Undignified Worship: Embracing Humility Before God

Summary

In my recent sermon, I addressed the concept of dignity and how it often hinders our worship and relationship with God. I emphasized that as believers, we should not be overly concerned with our appearance or reputation before the world. Instead, we should focus on our identity as kings and priests unto God, as stated in Revelation 1:6, and prioritize our worship and relationship with Him.

I discussed the importance of atmosphere and environment in worship, highlighting that worship is not confined to the church setting but begins in the privacy of our homes. Worship is about humbling oneself and exalting Christ. The church serves as a training ground, teaching us to worship freely and without judgment, preparing us to carry that worship into the world.

I delved into the omnipresence of God, explaining that while God is everywhere, there is a distinction when His manifest presence, or glory, is experienced. This was illustrated by recent moments in our services when we felt a tangible shift in the atmosphere as we gathered around the altar.

I used the analogy of a fisherman catching a shark to illustrate the importance of being in the right environment. Just as a shark is powerful in the water but helpless on a boat, we too can feel out of place and powerless when we are not in the right spiritual environment.

I recounted the biblical story of David and Michal from 2 Samuel 6, focusing on David's undignified worship as he brought the Ark of the Covenant back to Jerusalem. Despite being king, David set aside his royal garments and danced before the Lord with all his might. Michal, observing from a palace window, despised him for his undignified behavior. I emphasized that our worship should be genuine and not performed to impress others, but solely for God.

I encouraged the congregation to worship freely, without concern for the opinions of others. Worship should be an expression of our gratitude and love for God, who has chosen and appointed us. I reminded everyone that our worship can have spiritual implications, piercing through darkness and confusion, and inviting the presence of heaven into our midst.

Finally, I urged the congregation to become even more undignified in their worship, following David's example. By humbling ourselves and decreasing in earthly standing, we allow God's presence to increase in our lives, leading to greater blessings and opportunities to glorify Jesus.

Key Takeaways:

- True worship requires a heart posture of humility and a focus on exalting Christ above all else. When we worship, it's not about the songs or the dance, but about the condition of our hearts before God. Worship is an intimate act of surrender, where we acknowledge His sovereignty and our dependence on Him. [01:32:38]

- The manifest presence of God is distinct from His omnipresence. It is in these moments of heightened spiritual awareness that we encounter God in a more profound and transformative way. Creating an environment conducive to experiencing God's manifest presence is essential for our spiritual growth and vitality. [01:33:22]

- Our spiritual environment is crucial to our strength and effectiveness as believers. Just as a shark is dominant in its natural habitat but powerless out of it, we too must ensure we are in the right spiritual environment to thrive and manifest the power of God in our lives. [01:34:49]

- Genuine worship cannot be coerced or fabricated. It springs from a heart that is truly grateful and aware of God's presence and work in our lives. When our worship is authentic, it has the power to pierce through spiritual darkness and invite heavenly intervention. [01:27:03]

- Embracing a posture of undignified worship, as King David did, allows us to experience a greater measure of God's presence. When we decrease, He increases. This principle is not about physical posture but about the attitude of making ourselves less to make more room for God in our lives. [01:30:24]

Day 1: Humility: The Heart of Worship
True worship is not about the external display but the internal disposition of humility before God. It is in the quiet surrender of one's heart that the essence of worship is found. Worship is an intimate act, a moment where the soul acknowledges the majesty and sovereignty of God, recognizing its complete dependence on Him. It is not the grandeur of the music or the eloquence of the words that reaches the heart of God, but the genuine humility and reverence that emanates from the worshiper. This humility is not a sign of weakness but of strength, as it positions the believer to receive from God and to be transformed by His presence. Worship, in its truest form, is a reflection of a heart that has been touched by divine grace and responds in awe and gratitude. [01:32:38]

Psalm 51:16-17 (ESV)
"For you will not delight in sacrifice, or I would give it; you will not be pleased with a burnt offering. The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit; a broken and contrite heart, O God, you will not despise."

Reflection: In what ways can you cultivate a more humble heart to enhance your personal worship experience?

Day 2: Encountering God's Manifest Presence
The omnipresence of God is a comforting truth, but there is something extraordinary about experiencing His manifest presence. This is when the veil between heaven and earth seems to thin, and the reality of God's nearness is palpable. It is in these moments that believers are often left in awe, transformed by an encounter with the divine. To facilitate such encounters, one must be intentional about creating an environment that invites God's manifest presence. This could be through prayer, worship, or simply cultivating a sense of expectancy and openness to the Holy Spirit. The manifest presence of God is where deep spiritual growth and vitality are nurtured, leading to a more profound understanding of God and His purposes. [01:33:22]

Exodus 33:14-15 (ESV)
"And he said, 'My presence will go with you, and I will give you rest.' And he said to him, 'If your presence will not go with us, do not bring us up from here.'"

Reflection: How can you intentionally create space in your daily life to invite and experience God's manifest presence?

Day 3: Thriving in the Right Spiritual Environment
The environment in which one finds oneself can greatly affect spiritual strength and effectiveness. Just as a shark is dominant in the water but powerless on land, believers must be mindful of their spiritual surroundings. Being in the right environment is crucial for thriving in the faith and manifesting God's power. This means surrounding oneself with godly influences, engaging in spiritual disciplines, and being part of a community that encourages growth and accountability. It is in these settings that one's spiritual life is nurtured, and the believer is equipped to face the challenges of the world with divine strength. [01:34:49]

Jeremiah 17:7-8 (ESV)
"Blessed is the man who trusts in the Lord, whose trust is the Lord. He is like a tree planted by water, that sends out its roots by the stream, and does not fear when heat comes, for its leaves remain green, and is not anxious in the year of drought, for it does not cease to bear fruit."

Reflection: What changes can you make to ensure you are in a spiritual environment that allows you to thrive and reflect God's power?

Day 4: The Power of Authentic Worship
Authentic worship is a powerful force that can pierce through darkness and confusion, bringing about spiritual breakthroughs and heavenly intervention. It is not something that can be manufactured or performed; it must spring from a heart that is truly grateful and aware of God's presence and work. Authentic worship is characterized by sincerity and vulnerability, offering God the highest praise regardless of one's circumstances. It is a testament to the believer's faith and trust in God, serving as a beacon of light that can dispel the shadows of doubt and fear. [01:27:03]

1 Thessalonians 1:9-10 (ESV)
"For they themselves report concerning us the kind of reception we had among you, and how you turned to God from idols to serve the living and true God, and to wait for his Son from heaven, whom he raised from the dead, Jesus who delivers us from the wrath to come."

Reflection: What does authentic worship look like in your life, and how can you express it more fully in both private and corporate settings?

Day 5: Embracing Undignified Worship
The biblical account of King David dancing before the Ark of the Covenant with all his might is a powerful example of undignified worship. It is a call to lay aside concerns about reputation and appearance, to worship God with abandon. This kind of worship is not concerned with the opinions of others but is focused solely on God. It is an act of humility, where the worshiper becomes less so that God can become more. Embracing undignified worship is about allowing God's presence to increase in one's life, which in turn leads to greater blessings and opportunities to glorify Him. [01:30:24]

2 Samuel 6:21-22 (ESV)
"And David said to Michal, 'It was before the Lord, who chose me above your father and above all his house, to appoint me as prince over Israel, the people of the Lord—and I will celebrate before the Lord. I will make myself yet more contemptible than this, and I will be abased in your eyes. But by the female servants of whom you have spoken, by them I shall be held in honor.'"

Reflection: In what ways can you become more undignified in your worship, focusing less on self and more on God's glory?
