Ephesians 4:1-16 “I therefore, a prisoner for the Lord, urge you to walk in a manner worthy of the calling to which you have been called, with all humility and gentleness, with patience, bearing with one another in love, eager to maintain the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. There is one body and one Spirit—just as you were called to the one hope that belongs to your call— one Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father of all, who is over all and through all and in all. But grace was given to each one of us according to the measure of Christ's gift. Therefore it says, 'When he ascended on high he led a host of captives, and he gave gifts to men.' (In saying, 'He ascended,' what does it mean but that he had also descended into the lower regions, the earth? He who descended is the one who also ascended far above all the heavens, that he might fill all things.) And he gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the shepherds and teachers, to equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ, until we all attain to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to mature manhood, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ, so that we may no longer be children, tossed to and fro by the waves and carried about by every wind of doctrine, by human cunning, by craftiness in deceitful schemes. Rather, speaking the truth in love, we are to grow up in every way into him who is the head, into Christ, from whom the whole body, joined and held together by every joint with which it is supplied, when each part is working properly, makes the body grow so that it builds itself up in love.”
[32:40]1 Corinthians 12:12-27 “For just as the body is one and has many members, and all the members of the body, though many, are one body, so it is with Christ. For in one Spirit we were all baptized into one body—Jews or Greeks, slaves or free—and all were made to drink of one Spirit. For the body does not consist of one member but of many. If the foot should say, 'Because I am not a hand, I do not belong to the body,' that would not make it any less a part of the body. And if the ear should say, 'Because I am not an eye, I do not belong to the body,' that would not make it any less a part of the body. If the whole body were an eye, where would be the sense of hearing? If the whole body were an ear, where would be the sense of smell? But as it is, God arranged the members in the body, each one of them, as he chose. If all were a single member, where would the body be? As it is, there are many parts, yet one body. The eye cannot say to the hand, 'I have no need of you,' nor again the head to the feet, 'I have no need of you.' On the contrary, the parts of the body that seem to be weaker are indispensable, and on those parts of the body that we think less honorable we bestow the greater honor, and our unpresentable parts are treated with greater modesty, which our more presentable parts do not require. But God has so composed the body, giving greater honor to the part that lacked it, that there may be no division in the body, but that the members may have the same care for one another. If one member suffers, all suffer together; if one member is honored, all rejoice together. Now you are the body of Christ and individually members of it.”
[41:19]Romans 6:3-4 “Do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? We were buried therefore with him by baptism into death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might walk in newness of life.”
[33:03]Observation questions
- In Ephesians 4:1-3, what attitudes does Paul name as part of living a life worthy of the calling believers have received? [35:25]
- What repeated “one” realities does Paul list in Ephesians 4:4-6, and what do they show about the church’s shared identity?
- According to Ephesians 4:11-13, what is the purpose of apostles, prophets, evangelists, pastors, and teachers? [46:28]
- In the body pictures from Ephesians 4 and 1 Corinthians 12, what happens when a part is disconnected or refuses to do its work? [42:28]
Interpretation questions
- Paul calls believers to live worthy of a calling they have already received. How does this keep Christian growth from becoming an attempt to earn God’s love or salvation? [32:47]
- Why does Paul connect humility, gentleness, patience, and bearing with one another to protecting unity? What kinds of division do these qualities address in an ordinary church family? [37:29]
- Biblical hope is described as confidence in what Christ has secured rather than uncertainty about the future. How can that kind of hope make a believer steadier during hardship? [40:28]
- Paul says leaders equip God’s people for service so the body can mature. Why is a mature Christian more than someone who has attended church for many years? [49:34]
Application questions
- Baptism means that the old life has been drowned and a new person has been raised with Christ. Where are yesterday’s failures, shame, or regrets making it difficult to receive today as a new day of forgiveness? [33:03]
- Humility is not thinking less of oneself but thinking of oneself less often. In what relationship might it look like to focus less on being noticed, affirmed, or proven right and more on serving the other person? [35:29]
- Patience means coming alongside someone and walking at their pace rather than demanding that they keep up. Who in your life may need that kind of patient presence right now, and what could it look like this week? [36:02]
- Bearing with one another includes both helping carry real burdens and enduring one another’s rough edges. Which side is harder for you: asking others to help carry a burden, or patiently bearing with someone else’s weakness? [36:45]
- Isolation can feel easier or safer, but Christ forms His people into one body for encouragement, correction, and growth. What might tempt you to remain “half in” with Christian community, and what is one step toward deeper connection? [42:56]
- Christ gives each believer gifts to build up the body in love. What gifts, abilities, experience, or encouragement might God be inviting you to use for the good of someone else in the church? [52:33]
