Understanding God as Our Loving Father
Summary
In this session of "40 Days of Prayer," we delve into the profound and transformative understanding of God as our Father. When Jesus taught His disciples to pray, He began with the words "Our Father," a revolutionary concept that shattered the traditional views of God as a distant, formidable force. In the Old Testament, God was rarely referred to as Father, and never in personal prayer. Jesus, however, emphasized this relationship over 150 times, urging us to see God not just as a creator or provider, but as a loving, personal Father—our Abba, our Daddy.
This understanding can be challenging for those who have had difficult relationships with their earthly fathers. Negative experiences can distort our perception of God, making it hard to trust Him. However, it's crucial to replace these misconceptions with the truth of who God is. When we grasp the true nature of God, our confidence in prayer grows, and our love for Him deepens, transforming our prayer life.
God is a caring Father, loving us more deeply than any earthly parent could. His love is unwavering, unaffected by our failures or sins. He is also a consistent Father, unchanging in His love and promises. Unlike human fathers who may be unpredictable, God is always reliable and faithful.
Moreover, God is a close Father, never distant or unavailable. He promises to be with us always, attentive to every detail of our lives. His thoughts about us are countless, like the grains of sand on a beach, and He is always ready to meet our needs and comfort us in our hurts.
Finally, God is a competent Father, capable of handling any problem we bring to Him. Nothing is impossible for Him, and He can do far more than we can ask or imagine. This understanding of God as caring, consistent, close, and competent allows us to pray with confidence, knowing we are speaking to a loving Father who desires the best for us.

Quotes
When the disciples asked Jesus to teach them how to pray, the very first words he spoke were the last words they expected to hear. He said, "Our Father." With just those two words, Jesus broke through all their stereotypes about God. Did you know that in all of the Old Testament, for thousands of years, the word "father" is used for God only about a handful of times, and it is never used in personal prayer? [00:01:05]
Jesus challenged all of that, and in fact, Jesus referred to God as Father over 150 times. He really wanted us to get this message. He wanted us to know that God is not simply a power; He's a person. God is not simply a force; He's our Father. Actually, the New Testament word for Father is the word "Abba." [00:02:02]
It's time for you to trade all your previous misconceptions and myths that you may have had about God for the truth about who God really is and what He's really like. Because when you understand what God is really like, you understand the kind of Father your Heavenly Father is. When you truly know Him, you're gonna feel more confident in prayer. [00:03:51]
God loves you more deeply and more compassionately than any earthly father could ever love a child because He's perfect. God loves you more tenderly and more faithfully than any earthly mother is capable of loving her child. In Isaiah 49, God says, "Though she may forget, I will not forget you." That's God talking about you. [00:05:03]
Nothing can stop God from loving you—not your failures, not your attitudes, not your sins, not your stubbornness, not your mistakes, not your failings. Nothing can stop God from loving you. The Bible says this: "For I'm convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers..." [00:05:46]
God is a consistent Father. God is consistently loving, consistently caring, consistently compassionate. He's consistently dependable. He's consistently reliable. Now, the Bible says this: "There is nothing deceitful in God, nothing two-faced, nothing fickle." In other words, God is always faithful. He's always true. He's always available. [00:10:02]
God says, "I, the Lord, do not change." He's not just a caring Father; He's a consistent Father. That means that even if you turn your back on God, He's not gonna turn His back on you. God's love for you is not based on your performance; it's based entirely on His character, and God's character never changes. [00:10:29]
God promises to always stay by your side. In Hebrews 13:5, He says, "I will not in any way fail you nor give you up nor leave you without support. I will not, I will not, I will not in any degree leave you helpless nor forsake you nor let you down or relax my hold on you." [00:13:27]
God never stops thinking about you. There is no moment, no second of your life before He made you, He thought about you. You were always on His mind. That's why we pray confidently. The psalmist wrote, "How precious are your thoughts about me, O God. They cannot be numbered. I cannot even count them; they outnumber the grains of sand." [00:14:08]
God is a competent Father. That means God can handle any problem you bring Him. There's no challenge beyond His ability. There's no question above His wisdom. There's no need that's gonna exhaust His resources. The Bible says this: "Nothing is impossible for God." But in your life, have you acted like it was impossible for God to do? [00:19:06]
God is able to do far more than we would ever dare to ask or even dream of, infinitely beyond our highest prayers, our desires, our thoughts, or our hopes. Now think about this: the vastness of this ocean behind me. I'm sitting here on the California coastline. The Pacific Ocean goes all the way over to Asia. [00:19:28]
The reason we are confident in prayer is four things: God is a caring Father. There's never been a time that God did not care about every detail of your life. Two, He's a consistent Father. He has never changed in His love. He's not moody or fickle. He is an unchangeable Father. He is a close Father. [00:21:11]
