Paul calls the church in Ephesians 4 to “take it off.” The old way of life is like those ragged, comfortable clothes stuffed in a dresser drawer, familiar enough to keep even when they have holes all through them. The former life can feel like a comfort blanket when life gets hard, whether its sins are obvious or dressed up as ego, pride, self-righteousness, and a heart that wants the throne.
The Gentile way of walking is futile because it chases what cannot last. Futility is emptiness, a life spent running after fleeting feelings, temporary thrills, and everything under the sun that Solomon called vanity. The world treats knowledge as information instead of transformation because it wants truth without accountability. The darkened mind does not suffer from innocent ignorance, but from a deliberate refusal to acknowledge God.
The hardened heart becomes callous and loses the ability to feel guilt, shame, or contentment. Sensuality becomes more than one dark sin, because it becomes a life lived for the five senses: “How can I feel something?” The flesh always demands more, and every thrill eventually needs to become bigger to give the same feeling. The problem in discipleship is not a lack of information but an inability to address the issues of the heart.
Christ stands against a faith that only knows correct words but never produces a changed life. True faith goes to work because the Holy Spirit changes the desires of the heart, the mind, and the direction of a person’s life. Truth is not a concept. Truth is a person, Jesus Christ, and believers learn Him, hear Him through the gospel, and submit to His rule and reign.
Paul gives the church a complete wardrobe change: put off the old self, be renewed in the spirit of the mind, and put on the new self. The old self belongs to Adam, is corrupt through deceitful desires, and must be stripped off like filthy rags. The renewal of the mind bridges the gap between taking off the old and putting on the new, yet only the Holy Spirit can change a person’s default setting. The new self belongs to Christ and pursues righteousness, holiness, and His character day by day.
The already and not yet defines this fight. Christ has already broken the chains of sin, yet the old man still tries to rise up and feels glued to the skin. The struggle does not mean the cross failed. Christ has equipped His people for the battle, calls them to consider themselves dead to sin, and will finish the fight when He returns. Communion then demands an honest examination, because loyalty cannot be split between the Lord’s table and the table of demons.

Key Takeaways
- 1. Familiar sin still feels comfortable. [02:12] The old life often returns wearing the clothes of comfort, not rebellion. Familiar patterns can feel safe precisely because they once ruled the heart for so long. Christ does not call His people to store those old garments for hard days, but to clear out the drawers completely. [02:12]
- 2. Truth must transform the heart. [13:32] Correct theology can sit in a mind that remains resistant to Christ. Demons possess accurate facts about God, yet they do not love, trust, or obey Him. Genuine knowledge of God reaches the heart and produces a life that matches the confession that Jesus is Lord. [13:32]
- 3. Christ is truth, not mere information. [20:46] The world offers endless competing truths because it wants truth to conform to personal desire. Jesus does not offer a concept to analyze but Himself to receive, know, and obey. Hearing Christ through His Word means coming under His living authority. [20:46]
- 4. Renewal requires the Spirit’s power. [25:58] Behavior modification cannot carry a person far when the mind still runs on its old default setting. The Holy Spirit changes perception, desires, and the way reality is seen. Submission replaces white-knuckling because transformation is God’s supernatural work from the inside out. [25:58]
- 5. Loyalty cannot be split. [34:24] Communion confronts every attempt to remain joined to Christ while holding onto the old self. The Lord’s table calls for self-examination, repentance, and a real turning from darkness. Christ’s finished work gives rest, but it never gives permission to eat from two tables.
