Even when life throws us into the deepest pits—whether through betrayal, loss, or injustice—God’s presence remains with us, offering comfort, hope, and the strength to overcome. Joseph’s story reminds us that even when he was discarded by his family and unjustly imprisoned, he was never truly alone; God was with him, guiding and sustaining him through every trial. In our own moments of despair or feeling devalued, we can call out to God, trusting that His steadfast love and presence will meet us right where we are, bringing peace that surpasses understanding and the assurance that we are never abandoned. [32:39]
Genesis 39:20-23 (ESV)
And Joseph's master took him and put him into the prison, the place where the king's prisoners were confined, and he was there in prison. But the Lord was with Joseph and showed him steadfast love and gave him favor in the sight of the keeper of the prison. And the keeper of the prison put Joseph in charge of all the prisoners who were in the prison. Whatever was done there, he was the one who did it. The keeper of the prison paid no attention to anything that was in Joseph's charge, because the Lord was with him. And whatever he did, the Lord made it succeed.
Reflection: When have you felt most alone or devalued? In that memory, can you invite God’s presence to meet you there and ask Him to show you how He was with you, even in the pit?
The world’s system measures worth by status, achievement, and outward success, but God’s wisdom reveals a different truth: every person is beloved and valued, regardless of their circumstances or failures. The voices of jealousy, comparison, and ambition create chaos and disorder, but the wisdom from above brings peace, mercy, and a harvest of righteousness. When we listen to God’s voice over the world’s, we discover our true identity as His beloved, and we are set free from the endless striving for approval. [37:27]
James 3:14-18 (ESV)
But if you have bitter jealousy and selfish ambition in your hearts, do not boast and be false to the truth. This is not the wisdom that comes down from above, but is earthly, unspiritual, demonic. For where jealousy and selfish ambition exist, there will be disorder and every vile practice. But the wisdom from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, open to reason, full of mercy and good fruits, impartial and sincere. And a harvest of righteousness is sown in peace by those who make peace.
Reflection: What voices or standards are you tempted to measure your worth by today? How can you intentionally listen for God’s voice of truth and wisdom instead?
God’s love for you is not based on your performance, your past, or your status; it is unconditional, steadfast, and unchanging. Like the father in the story of the prodigal son, God runs to embrace you, clothes you in honor, and calls you His beloved, no matter how far you’ve wandered or how unworthy you may feel. This love is not something you can earn or lose—it simply is, and it is the foundation of your true identity. [41:34]
Luke 15:20-24 (ESV)
And he arose and came to his father. But while he was still a long way off, his father saw him and felt compassion, and ran and embraced him and kissed him. And the son said to him, ‘Father, I have sinned against heaven and before you. I am no longer worthy to be called your son.’ But the father said to his servants, ‘Bring quickly the best robe, and put it on him, and put a ring on his hand, and shoes on his feet. And bring the fattened calf and kill it, and let us eat and celebrate. For this my son was dead, and is alive again; he was lost, and is found.’ And they began to celebrate.
Reflection: Is there an area of your life where you feel unworthy of God’s love? What would it look like to receive His embrace and let Him clothe you in His acceptance today?
God invites us to come to Him with our needs, our hurts, and our longing for love, promising that when we ask, seek, and knock, He will answer with His presence and provision. No matter how deep the pit or how heavy the burden, we are encouraged to reach out to God, trusting that He delights to give us what we truly need—His love, His peace, and His guidance. Each day is a new opportunity to ask for a fresh expression of His love and to let that love fill and heal our hearts. [45:24]
Matthew 7:7-8 (ESV)
Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives, and the one who seeks finds, and to the one who knocks it will be opened.
Reflection: What is one specific area where you need to experience God’s love or provision today? Will you take a moment to ask Him for it, trusting that He hears and responds?
When we receive and rest in God’s unconditional love, it transforms us from the inside out, enabling us to love and serve others—even those who are hurting or in their own pits. Joseph’s ability to overcome bitterness and become fruitful and winsome flowed from knowing he was favored by God, not just by people. As God’s love fills our hearts, we are empowered to reach out to others with compassion, mercy, and hope, becoming His hands and feet in a world that desperately needs to know they are beloved too. [52:55]
John 13:34-35 (ESV)
A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another. By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.
Reflection: Who is someone in your life or community who may be in a “pit” right now? How can you tangibly express God’s love to them this week?
This morning, we gathered to remember and celebrate the steadfast, unconditional love of God—a love that does not waver with our circumstances or our performance. We began by giving thanks for the many ways God ministers to us, whether through the beauty of creation or the comfort of friendship, and especially in our most difficult days. God’s love is not earned or deserved; it is simply who God is. This love, when received deeply, frees us from anxiety and grants us the rest that Jesus secured for us.
We reflected on the story of Joseph, a man who experienced both the heights of favor and the depths of rejection. Joseph’s journey from being his father’s favored son to being betrayed, enslaved, and imprisoned is a powerful reminder of how quickly life can change. Yet, what stands out is Joseph’s ability to overcome adversity without becoming bitter. Even in the pit and the prison, Joseph did not let his circumstances define him. Instead, he continued to serve faithfully, rising to positions of trust and influence wherever he was placed.
The secret to Joseph’s resilience was his connection to God. In the darkest moments, Joseph was not alone; God’s presence was with him, reminding him of his true worth. This is a profound truth for all of us: our value is not determined by the world’s systems of status, achievement, or approval, but by the unchanging love of our Creator. The world’s voices may try to tell us we are only as valuable as our success or reputation, but God’s voice speaks a deeper truth—each of us is beloved, cherished, and favored.
We also considered the story of the prodigal son, who, despite his failures, was welcomed home with open arms and restored to honor by his father. This is the heart of God: a love that is not conditional on our performance, but rooted in God’s own character. In our own “pit times”—moments of loss, shame, or despair—we are invited to cry out to God and receive again the assurance of our belovedness. As we experience this love, it transforms us, enabling us to love and heal others.
May we learn to listen for God’s voice above all others, especially in our moments of struggle. May we trust that God’s love is real, present, and powerful enough to bring us through every pit, and may we become agents of that love to those around us.
And that in the pit, he's not alone. And when he's in a prison, he's not alone. That there's this presence that is with him, encouraging him, helping him to overcome that which could overcome him. That this presence is with him so that he doesn't become bitter, but better. [00:32:39] (27 seconds) #NotAloneInDarkness
But in the midst of that, there is another voice, and it says, from above, there's this voice called wisdom that speaks truth, and as you hear it, it begins to set you free. It says, you matter. I am with you in the pit. Nothing can overcome you. I will not let you get overcome. I've overcome the world. I will help you overcome this crazy system that you're in. [00:38:21] (30 seconds) #BelovedBeyondCondition
``Every human soul has infinite value. The maker of heaven and earth designed your very DNA and calls you loved. You are beloved at your core. Every single one of you, every single person you meet in a grocery store, everyone in the world are beloved. God does not have that kind of system. [00:39:18] (21 seconds) #AnsweredInThePit
And so whenever someone stops and asks God, what do you think of me? That moment of interaction with God is, you're my beloved son. You're my beloved daughter. I love you with all of who I am. And that's what brings peace. And that's what helps us overcome this crazy, chaotic voice of this world. [00:39:39] (24 seconds) #DailyRenewalOfLove
I believe that's what happened to Joseph in the middle of the pit. The very presence of God drew near to remind him who he is. That Joseph, it's not about what you've done, what you will do. It's not about all of your moral failures, or even all about your successes. That doesn't matter. What matters is, God declares you beloved. [00:40:04] (36 seconds) #FavoredByTheHeavenlyCoat
When this world has failed you, and it will, as hard as you try to go up the ladder, it never satisfies. Conditional love never satisfies because you won't be able to meet all the conditions at one point. That's why Jesus talks about unconditional love. [00:43:31] (27 seconds) #AccessToDivineLove
This is my body broken for you. This is my blood broken for you. Like, I can't tell you. I've given everything for you. I have nothing left. Will you finally believe that you are loved? Will you finally believe that you are favored? That you're cherished. Not because of what you've done. Not because of the color of your skin, the house you live in, the job you've had, how you did on some test. No. Because of who he is. He is the lover of your soul. [00:43:58] (41 seconds)
And so whatever pit you might be in and sometimes they're little pits they're just a little bit of depression I don't know you just go I don't know I'm just kind of sad today it's not a good day it's just a crappy day and sometimes you have to say God I need a fresh expression of your love for me and just as the sun rises each day each day each day you have to ask me let me know I'm loved and as that love begins to fill your heart loved people loved people healed people healed people. [00:46:08] (42 seconds)
That's why Jesus says you can ask and it will be given seek and you'll find knock and the door will be opened that we have access to God our father so when you find yourself in a pit know that there's someone with you who loves you and will get you through. [00:47:19] (26 seconds)
