Undivided Attention: Letting Jesus Be In Control

Romans 12 calls believers to live with an undivided attention, even when life is loud, painful, and full of distractions. Jesus must remain the main focal point because Jesus is Savior, Redeemer, Friend, and the One preparing a place for those who belong to Him. Colossians 1 declares that all things were created through Jesus and for Jesus, and in Him all things hold together. The gospel anchors attention on truths that cannot be earned: God is all powerful, Jesus loves His people, the Holy Spirit is present, and believers are children of God.

Paul writes to believers living under real pressure in Rome, surrounded by persecution, false gods, social pressure, and uncertainty. Romans 12 gives them compass points for how to keep following Jesus without letting the world overwhelm them. The Holy Spirit comes alongside as parakletos, helping God’s children become more like Jesus day by day. Jesus does not call His people to manufacture strength on their own, but to press into the power and person of the Holy Spirit.

Romans 12:14 puts the hard part right out in front: “Bless those who persecute you. Bless and do not curse.” Paul calls believers to respond differently than the flesh wants to respond. Retaliation feels natural, but blessing means speaking well, desiring good, and refusing to let another person’s evil produce evil within the heart. Forgiveness does not pretend an offense never happened. Grace does not remove healthy boundaries. Believers can call wrong what it is, seek justice, establish boundaries, and still refuse hatred and revenge.

Jesus stands as the ultimate example. Jesus was falsely accused, beaten, rejected, spit upon, and crucified, yet He prayed, “Father, forgive them.” Jesus did not merely speak this kind of life; He lived it with His hands and feet pierced on the cross. The gospel is not merely good news about something that might happen. The gospel proclaims what God has already accomplished through Jesus Christ: forgiveness, new life, reconciliation with God, righteous living, and eternal hope.

Romans 12 also calls believers to let God be in control. God calls His people to care deeply, rejoice with those who rejoice, weep with those who weep, pursue peace, and refuse revenge. God does not call His people to control every outcome, every person, or every future. The attention of a follower of Jesus belongs on obedience, while the outcome belongs to God. Nothing should eclipse Jesus, His cross, His empty tomb, His love, or the truth that He is coming back.
