Understanding the Dimensions of Salvation in Christ
Devotional
Day 1: Salvation: A Journey Through Time
Salvation is a multifaceted concept that includes past, present, and future dimensions. It is not merely a past event but an ongoing process and a future hope. Understanding this helps us appreciate the depth and breadth of God's work in our lives. [02:11]
Ephesians 1:13-14 (ESV): "In him you also, when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation, and believed in him, were sealed with the promised Holy Spirit, who is the guarantee of our inheritance until we acquire possession of it, to the praise of his glory."
Reflection: Consider how you have experienced salvation in your past, present, and future. How does this understanding change the way you live your daily life today?
Day 2: Made Alive in Christ
The past aspect of salvation is the decisive act of God making us alive in Christ. This is a completed action that signifies our rescue from spiritual death and our new life in Christ. [04:05]
Colossians 2:13-14 (ESV): "And you, who were dead in your trespasses and the uncircumcision of your flesh, God made alive together with him, having forgiven us all our trespasses, by canceling the record of debt that stood against us with its legal demands. This he set aside, nailing it to the cross."
Reflection: Reflect on a time when you felt spiritually dead. How did God bring you to life in Christ, and how can you celebrate this transformation today?
Day 3: The Dynamic Work of the Holy Spirit
Presently, we are being saved through the ongoing work of the Holy Spirit. This involves God actively sustaining our faith and keeping us from falling away, highlighting the dynamic nature of our salvation. [03:16]
2 Corinthians 4:16-18 (ESV): "So we do not lose heart. Though our outer self is wasting away, our inner self is being renewed day by day. For this light momentary affliction is preparing for us an eternal weight of glory beyond all comparison, as we look not to the things that are seen but to the things that are unseen. For the things that are seen are transient, but the things that are unseen are eternal."
Reflection: Identify an area in your life where you need the Holy Spirit's sustaining power. How can you invite Him to work in that area today?
Day 4: Anticipating Our Future Inheritance
Our future salvation is the full realization of our inheritance in Christ. It is an imperishable and unfading hope that will be revealed in the last time, emphasizing the eternal nature of God's promise. [07:26]
1 Peter 1:3-5 (ESV): "Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! According to his great mercy, he has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, to an inheritance that is imperishable, undefiled, and unfading, kept in heaven for you, who by God's power are being guarded through faith for a salvation ready to be revealed in the last time."
Reflection: What does your future inheritance in Christ mean to you personally? How can this hope influence your actions and decisions today?
Day 5: Sealed and Secure in Christ
Our security in salvation is assured by our union with Christ and the sealing of the Holy Spirit. This guarantees that we are kept safe for the day of redemption, underscoring the unbreakable nature of our salvation. [09:24]
Ephesians 4:30 (ESV): "And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption."
Reflection: In what ways do you find assurance in your union with Christ? How can you live confidently in this security today, knowing you are sealed by the Holy Spirit?
Sermon Summary
In our exploration of Ephesians 2:4-7, we delve into the profound implications of the past, present, and future aspects of salvation. The passage begins with the rich mercy of God, who, out of His great love, made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in our trespasses. This act of making us alive, raising us up, and seating us with Christ in the heavenly places is a past event with ongoing and future implications. Salvation is not a one-time event but a continuous process that encompasses our past, present, and future.
The past aspect of salvation is the decisive act of God making us alive in Christ. This is a completed action, signifying that we have been rescued from spiritual death. However, salvation is also a present reality. As we live our lives, we are being saved daily by the ongoing work of the Holy Spirit, who sustains our faith and keeps us from falling away. This present salvation is an active process where God continually works in us to preserve our faith.
Looking to the future, salvation is something we anticipate. There is an aspect of salvation that is yet to be fully realized, a future inheritance that is imperishable and kept in heaven for us. This future salvation will be revealed in the last time, culminating in the full experience of God's grace and kindness.
Our security in this salvation is rooted in our union with Christ. Just as Christ is seated at the right hand of God, never to be unseated, we too are secure in Him. We are sealed with the Holy Spirit, who is the guarantee of our inheritance. This sealing ensures that we are kept safe for the day of redemption, highlighting the unbreakable nature of our salvation in Christ.

But God, being rich in mercy because of the great love with which he loved us, even when we were dead in our trespasses, made us alive, another past tense, together with Christ. By grace, you have been saved, and he raised us up with him and seated us with him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus. [00:29:35]
We have been saved. Now I want to linger here for just a moment because this word saved is a big word including lots of things, some of which are future, some of which are past, some of which are present. And so much confusion is caused by failing to realize how flexible and big and inclusive this word is in the Apostle Paul and indeed throughout the New Testament. [01:49:36]
Salvation has happened in the past, but it is something that is an ongoing activity of God. He is saving us right now as I'm talking to you. I am being saved. The Holy Spirit is doing something in me to keep me from cursing Jesus and leaving the faith. He's holding on to me. [03:01:21]
We have already been made alive. We have already been raised up with Jesus. We have been seated with him in the heavenly places. We are in Christ Jesus. There's a union with Christ that has happened to us in this giving of life that puts us in the very same place Jesus is in, namely raised up with him. [04:05:20]
Think about a disease. You're just about to die of a horrible disease. You're five minutes away from death. The doctor realizes there is one medicine that could pull you back from the brink, and he gives you that super powerful dose. And just as your heart was stopping, he makes you alive. [04:52:56]
Or you could think of drowning. They see you flailing about in the water. They get in a lifeboat, come to you. By the time they get to you, you're gone. You're at the bottom. They reach down, they find you. Your heart is not beating. They do quick CPR. You gasp, you breathe, you're alive. [05:59:19]
Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. According to his great mercy, he has caused us to be born again. Past, there's the life that's made alive, born again, made alive. That's Ephesians 2:5, made alive to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead. [06:57:39]
Who by God's power are being guarded through faith, so there's present ongoing protection. God is guarding us, awakening and keeping our faith day in and day out for a salvation ready to be revealed in the last time. That's future. You see it all there, so there's past, present, future salvation. [07:32:52]
In Christ, we are as secure as Jesus is, right? He has been raised up. He's never going to die again. He has been seated at the right hand of God. He's never going to be unseated from that throne ever for all eternity. If we are in him, we're as secure as Jesus is. [08:03:36]
He put us in Christ and then he sealed us in Christ and he gave us a guarantee, or as it says in chapter 4 verse 30, do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption, the final future experience of salvation. You are sealed for it. [09:16:56]
By grace, you have been saved is a past that in God's way of reckoning has secured an ongoing act of the Holy Spirit to keep us saved and to preserve for us a security that is in Christ Jesus as safe as he is safe and will one day experience this future. [09:41:59]
Salvation includes all the past work of God, all the present work of God, and all the future work of God, and he does it all to keep us safe for his kindness forever in Jesus. [10:21:92]
