Understanding God's Nature: Aseity, Simplicity, and Immutability
Summary
In our time together, we explored three profound truths about God: His self-existence, divine simplicity, and immutability. These truths, though they may initially seem abstract, are foundational to understanding the beauty of God's glory and the grace of the gospel. God's self-existence, or aseity, means that He is not dependent on anything or anyone for His existence. He simply is. This is evident in the divine name revealed to Moses in Exodus 3, "I am who I am." Unlike the gods of paganism or the philosophical constructs of thinkers like Aristotle, who imagined gods dependent on creation, the God of the Bible is self-sufficient and full of life in Himself. This self-existence is the source of His grace, as He creates and loves not out of need but out of an overflow of His abundant life and goodness.
Divine simplicity further emphasizes that God is not composed of parts or dependent on any external qualities. He is not a compound being but is wholly and entirely love, goodness, and truth. This means that God's attributes are not separate from His essence; He is love, He is goodness. This understanding prevents us from viewing God's attributes as conflicting or separate moods. For instance, God's wrath is not opposed to His love but is an expression of His passionate commitment to goodness and justice.
Finally, God's immutability assures us that He does not change or evolve. He is eternally and faithfully Himself, which means His love and grace are constant and reliable. This constancy is a source of comfort for believers, as it assures us that God's promises and character are unchanging. The self-existent, simple, and immutable nature of God is the foundation of the gospel of grace, allowing us to trust in His love and righteousness, which are not dependent on our actions or worthiness.
Key Takeaways:
- God's Self-Existence: God's aseity means He is self-sufficient and independent, existing without need or dependency on creation. This truth highlights the grace of God, as He creates and loves out of an overflow of His abundant life, not out of necessity. This understanding challenges us to see God's love as proactive and creative, not reactive. [02:11]
- Divine Simplicity: God is not composed of parts or dependent on external qualities. He is wholly love, goodness, and truth. This means His attributes are not in conflict but are expressions of His singular essence. Understanding divine simplicity helps us see God's wrath as an expression of His love and commitment to justice. [23:05]
- God's Immutability: God does not change or evolve; He is eternally and faithfully Himself. This constancy assures us of His unchanging love and grace, providing a foundation for our trust and hope. God's immutability means His promises and character are reliable, offering comfort to believers. [29:11]
- The Gospel of Grace: The self-existent, simple, and immutable nature of God is the foundation of the gospel of grace. God's love is not dependent on our worthiness but is a creative force that transforms us. This understanding frees us from the burden of trying to earn God's love and allows us to rest in His grace. [20:21]
- Living in Light of God's Nature: Understanding God's nature as self-existent, simple, and immutable calls us to live proactively in love, reflecting His character. As God is proactive in His love, so should we be in our relationships and service, embodying the active nature of true religion. [22:39]

Day 1: God's Self-Existence and Overflowing Love
God's self-existence, or aseity, signifies that He is entirely self-sufficient and independent, existing without any need or dependency on creation. This profound truth highlights the grace of God, as He creates and loves not out of necessity but from an overflow of His abundant life and goodness. Unlike the gods of paganism or philosophical constructs that depend on creation, the God of the Bible is self-sufficient and full of life in Himself. This understanding challenges us to see God's love as proactive and creative, not reactive, inviting us to trust in His grace and love that are freely given. [02:11]
"For as the Father has life in himself, so he has granted the Son also to have life in himself." (John 5:26, ESV)
Reflection: Consider how God's self-existence challenges your understanding of love. How can you reflect His proactive love in your relationships today?
Day 2: The Unity of God's Attributes
Divine simplicity emphasizes that God is not composed of parts or dependent on any external qualities. He is wholly and entirely love, goodness, and truth. This means that God's attributes are not separate from His essence; He is love, He is goodness. Understanding divine simplicity helps us see God's wrath as an expression of His love and commitment to justice, rather than a conflicting mood. This understanding invites us to trust in the unity and harmony of God's character, knowing that His actions are always consistent with His nature. [23:05]
"Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow due to change." (James 1:17, ESV)
Reflection: Reflect on a time when you viewed God's attributes as conflicting. How does understanding divine simplicity change your perspective on God's character?
Day 3: The Comfort of God's Immutability
God's immutability assures us that He does not change or evolve; He is eternally and faithfully Himself. This constancy is a source of comfort for believers, as it assures us that God's promises and character are unchanging. His love and grace are constant and reliable, providing a foundation for our trust and hope. In a world that is constantly changing, God's immutability offers a steadfast anchor for our faith, reminding us that His love and righteousness are not dependent on our actions or worthiness. [29:11]
"Of old you laid the foundation of the earth, and the heavens are the work of your hands. They will perish, but you will remain; they will all wear out like a garment. You will change them like a robe, and they will pass away, but you are the same, and your years have no end." (Psalm 102:25-27, ESV)
Reflection: In what areas of your life do you need to be reminded of God's unchanging nature? How can this assurance bring you comfort today?
Day 4: The Foundation of the Gospel of Grace
The self-existent, simple, and immutable nature of God is the foundation of the gospel of grace. God's love is not dependent on our worthiness but is a creative force that transforms us. This understanding frees us from the burden of trying to earn God's love and allows us to rest in His grace. The gospel invites us to embrace this grace, knowing that it is a gift freely given, not something we must strive to achieve. This truth encourages us to live in the freedom and joy of being loved unconditionally by God. [20:21]
"But God, being rich in mercy, because of the great love with which he loved us, even when we were dead in our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ—by grace you have been saved." (Ephesians 2:4-5, ESV)
Reflection: How does understanding God's grace as a creative force change your approach to your relationship with Him? What steps can you take to rest in His grace today?
Day 5: Living Proactively in Light of God's Nature
Understanding God's nature as self-existent, simple, and immutable calls us to live proactively in love, reflecting His character. As God is proactive in His love, so should we be in our relationships and service, embodying the active nature of true religion. This understanding challenges us to move beyond passive faith and engage actively in loving others, serving our communities, and living out the gospel in tangible ways. By reflecting God's proactive love, we become conduits of His grace and truth in the world. [22:39]
"Let us not love in word or talk but in deed and in truth." (1 John 3:18, ESV)
Reflection: Identify one specific way you can proactively demonstrate God's love to someone in your life today. What steps will you take to put this into action?
Quotes
These truths uphold the very beauty of God's glory and holiness and that the gospel of grace flows from these truths about God. These truths about God and the graciousness of the gospel stand together and eat without these truths you will not marvel deeply at God you will not know just how gracious he is and you will not trust him so eagerly. [00:01:20]
God does not receive his name, his identity, or his existence from anyone or anything else. He does not depend on anything to be who he is. He simply and eternally is. This is why in John 1 John introduces the word who is God and immediately writes in him was life. [00:03:01]
God is so overflowing li super abundantly full of life in himself but he delighted to spread his goodness because of God's blessed she we use that word again, asiye t we can know the very creation is a work of grace grace then is not merely his kindness to sinners before even there was sin God brought his creation into being out of grace. [00:12:30]
With the self-existent God love is not a reaction God's love is proactive, creative he gives life and being as a free gift because his very life being and goodness is yeasty spreading out that there might be more that is truly good overflowing it's why in Scripture the glory of God is so often spoken of as a radiant light shining outwards. [00:13:17]
God is not composed of parts or dependent on any external qualities. He is not a compound being but is wholly and entirely love, goodness, and truth. This means that God's attributes are not separate from His essence; He is love, He is goodness. This understanding prevents us from viewing God's attributes as conflicting or separate moods. [00:23:05]
God is simple he has no parts but you may say hang on what about the Trinity hey God is Father Son and spirit is that not three parts to God a very importantly no God does not have three things called Father Son and spirit God is Father Son and spirit. [00:26:40]
God does not evolve or improve having fullness of being how could he he isn't fickle he isn't in some mood he might move on from he doesn't become something else God is eternally and faithfully and gloriously himself and so it's not as if God could ever have become father son and spirit in us. [00:29:11]
The self-existent simple immutable nature of God means here is the only God who is not a king who is inherently loving outgoing overflowing lis abundant here is the only God who could be inclined to be gracious here is the God who is the same yesterday today and forever you know we may be lacking. [00:32:53]
Unlike the idols he needs nothing he acts with his own reliable inherent graciousness he has no secret needy agenda and this means we can turn always with confidence to him and we can turn to him with wonder at his eternal fullness and magnificence he is day after day a strong tower. [00:33:36]
Jesus Christ is the same yesterday today and forever and therefore our righteousness in him is the same yesterday and today and forever our comfort and the graciousness of the gospel is built on these characters of God all these perfections of God friends only with this God can we fill needy people. [00:36:26]
Father your self-existent blessedness your complete lack of dependence on us or on anything else makes us bow our hearts and our minds in wonder and fills us with comfort blessed be your name from everlasting to everlasting amen. [00:37:09]
God's self existence is the only foundation on which a true gospel of grace can be built because it means with this God he's not hungrily looking to find some goodness in us to satisfy himself he's not looking for some loveliness he desperately needs he does not love us because of any loveliness in us no he creates it.
