the day, and we are not of night nor of darkness. Therefore, let us not sleep as others do, but let us watch and be sober. [00:04:52]
We are to know the times and the seasons, that first verse says. So we need to discuss the season of his return, and I even think we can narrow it down pretty much to a, not a broad season, not like in the next hundred years, but I think God wants us to know within a couple years so that the body of Christ knows time is short, here's what we have to do before Jesus returns. [00:05:11]
The church is going to be its brightest when the world's at its darkest and so it's not something to hide from but in uh first thessalonians chapter 4 um paul's talking about the coming of the lord and this is so clear if you can stay with me for a couple seconds here the word coming so let's just read in verse 15 second first thessalonians 4 15 for this we say to you by the word of the lord that we who are alive and remain until the coming of the lord will by no means precede those who are asleep. [00:11:07]
For the lord himself will descend from heaven with a shout here we go the voice of an archangel and with the trumpet of god and the dead in christ will rise first and then we who are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the lord in the air and thus we shall always be with the lord. [00:12:12]
Let no one deceive you by any means. That day, what day? The perusia, the coming of the Lord, will not come unless the falling away. That word falling away is apostasy, which means rebellion. So that day will not come until unless the falling away comes first and the man of sin is revealed, the son of perdition, who opposes and exalts himself above all that is called God that is worshipped, and that he sits in the temple of God showing himself that he's God. [00:14:00]
Paul clearly says that before Jesus returns, there's going to be a temple, and the Antichrist is going to sit in that temple and claim to be God. So he really just kind of gives us right there, it's pretty clear, before that happens in that time of tribulation, it has to be after that when Jesus returns. [00:14:51]
After the tribulation, the Son of Man will come, verse 31, and he will send his angels with the great sound of a trumpet and they will gather together. That's that same Greek word, epizunago again. And so he's now Jesus is saying the same thing that Paul said in multiple places, and all of it is cohesive and fits perfectly together. [00:17:45]
All of these rapture, end times, return of Christ scriptures, they all have trumpet in them. They're talking about the trumpet. I mean even first corinthians 15 verse 51 and 52 he said behold i tell you a mystery we shall not all sleep but we shall all be changed in a moment in the twinkling of an eye at the last trumpet for the trumpet will sound the dead in christ will be raised incorruptible and we shall be changed. [00:18:28]
If you're believing and you're planning and living like the rapture will happen before the tribulation and you're wrong, then you're unprepared. And the Bible says you're not sober minded. You're not alert. You're not knowing what to expect as children of the light. And so even with that, it's better to lean and to be ready and have your spirit strong and to know what potentially is coming so that you can be an overcomer in that season. [00:20:17]
Those who know their God will be strong and do exploits. Well, in that context, the verses before and right around there, it's talking about the Antichrist and all that he's going to be doing. And then it talks about those who know their God, like on the earth during the time of the Antichrist, that's whenever we have the exploits, the miracles, and the church shines the most. [00:26:11]
God doesn't have a retreat mindset. So if the enemy is pouring out his thing, God's not going to say, well, we're scared we hide. He's going to have us be offensive. [00:26:36]
We just talked about clearly what I believe is that when the rapture takes place in scripture, which I believe is after the tribulation, some of you out there might be thinking, I still believe it's before, but hey, we're all on the same team. Jesus is still Lord. Study it out yourself. [00:26:45]
