Unity and Hope: Easter Celebration in Crisis

Summary

As we gather for this Global Easter Prayer Gathering, we are reminded of the unique challenges and opportunities presented by the current global pandemic. This year marks the 40th anniversary of Saddleback Church, and while we cannot gather in person, we are united in spirit and purpose. This gathering is a testament to the resilience and adaptability of the Church, as we come together from all corners of the world to pray, worship, and support one another.

The pandemic has forced us to rethink how we celebrate Easter, but it has also opened new avenues for connection and ministry. With technology, we are more connected than ever, and this Easter, 2.3 billion believers will celebrate the resurrection of Jesus Christ in their hearts and homes. This is a time to remember that Easter is not confined to a location; it is a celebration of hope and renewal.

We are joined by respected leaders from every continent, each bringing their unique perspective and prayers for different aspects of this crisis. From praying for those who are anxious and fearful, to health workers risking their lives, to churches facing financial hardship, we are reminded of the global impact of this pandemic and the need for collective prayer and action.

This is a humbling time for all of us, as we face challenges that defy easy answers. Yet, it is also a time to deepen our faith and reliance on God. We are called to be the light in these dark days, to stand firm in our faith, and to proclaim the good news of Jesus Christ with renewed vigor and creativity. This is a season of increased openness to the gospel, and we have the opportunity to reach more people than ever before.

As we navigate these uncertain times, let us hold fast to the promises of God, trusting that He is in control and that He will bring good out of this situation. Let us pray for spiritual revival, for our personal relationships with God, and for the strength to be vessels of His love and grace in the world.

Devotional

Day 1: Unity in Diversity
In times of global crisis, the Church is called to demonstrate unity in diversity, emphasizing shared faith over differences. This unity is a powerful witness to the world, showing that believers can come together in prayer and purpose despite varied traditions and backgrounds. The Global Easter Prayer Gathering exemplifies this unity, as leaders from different continents and denominations join in collective prayer, highlighting the strength found in diversity. This unity is not just about coming together physically but spiritually, as believers support one another and share the love of Jesus Christ. [01:35]

Ephesians 4:3-6 (ESV): "Eager to maintain the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. There is one body and one Spirit—just as you were called to the one hope that belongs to your call—one Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father of all, who is over all and through all and in all."

Reflection: Think of a fellow believer from a different tradition or background. How can you reach out to them this week to foster unity and understanding in your shared faith?

Day 2: Easter Beyond Boundaries
The pandemic has redefined how Easter is celebrated, reminding believers that the essence of Easter transcends physical gatherings. It is a celebration of the resurrection of Jesus Christ in the hearts of believers, regardless of location. This global crisis has opened new avenues for connection and ministry, as technology allows believers to unite in spirit and purpose. The Church is reminded that it is not confined to buildings but is a living body of believers who can share the gospel in innovative ways. [02:57]

John 4:21-24 (ESV): "Jesus said to her, 'Woman, believe me, the hour is coming when neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem will you worship the Father. You worship what you do not know; we worship what we know, for salvation is from the Jews. But the hour is coming, and is now here, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for the Father is seeking such people to worship him.'"

Reflection: How can you creatively celebrate and share the message of Easter with someone who may not be able to attend a traditional service this year?

Day 3: Facing Fear with Faith
In the midst of the pandemic, many are experiencing anxiety and fear. However, believers are reminded that God has not given a spirit of fear but of power, love, and self-control. By turning to God in prayer, believers can find peace and strength to face life's uncertainties. This is a time to deepen faith and reliance on God, trusting in His promises and finding comfort in His presence. The Church is called to be a beacon of hope, offering prayers and support to those in need. [08:28]

Isaiah 41:10 (ESV): "Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand."

Reflection: Identify a specific fear or anxiety you are facing today. How can you bring this to God in prayer and seek His peace and guidance?

Day 4: Opportunity in Crisis
The current crisis presents not only challenges but also opportunities for the Church to shine. As people search for hope and meaning, believers have the chance to share the life-changing message of Jesus Christ with renewed vigor and creativity. This is a season of increased openness to the gospel, and the Church is called to be the light in dark times, proclaiming the good news with boldness and compassion. The crisis is a reminder that God can bring good out of difficult situations, using them for His purposes. [24:39]

Colossians 4:5-6 (ESV): "Walk in wisdom toward outsiders, making the best use of the time. Let your speech always be gracious, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how you ought to answer each person."

Reflection: What is one practical way you can share the hope of the gospel with someone in your life who is searching for meaning during this crisis?

Day 5: Dependence on God
In challenging times, believers are called to depend on God and His promises. The assurance that God works for the good of those who love Him provides comfort and hope, even in the midst of a pandemic. This is a time to trust in God's sovereignty and to be instruments of His love and grace in the world. By holding fast to God's promises, believers can find strength and courage to navigate uncertain times, knowing that He is in control and will bring good out of every situation. [01:00:55]

Psalm 46:1-3 (ESV): "God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear though the earth gives way, though the mountains be moved into the heart of the sea, though its waters roar and foam, though the mountains tremble at its swelling."

Reflection: Reflect on a promise of God that you find particularly comforting. How can you hold onto this promise and let it guide your actions and thoughts this week?

Quotes

This Easter is like none we've ever experienced not in our lifetime in fact this is the first time in 2,000 years of Christian that church is all around the world will be unable to gather in in large groups to celebrate Easter but I'm here to tell you that while we aren't able to assemble the resurrection of Jesus Christ will still be celebrated everywhere in hearts and homes. [00:02:03]

We may be a part but we're not alone and we may be separated but we're not isolated and this may be bad weather but we're still together Easter is not a location it's a celebration and now with technology we're more connected than ever before. [00:02:41]

Many of them say the right thing because they know what we want to hear but belief those positive confessions there is this ease we need to pray for them I want to make the pastors aware of the fact that domestic violence is on the rise in many many cities domestic violence is escalating because even though people say the right thing in public at home they go home to xiety and worry. [00:06:09]

We know in your word Lord that you said you've not given us the spirit of fear but of power and of love and a sound mind and yet we are so human that sometimes we are afraid and yet we know in your word you said be anxious for nothing but in everything by prayer and supplication make your requests made known unto God. [00:08:25]

The current crisis is not just a time of danger but also a time of opportunity for the Church of Jesus Christ to turn to the Lord together in prayer and we pray for more than just an end to the pandemic but for God's name to be exalted in all the earth for lives to be safe for churches to be revived for Nations to be transformed and for the world to be evangelists. [00:24:54]

I love challenging our church to step out there and actually be the light when in Isaiah 16 the Bible says arise and shine for your light has come and the glory of the Lord is risen upon you and Kings shall come to the brightness of your rising and it goes on in that fashion now I'd love to take a hold of that and believe our light has come this is our day. [00:34:44]

I think we with confidence and with faith in our heart need to hold close to the message that we have and realize that people need people want what we have already the Google searches for words like prayer and faith and hope have skyrocketed because people are hungry right now and we have the chance to be the light. [00:35:34]

We're gonna see God do good things we're gonna report of reaching more people than we've ever ever reached before we're gonna ask God to make us so innovative the people have drawn people are hungry in the middle of it let's not be fearful there's not be nervous let's remember that God is on our side. [00:37:46]

We need to pray for ourself we need to pray for a fellowship with God we need to pay for a revived relationship with God we need to seek God for our own spiritual revival we need to pray for our families and many families on this continent of Africa there are many broken and the devil knows where to attack when he attacks our homes our families our children. [00:54:00]

To make it through a dark day you've got to hold on to a promise and to me the great promise that is going to carry us through this time is Romans 8:28 and we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him who are the called according to his purpose now that's not a promise for everybody it's only a promise for his church for those who love God are called the part of his purpose. [01:00:46]

As we depend on Christ we know that even in bad times God specializes in bringing good out of bad that's the message of Easter that's the message of Resurrection God loves to turn crucifixions into resurrections bad times for the world can be good times for the church because it's time for us to shine to show our love to show our grace to show our compassion for the least the last the lost the sick the confused everybody around. [01:01:46]

Your ministry matters to God and in this day where everything is changing because of this pandemic economies are changing alliances are changing values are changing the one thing that is unchangeable is that Christ the Bible says died for his church it is his bride it is his flock it is the body of Christ it is his family and the greatest privilege is the privilege we've been given to shepherd a portion of the flock of God.
