Understanding Unanswered Prayer: Aligning with God's Will
Devotional
Day 1: Aligning Desires with God's Will
Understanding unanswered prayer involves recognizing that it is not about God ignoring us but about aligning our desires with His will. Often, God's responses to our prayers are "no" or "wait," which can be challenging to accept. However, these answers require our trust and acceptance, as they are part of His greater wisdom. By aligning our desires with God's will, we learn to trust in His perfect plan rather than our own understanding. This alignment is a journey of faith, where we grow in our relationship with God and learn to see His hand in every aspect of our lives. [10:08]
Isaiah 55:8-9 (ESV): "For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, declares the Lord. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts."
Reflection: What is one desire or prayer request you have that you need to align with God's will? How can you begin to trust His timing and wisdom in this area today?
Day 2: Removing Barriers to Prayer
Several factors can hinder our prayers, such as unbelief, lack of Bible engagement, and relational issues. Recognizing these obstacles is crucial as it allows us to address and remove barriers in our spiritual life. By identifying these hindrances, we are prompted to examine our spiritual walk and make necessary corrections. This process is a gift, as it leads us to a deeper relationship with God and a more effective prayer life. It is essential to approach prayer with the right heart, seeking God's will rather than imposing our own. [12:49]
James 4:3 (ESV): "You ask and do not receive, because you ask wrongly, to spend it on your passions."
Reflection: Identify one potential barrier in your life that might be hindering your prayers. What steps can you take today to address and remove this barrier?
Day 3: Balancing Theology and Relationship
While theology is important, it should not overshadow our personal relationship with Jesus. Our focus should be on living out our faith and maintaining a vibrant connection with Christ. Theology should serve as a foundation that supports our relationship with Jesus, not an idol that overshadows it. By keeping this balance, we ensure that our faith is not just intellectual but also deeply personal and transformative. This balance allows us to experience the fullness of life in Christ and to grow in our love and devotion to Him. [19:24]
Colossians 2:6-7 (ESV): "Therefore, as you received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in him, rooted and built up in him and established in the faith, just as you were taught, abounding in thanksgiving."
Reflection: How can you ensure that your study of theology enhances rather than overshadows your personal relationship with Jesus? What practical steps can you take to maintain this balance?
Day 4: Embracing Holiness Without Legalism
Recognizing God's holiness is essential, but we must avoid legalism by understanding that our standing with God is based on His grace, not our works. This perspective guards against a performance-based faith and reminds us that our relationship with God is rooted in His love and grace. Embracing holiness involves living a life that reflects God's character while relying on His grace to transform us. It is a journey of becoming more like Christ, not through our efforts but through His work in us. [58:18]
Galatians 5:1 (ESV): "For freedom Christ has set us free; stand firm therefore, and do not submit again to a yoke of slavery."
Reflection: In what ways might you be tempted to fall into legalism in your spiritual life? How can you embrace God's grace and holiness without relying on your own efforts?
Day 5: Engaging in Spiritual Warfare Through Prayer
Prayer is a powerful tool in spiritual warfare, aligning us with God's purposes and enabling us to stand firm against spiritual opposition. Through prayer, we engage in the battle against darkness and align ourselves with God's will. It is through this spiritual discipline that we find strength and courage to face the challenges of life. Prayer is not just a means of communication with God but a weapon that empowers us to overcome the enemy and live victoriously in Christ. [28:44]
Ephesians 6:18 (ESV): "Praying at all times in the Spirit, with all prayer and supplication. To that end, keep alert with all perseverance, making supplication for all the saints."
Reflection: How can you incorporate prayer as a tool for spiritual warfare in your daily life? What specific area of your life needs God's intervention and strength through prayer today?
Sermon Summary

Sermon Clips
Unanswered prayer is something that should concern us. If you pray for something and there is no answer to it, you should be concerned about that. It did concern the apostle Paul when his prayer in Second Corinthians chapter 12, I'm talking about verses 7 and 9, Paul said that he prayed regarding his thorn in the flesh and he prayed three times before he received some kind of answer to God. [00:06:33]
We understand that prayer is more than asking God for things. Now, in this particular thing I'm talking about now, I'm talking about asking God for things, but we understand that prayer is much more than making requests. That's just one aspect of prayer. It just happens to be the aspect of prayer that we're talking about right now. [00:07:16]
Prayer is not about getting my will done, but it is about getting God's will done. And let's be honest, sometimes we have a correct idea about what God's will in a situation is, and we pray for that. Sometimes we can think something is in God's will or that it's promised by Him, and we can be mistaken about that. [00:08:19]
Yes is an answer to prayer, but no is also an answer to prayer, and wait is an additional answer to prayer. Now, let's be honest, when we pray, especially if we're praying for something, yes is the answer that we want. We're not so excited about the no answer or the wait answer, but you have to admit those are answers from God. [00:09:39]
The Bible actually gives us many reasons for unanswered prayer, and I just want to talk to you about a few of them. These are obstacles that God helping us and His Spirit working within us, we can put these obstacles out of the way as we walk in the Lord and diligently pursue Him. [00:12:18]
Unbelief can be a reason for unanswered prayer. Matthew chapter 17 verses 20 and 21 says this: So Jesus said to them, because of your unbelief, for assuredly I say to you that if you have faith as a mustard seed, you'll say to this mountain, move from here to there, and it will move, and nothing will be impossible for you. [00:13:49]
A bad marriage relationship can be the reason for unanswered prayer. First Peter chapter 3 verse 7 says this: Husbands likewise dwell with your wives with understanding, giving honor to the wife as to the weaker vessel and being heirs together of the grace of life, that your prayers may not be hindered. [00:15:07]
If prayer is unanswered, it might be a signal that something is wrong in your Christian life, that something is wrong in your walk with God. Now, I don't say that to bring condemnation on anybody. This is actually a gift from God. It can be a warning sign, hey, there's something you need to give attention to. [00:17:10]
The fundamental way that the battle is fought in spiritual warfare is in and through prayer. So anyway, that's a great question. I hope I've been able to shed at least a little bit of light, but some of the aspects that you we honestly we just don't know the full extent of this. [00:28:44]
The important thing about legalism and to avoid legalism is simply this: we need to recognize that our standing with God, what God thinks about us, is not based on what we do for God, but it's based on what God has done for us in Jesus Christ. [00:58:18]
God is holy and what that fundamentally means is that He is different than us. He is apart from us. We make a great error when we think that God is just a super man, in other words, that He is just super human. God is not human, although let's remember Jesus Christ added unfallen humanity to His deity. [00:56:18]
Our standing with God, what God thinks of us, is not fundamentally based on what we do for Him, but on what He has done for us. That is the great guard rail for avoiding legalism. When we start thinking that, fundamentally speaking, God's opinion of us is based on what we do for Him, that distorts all of our thinking. [00:59:18]
