Understanding Prayer, Spiritual Gifts, and Spiritual Warfare

Summary

In our exploration of prayer, spiritual gifts, and the supernatural, we delve into the profound dynamics of faith and the workings of the Holy Spirit. Prayer is not merely a mechanical act but a spiritual engagement that requires sensitivity to the Holy Spirit's guidance. While some may believe that a single prayer demonstrates great faith, the Bible encourages persistent prayer until the Spirit indicates otherwise. This sensitivity to the Spirit's leading is crucial in discerning when to continue in prayer and when to rest in God's peace.

Regarding spiritual gifts, particularly the gift of healing, it is essential to maintain a balanced perspective. The Apostle Paul teaches that gifts are given to the church as a whole, not for individual glory but for the edification of the body of Christ. Our focus should be on manifesting God's glory through our service, rather than seeking specific gifts for personal recognition.

In the realm of faith healing, the role of Christian doctors and the church is to discern the Spirit's leading. Faith healing is not a mechanical process but a spiritual one, requiring a prayer of faith that is divinely assured. This prayer is not common, and its absence should not lead to distress or doubt in God's promises.

The supernatural, often misunderstood, is not merely the unexplained but the divine intervention that transcends natural laws. It is crucial to recognize God's hand in both the natural and supernatural, avoiding the "God of the gaps" mentality that limits His presence to the unexplainable.

Finally, the discussion on demon possession highlights the need for discernment and caution. While dramatic phenomena can distract from the devil's subtle attacks, it is vital to address both aspects of spiritual warfare. Christians must remain vigilant, discerning the Spirit's guidance in all matters, and recognizing the power of Christ in overcoming evil.

Day 1: Sensitivity in Prayer
Prayer is a dynamic interaction with God that requires a deep sensitivity to the Holy Spirit's guidance. It is not merely a mechanical act but a spiritual engagement that calls for discernment. While persistence in prayer is encouraged, there are moments when the Holy Spirit grants peace, signaling that it is time to rest in God's will. This discernment is crucial for a mature prayer life, as it helps believers understand when to continue in prayer and when to trust in God's timing and plan. [02:09]

"And this is my prayer: that your love may abound more and more in knowledge and depth of insight, so that you may be able to discern what is best and may be pure and blameless for the day of Christ." (Philippians 1:9-10, ESV)

Reflection: Is there a specific situation in your life where you feel uncertain about whether to continue praying or to rest in God's peace? How can you seek the Holy Spirit's guidance in this matter today?

Day 2: Serving Through Spiritual Gifts
Spiritual gifts are bestowed upon believers for the edification of the church, not for personal glory. The Apostle Paul emphasizes that these gifts are meant to build up the body of Christ, and our focus should be on manifesting God's glory through our service. It is important to maintain a balanced perspective, seeking to serve God and others with our unique gifts rather than pursuing specific gifts for personal recognition. This approach fosters unity and strengthens the church community. [06:43]

"To each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good. For to one is given through the Spirit the utterance of wisdom, and to another the utterance of knowledge according to the same Spirit." (1 Corinthians 12:7-8, ESV)

Reflection: What unique spiritual gift do you believe God has given you? How can you use this gift to serve and edify your church community this week?

Day 3: Faith Healing and Assurance
Faith healing is a spiritual process that requires a divinely assured prayer of faith. This type of prayer is not common, and its absence should not lead to doubt in God's promises. Christian doctors and the church play a crucial role in discerning the Spirit's leading in matters of healing. It is important to understand that faith healing is not a mechanical process but one that involves deep spiritual engagement and trust in God's will. [12:20]

"Is anyone among you sick? Let them call the elders of the church to pray over them and anoint them with oil in the name of the Lord. And the prayer offered in faith will make the sick person well; the Lord will raise them up." (James 5:14-15, ESV)

Reflection: Is there someone in your life who is in need of healing? How can you support them through prayer and discernment of the Spirit's leading today?

Day 4: Recognizing the Supernatural
The supernatural is not merely the unexplained but the divine intervention that transcends natural laws. It is crucial to recognize God's hand in both the natural and supernatural, avoiding the "God of the gaps" mentality that limits His presence to the unexplainable. By acknowledging God's work in all aspects of life, believers can develop a deeper appreciation for His power and presence in both ordinary and extraordinary circumstances. [15:32]

"For by him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things were created through him and for him." (Colossians 1:16, ESV)

Reflection: How can you become more aware of God's presence in both the natural and supernatural aspects of your life? What steps can you take to acknowledge His work in everyday situations?

Day 5: Vigilance in Spiritual Warfare
Addressing both dramatic phenomena and subtle attacks of the devil is crucial in spiritual warfare. Christians must remain vigilant, discerning the Spirit's guidance, and recognizing the power of Christ in overcoming evil. It is important to be aware of the devil's tactics, which can range from overt manifestations to more subtle influences. By relying on the Holy Spirit and the power of Christ, believers can effectively engage in spiritual warfare and stand firm against the enemy's schemes. [22:09]

"Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his might. Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil." (Ephesians 6:10-11, ESV)

Reflection: Are there areas in your life where you feel spiritually vulnerable? How can you equip yourself with the armor of God to stand firm against the enemy's attacks today?

Quotes

I think that's a a very great fallacy because u in the Bible itself you find there are even exhortations to continue in prayer Isaiah tells us not to give God any rest rest nor peace but to persist, and there are our Lord's own remarks about the importunity of the Widow and others. [00:01:45]

It seems to me therefore that the important thing is that we should always uh pray in faith not a sort of wild cry in the dark or crying out to whatever Gods may be not nothing frantic or desperate uh the prayer of faith means in a sense a quiet spirit yet there can be an urgency. [00:02:16]

I would say that one is to go on praying until one is given some kind of indication by the spirit of God that we're not to continue. I've never forgotten a thing I once read I think it was General kitchen of the Salvation Army uh our friend here the colel may remember the incident better than I do. [00:02:39]

I believe that we should be much more sensitive than we are and less mechanical to the whole operation of the spirit in this matter of prayer the spirit maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be be uttered and so on the spirit should be very active in prayer. [00:04:18]

The gifts are given not so much to individuals as to the church which is the body of Christ, hence his analogy in the 12th chapter and is ridiculing the idea of regarding these as special to ourselves and becoming individualistic about them and pointing out how all these belong to the functioning of the entire body. [00:06:17]

We should all glory in the fact that we are members of the body of Christ that we should seek to serve him and to manifest his glory and the power of the spirit in our various gifts and Ministries that are given to us remember wisdom and others come in and all these matters and the gift of faith. [00:06:45]

Faith healing is not something mechanical that you always do. I think I've partly suggested the answer to this question in some remarks I made in one of the meetings by now I can't remember which of them uh but when I when I when I suggested this that in all this matter there is it seems to me a leading. [00:09:06]

The prayer of faith which as I tried to indicate is not which does doesn't mean simply that you believe the scriptures and that you therefore believe that if you pray and anoint well that this person is going to be healed now this as I tried to show was a very definite prayer which is given so that there is a certainty about it. [00:11:54]

With the advance and the growth of knowledge things which were once regarded as Supernatural are now found not to be Supernatural. We know that primitive peoples tend to invoke the Supernatural and the miraculous where it is unnecessary and we must be very careful in this respect so that we mustn't only Define this in terms of something that we cannot explain. [00:13:57]

The Bible seems to me to make it clear that there are these actions of God we were discussing this partly in the discussion session last night uh and it isn't just a question of invoking God invoking God to cover our ignorance or our lack of knowledge it is that we are aware of an action which is amazing and stupendous. [00:15:37]

May it not be that dramatic phenomena like Devil possession are the devil's own way of distracting our attention from his main but much more subtle attack. Yes that's very typical if I miss s and I won't say of whom uh but it is very typical uh I'm almost enough of a higher critic to say who sponsored that question originally. [00:20:10]

We must take a balanced view of these things and beware of this false antithesis there's either all which doesn't apply here at all the devil does it in both ways in all ways we are not ignorant of his devices and I feel that attention needs to be called today in this country particularly to this aspect of which we haven't seen much in the past.
