Understanding Spiritual Warfare: Satan's Limitations and Our Defense
Devotional
Day 1: God's Supreme Knowledge and Our Security
God alone possesses the divine attributes of omniscience, omnipresence, and omnipotence, which means He knows all things, is present everywhere, and holds all power. In contrast, Satan, as a created being, lacks these attributes and cannot read our minds. This understanding reassures believers of God's supreme power and our security in Him. Knowing that Satan cannot access our thoughts provides comfort, as it emphasizes the unique and intimate relationship we have with God, who knows us completely and loves us unconditionally. [12:02]
"For the eyes of the Lord run to and fro throughout the whole earth, to give strong support to those whose heart is blameless toward him." (2 Chronicles 16:9 ESV)
Reflection: In what ways can you find comfort in knowing that God, who knows your every thought, is always present and powerful in your life?
Day 2: Scripture as Our Defense
The power of Scripture is evident in the way Jesus used it to resist temptation. By immersing ourselves in the Word of God, we equip ourselves to combat the enemy's schemes effectively. Scripture serves as both a defensive and offensive tool in spiritual warfare, providing guidance, wisdom, and strength. As believers, we are encouraged to study and internalize Scripture, allowing it to shape our thoughts and actions, and to use it as a weapon against the temptations and deceptions we face. [18:03]
"For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart." (Hebrews 4:12 ESV)
Reflection: How can you incorporate more Scripture into your daily routine to strengthen your spiritual defenses against temptation?
Day 3: Empowered by the Holy Spirit
The Holy Spirit empowers believers to stand firm in spiritual battles, providing strength and guidance to resist temptation. Greater is He who is in us than he who is in the world, assuring us of victory through Christ. The Holy Spirit's presence in our lives is a source of comfort and power, enabling us to live in accordance with God's will and to overcome the challenges we face. By relying on the Holy Spirit, we can navigate the complexities of life with confidence and resilience. [17:07]
"But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth." (Acts 1:8 ESV)
Reflection: In what areas of your life do you need to rely more on the Holy Spirit's power and guidance today?
Day 4: Equipped with the Armor of God
Ephesians 6 describes the spiritual armor available to believers, equipping us to withstand the enemy's attacks and stand firm in our faith. This armor includes both defensive and offensive tools, such as the breastplate of righteousness and the sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of God. By putting on the full armor of God, we are prepared to face spiritual opposition and to live victoriously in Christ. This preparation involves a conscious and daily commitment to align ourselves with God's truth and righteousness. [19:37]
"Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand firm." (Ephesians 6:13 ESV)
Reflection: Which piece of the armor of God do you feel you need to strengthen in your life, and how can you begin to do so today?
Day 5: The Power of Prayer
Prayer is a powerful weapon in spiritual warfare, aligning us with God's will and strengthening our resolve to resist the devil. Through prayer, we communicate with God, seek His guidance, and draw on His strength to overcome the challenges we face. By combining prayer with the Word of God, we are equipped to stand firm against the enemy and to live in accordance with God's purposes. Prayer is not only a means of seeking help but also a way of deepening our relationship with God and growing in spiritual maturity. [21:01]
"Pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you." (1 Thessalonians 5:17-18 ESV)
Reflection: How can you make prayer a more integral part of your daily life, and what specific steps can you take to deepen your prayer life today?
Sermon Summary
In today's discussion, we explored the intriguing question of whether Satan can read our minds, a concern raised by a listener from Brazil. This question opens up a broader conversation about the nature of spiritual warfare and the attributes of God versus those of Satan. The Bible clearly presents God as omniscient, omnipresent, and omnipotent, while Satan, a created being, lacks these divine attributes. This means that Satan cannot read our minds, which is a comforting thought for believers. However, Satan is adept at observing human behavior and exploiting our weaknesses, often using the same old tricks: the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life.
We examined the temptation of Jesus as a model for how to resist Satan's schemes. Jesus used the Word of God as His primary weapon, demonstrating the power of Scripture in spiritual battles. This same power is available to us through the Holy Spirit, who empowers and guides us. We are reminded that we are in a real spiritual battle, and we must equip ourselves with the armor of God as described in Ephesians 6. This includes both defensive and offensive tools, such as the breastplate of righteousness and the sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of God.
Furthermore, we discussed the importance of prayer as a powerful weapon in our spiritual arsenal. Prayer, combined with the Word of God, enables us to stand firm against the enemy. We are encouraged to submit to God and resist the devil, with the promise that he will flee from us. This spiritual resilience is crucial as we navigate the challenges of life and the temptations that come our way.
In conclusion, while Satan cannot read our minds, he is a keen observer of human nature. Our defense lies in the power of the Holy Spirit, the truth of Scripture, and the practice of prayer. By putting on the full armor of God, we can stand firm in the face of spiritual opposition and live victoriously in Christ.

Sermon Clips
It is important to understand that only God in the scriptures is presented as omniscient, omnipresent, and omnipotent. God alone has these characteristics, and the enemy, the adversary of God, spoken of in the scriptures as the devil, sometimes referred to as Satan, all these other spiritual hosts of wickedness in heavenly places, in spiritual places, the devil and all of these entities, they are not the equal opposite of God. [00:11:56]
The scriptures nowhere show that Satan knows our thoughts, which is great news. So, if Satan doesn't know my thoughts, then how is it that he is so good at ensnaring us? As Renin asks in this question, does he base his evil attacks by watching our attitudes only? I ask this because if that is so, how can I deal with this spiritual battle that we are in the midst of? [00:13:08]
I would say after eons of observing and testing human beings, testing people, he knows human beings really, really well. He knows how to trip us up, and he actually doesn't have a lot of tricks in his bag, if you could say. He basically uses, as I believe it's Peter talks about, three primary things: the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life. [00:13:48]
The same power that Jesus used in this battle with the enemy is available to us. We have the Spirit of God in us, empowering us. John says in 1 John chapter 4 verse 4, "He who is in you is greater than he who is in the world." So if you are a Christian, Jesus promised that he would not leave us without a helper, without a comforter. [00:17:07]
We have the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God, and just as Jesus defeated the enemy with the word of God, we have that available to us. Three times Jesus is tempted, and three times he combats the temptation and combats the enemy who's bringing the temptation with the word of God. It is written, it is written, it is written. [00:18:03]
We need to recognize that we are in a very real spiritual battle. There is a spiritual battle, and there are spiritual entities, spiritual hosts of wickedness in heavenly places, the scriptures say, that are using an old King James where they are buffeting us, and we should prepare to stand in this battle. [00:18:26]
Therefore, take up the whole armor of God so that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand. Stand therefore, Paul goes on to say, and now he goes into talking about the armaments that we have as those who are equipped and enabled by the Spirit of God. [00:19:37]
We have the armor that is spoken of in this passage, offensive and defensive. The defensive: the breastplate of righteousness, shod our feet with preparation, the gospel of peace, the belt of truth, the helmet of salvation, and so forth. There's some great teaching on this, Pastor David's teaching on Enduring Word, in audio and also in print. [00:20:51]
Paul makes very clear that the weapons of our warfare, the sword of the Spirit, and the prayer in this passage, they are not carnal, but they are mighty in God for the tearing down of strongholds. This is found in Paul's letter to the Corinthians. I don't think I put this into my notes, but the weapons of our warfare, they are not carnal, but they're mighty in God. [00:21:01]
James, the brother of the Lord, he says in James chapter 4 verse 7, "Therefore submit yourself to God, resist the devil, and he will flee from you." That's a great promise. As we submit to God, resist the enemy, the enemy will flee from us. So I would encourage you, if you want some more information about this, definitely look into Pastor David's teaching. [00:22:15]
The prophetic voices are always calling people to repentance, and the sued saying false prophets are always kind of lulling people into a laxadaisical, you know, laziness. So, great question, Paulie. Okay, another question, Hosea, why is the book of Daniel not included in the prophets section of the Hebrew Bible but instead in the writings section? [00:27:24]
I would say that I agree with David on this, that all of the saints and even those who are martyrs in the tribulation, they have a place in this period called the millennial reign of Christ. I hold to a pre-millennial view of the second coming of Christ, and I do believe that Jesus will return bodily one day and establish his kingdom here on earth. [00:50:10]
