In this third part of our “Summerology” series, we explored the foundational truths about God—who He is, how He reveals Himself, and why our understanding of Him shapes every aspect of our lives. We began by recognizing that many of us carry inherited beliefs and assumptions about God that need to be challenged and, if necessary, dethroned. Just as it’s difficult to describe the taste of an orange to someone who’s never had one, so too is it challenging to describe God, who is utterly unique and beyond comparison. Yet, God has graciously revealed Himself, and our task is to develop language that describes—not defines—His nature.
We discussed how our theology (what we believe about God) directly impacts our doxology (how we worship and live). Worship is not confined to singing or sacred spaces; it encompasses every part of our lives—how we parent, work, and interact with others. A high view of God leads to a high view of life, enabling us to trust Him in suffering, pray boldly, and make wise decisions.
We examined the danger of cognitive bias and idolatry—how easy it is to build a “God” in our own image, shaped by our preferences and experiences. True worship requires us to reach for the God who has revealed Himself, not the one we imagine. We looked at God’s unique attributes: He is eternal, immutable, sovereign, omnipresent, omniscient, self-sufficient, and holy. These qualities set Him apart from all creation.
Central to our faith is the revelation of God as one, yet revealed in three persons: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Through a systematic approach, we saw that Jesus is not merely a good man or a created being, but truly God—receiving worship, forgiving sins, and possessing divine authority. The triune nature of God is not a mathematical puzzle to solve, but a profound mystery that reveals God’s eternal love and fellowship, into which we are invited.
Understanding God rightly transforms our worship, our morality, and our sense of belonging. We are not called to endless striving or religious treadmill, but to enter into the joy and fellowship of the God who has always existed in perfect love. The Apostles’ Creed, recited by believers through the ages, gives us language to confess these essential truths and unite us with the global church. As we grow in our understanding, may our hearts and lives reflect the beauty and majesty of the God we serve.
Isaiah 46:5, 9 (ESV) — > “To whom will you liken me and make me equal, and compare me, that we may be alike? … for I am God, and there is no other; I am God, and there is none like me.”
Deuteronomy 6:4 (ESV) — > “Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God, the LORD is one.”
John 1:1-3, 14 (ESV) — > “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things were made through him, and without him was not any thing made that was made. … And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth.”
