Understanding Faith: Key Questions and Biblical Insights
Devotional
Day 1: The Unique Conditions of Early Creation
In the early days of humanity, the genetic material was largely uncorrupted, allowing for unions between siblings without the risks we associate with them today. This understanding helps us grasp the unique conditions of early creation and God's unfolding plan for humanity. Adam and Eve had many sons and daughters, and Cain married one of his sisters. This highlights the distinctiveness of the early human experience and God's sovereign design in populating the earth. Recognizing these unique conditions can deepen our appreciation for the biblical narrative and God's creative work. [03:13]
Genesis 5:4-5 (ESV): "The days of Adam after he fathered Seth were 800 years; and he had other sons and daughters. Thus all the days that Adam lived were 930 years, and he died."
Reflection: How does understanding the unique conditions of early creation affect your view of God's plan for humanity today?
Day 2: Integrity in Leadership
Being "above reproach" as a leader in the church involves both character and societal perception. While societal norms may shift, the core character traits required of leaders remain unchanged, emphasizing integrity and a good testimony both within and outside the church. This calls for a balance between maintaining biblical standards and understanding cultural contexts. Leaders are called to embody integrity, humility, and a steadfast commitment to God's truth, regardless of changing societal values. [10:13]
1 Timothy 3:2-3 (ESV): "Therefore an overseer must be above reproach, the husband of one wife, sober-minded, self-controlled, respectable, hospitable, able to teach, not a drunkard, not violent but gentle, not quarrelsome, not a lover of money."
Reflection: In what ways can you strive to be above reproach in your own life, both in character and in how you are perceived by others?
Day 3: Recognizing God's Sovereignty
Angels are ministering spirits sent by God to aid believers, but they are not under human command. This understanding calls for a recognition of God's sovereignty and the proper role of angels in the divine order, serving God's purposes rather than human directives. While they work for our benefit, it is God who directs them, not us. This perspective encourages believers to trust in God's ultimate authority and His divine orchestration of all things. [12:08]
Hebrews 1:14 (ESV): "Are they not all ministering spirits sent out to serve for the sake of those who are to inherit salvation?"
Reflection: How can you cultivate a deeper trust in God's sovereignty, especially in areas where you desire control?
Day 4: Nurturing a Genuine Relationship with God
Engaging children with the gospel requires simplicity, love, and resources that speak to their level of understanding. It's about nurturing a genuine relationship with God rather than imposing a set of rules, fostering a lifelong journey of faith. Using resources like the "Jesus Storybook Bible" by Sally Lloyd-Jones can help communicate the gospel simply and lovingly. This approach encourages children to see Christianity as a relationship with God, not just a list of do's and don'ts. [15:24]
Deuteronomy 6:6-7 (ESV): "And these words that I command you today shall be on your heart. You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise."
Reflection: What are some practical ways you can engage the children in your life with the gospel in a way that fosters a genuine relationship with God?
Day 5: Discernment in Spiritual Experiences
All spiritual experiences, such as prophecies and visions, must be tested against Scripture and evaluated by mature believers. This ensures alignment with God's Word and guards against deception, emphasizing the need for humility and discernment in spiritual matters. While God can speak through these means, the gift of hearing God perfectly, as given to the biblical authors, is not present today. Therefore, believers are called to exercise discernment and seek guidance from Scripture and the community of faith. [19:06]
1 Thessalonians 5:20-21 (ESV): "Do not despise prophecies, but test everything; hold fast what is good."
Reflection: How can you develop a practice of testing spiritual experiences against Scripture and seeking counsel from mature believers?
Sermon Summary
In today's session, we explored several intriguing questions that often arise in the minds of believers. We began by addressing the age-old question of where Cain got his wife. The answer lies in understanding that Adam and Eve had many sons and daughters, and Cain married one of his sisters. This was possible because, in the early days of humanity, the genetic material was largely uncorrupted, allowing for such unions without the risks we associate with them today.
We then delved into the concept of being "above reproach" as a leader in the church. This standard, while rooted in biblical principles, can shift in its societal application over time. The core character requirements for church leaders remain constant, but what society deems disgraceful can change. This calls for a balance between maintaining biblical standards and understanding cultural contexts.
Next, we tackled the question of whether Christians can direct angels. The simple answer is no; angels are not under our command. They are ministering spirits sent by God to serve those who will inherit salvation. While they work for our benefit, it is God who directs them, not us.
We also discussed the importance of anchoring children in Christ. The key is to engage with them at their level, using resources like the "Jesus Storybook Bible" by Sally Lloyd-Jones. It's crucial to communicate the gospel simply and lovingly, avoiding the portrayal of Christianity as merely a set of rules.
Finally, we addressed the discernment of prophecies, dreams, and visions. All such experiences must be tested against Scripture and evaluated by mature believers. While God can speak through these means, the gift of hearing God perfectly, as given to the biblical authors, is not present today. Therefore, humility and discernment are essential when interpreting such experiences.

Sermon Clips
Adam and Eve had many other sons and daughters who were not named and Cain married his sister, Seth married his sister. Genesis chapter 5 verse 4 says this after he begot Seth, the days of Adam were eight hundred years and he had sons and daughters. Kind of the implication there is that he had many sons and daughters that the sons and daughters of Adam did not end with Cain and Abel and Seth. [00:03:13]
In the early days of creation, the genetic material of mankind was largely uncorrupted and because of that lack of corruption there was not the danger of deformity or some kind of impairment or disability from the marrying of close relatives as there is when two people marry today and have children when they're too close in their genetic pool. [00:04:31]
The idea of being above reproach, reproach has the idea of how would we call it disgrace or shame in a societal sense. It's not a sense of self-shame, it's what other people are ashamed or scandalized or look down on you upon. You know someone who has a very bad drinking habit and is a drunk all the time and can't keep their life together and is always losing their job they are under some sense of disgrace in society. [00:06:23]
The leader in God's church has to have a good testimony among people who are outside otherwise it'll be a disgrace to the community and a snare of the devil both for the church and for that individual. Aundrea, I think you bring up a very valid point that what is deemed a disgrace in the community will change from generation to generation. [00:08:37]
Most of the qualities that mark a leader among God's people have nothing to do with how they are perceived in the community, it's what their character is and how they act. This idea of having a good testimony, being blameless or being above reproach, it has more to do with how the person is perceived both in the church and in the broader community. [00:09:56]
I don't believe we can. I don't believe anywhere the scriptures say that we are in charge of directing angels. Angels don't work under our direction. Now I can see where there would be a little bit of confusion about this among God's people because even though we are not the boss of angels, there's a sense in which they work for our benefit. [00:11:47]
Hebrews chapter one verse 14 says this of angels are they not all ministering spirits sent forth to minister for those who will inherit salvation and it's a rhetorical question which means the answer is yes angels are ministering spirits and they're sent forth to minister for those who will inherit salvation. [00:12:18]
A good storybook Bible like that is very helpful and again I'd recommend the one by Sally Lloyd Jones but there's other ones out there. Well look I think we need to be talking to our kids about God, we need to be praying for our kids, we need to be praying with our kids but I don't think there's any real secrets to reaching kids at least not in my mind. [00:15:24]
What it is is you deal with the same things that you deal with adults but you deal with them at their level so you talk about the Bible but at their level you pray with them but at their level you talk about living the Christian life but at their level and so you just do that and you love them love them love them. [00:15:47]
I would take them to passages such as 1st Thessalonians chapter 5 verses 20 and 21 let's say this do not despise prophecies, test all things or something like this first Corinthians chapter 14 verse 29 let two or three prophets speak and let the others judge in other words suppose in prophetic words visions dreams they are all to be judged by mature believers. [00:17:28]
Everything is judged by the standard of God's Word you know I am among those who believe that the gifts of the Holy Spirit are for today that God can still speak through prophecies that God can still speak through dreams and visions and such but I'll tell you what I don't believe that every gift of the Holy Spirit is for today. [00:18:46]
Nobody hears God's Word perfectly now God is God there's only one way God can do anything and that's perfect so the problem is not that God does not speak perfectly the problem is he is no longer giving the gift of hearing God perfectly therefore prophecies need to be tested. [00:20:48]
