Bible Reading
Romans 3:19-20 “Now we know that whatever the law says it speaks to those who are under the law, so that every mouth may be stopped, and the whole world may be held accountable to God. For by works of the law no human being will be justified in his sight, since through the law comes knowledge of sin.”
[50:53]Genesis 15:6 “And he believed the LORD, and he counted it to him as righteousness.”
[59:52]Exodus 19:1-25 “On the third new moon after the people of Israel had gone out of the land of Egypt, on that day they came into the wilderness of Sinai. They set out from Rephidim and came into the wilderness of Sinai, and they encamped in the wilderness. There Israel encamped before the mountain, while Moses went up to God. The LORD called to him out of the mountain, saying, ‘Thus you shall say to the house of Jacob, and tell the people of Israel: “You yourselves have seen what I did to the Egyptians, and how I bore you on eagles’ wings and brought you to myself. Now therefore, if you will indeed obey my voice and keep my covenant, you shall be my treasured possession among all peoples, for all the earth is mine; and you shall be to me a kingdom of priests and a holy nation.” These are the words that you shall speak to the people of Israel.’
“So Moses came and called the elders of the people and set before them all these words that the LORD had commanded him. All the people answered together and said, ‘All that the LORD has spoken we will do.’ And Moses reported the words of the people to the LORD.
“And the LORD said to Moses, ‘Behold, I am coming to you in a thick cloud, that the people may hear when I speak with you, and may also believe you forever.’ When Moses told the words of the people to the LORD, the LORD said to Moses, ‘Go to the people and consecrate them today and tomorrow, and let them wash their garments and be ready for the third day. For on the third day the LORD will come down on Mount Sinai in the sight of all the people. And you shall set limits for the people all around, saying, “Take care not to go up into the mountain or touch the edge of it. Whoever touches the mountain shall be put to death. No hand shall touch him, but he shall be stoned or shot; whether beast or man, he shall not live.” When the trumpet sounds a long blast, they shall come up to the mountain.’
“So Moses went down from the mountain to the people and consecrated the people; and they washed their garments. And he said to the people, ‘Be ready for the third day; do not go near a woman.’
“On the morning of the third day there were thunders and lightnings and a thick cloud on the mountain and a very loud trumpet blast, so that all the people in the camp trembled. Then Moses brought the people out of the camp to meet God, and they took their stand at the foot of the mountain. Now Mount Sinai was wrapped in smoke because the LORD had descended on it in fire. The smoke of it went up like the smoke of a kiln, and the whole mountain trembled greatly. And as the sound of the trumpet grew louder and louder, Moses spoke, and God answered him in thunder. The LORD came down on Mount Sinai, to the top of the mountain. And the LORD called Moses to the top of the mountain, and Moses went up.”
[01:01:11]Romans 3:21-22 “But now the righteousness of God has been manifested apart from the law, although the Law and the Prophets bear witness to it—the righteousness of God through faith in Jesus Christ for all who believe. For there is no distinction:”
[01:18:33]Observation questions
- According to Romans 3:19-20, what three things does the law do, and what is the one thing it cannot do? [51:42]
- In Genesis 15, what made God’s promise to Abraham about descendants seem impossible from a human point of view? [57:37]
- Before Israel received the Ten Commandments, what had God already done for them, and what did he say he had brought them to himself for? [01:02:14]
- When the trumpet grew louder at Mount Sinai, where did Israel stand, and what did Moses do? [01:07:55]
Interpretation questions
- If the law gives knowledge of sin but cannot justify anyone, how can people mistakenly turn good behavior, Bible reading, fasting, or rule-keeping into a way of trying to earn acceptance with God? [01:19:25]
- Abraham was counted righteous when he believed God’s promise before the Torah was given. What does that show about the kind of faith God has always desired from his people? [59:49]
- Exodus 19 presents God as both holy and dangerous, yet also as the one who brought Israel to himself. How do both parts of that picture help explain why drawing near to God must be based on his invitation and grace? [01:05:04]
- Romans 3:21-22 says that God’s righteousness comes through faith in Jesus Christ. How does Christ’s role as the spotless Lamb change the basis on which a guilty person can be accepted by God? [01:24:01]
Application questions
- Where are you most tempted to measure your standing with God by your recent spiritual performance—whether you have prayed enough, read enough, obeyed enough, or avoided enough failure? What would it look like to come to the throne of grace instead? [01:20:08]
- Abraham “amened” God when the promise looked impossible. What promise of God is especially difficult for you to trust right now because the circumstances feel too big, delayed, or confusing? [01:00:03]
- Israel stayed at the foot of the mountain because fear kept them from responding to God’s invitation. Is there an area where fear, shame, or a sense of unworthiness keeps you from praying honestly and drawing near to God? [01:08:11]
- Abraham’s obedience came from trusting God, not from trying to build a perfect resume. What is one act of obedience God may be inviting you into that could flow from faith rather than pressure, fear, or the need to prove yourself? [01:16:26]
- When you feel “crumpled, soggy, dirty, or ripped up” by failure or weakness, what accusations do you tend to believe? How does Christ’s righteousness answer those accusations? [01:23:06]
- Believers are welcomed because the spotless Lamb is accepted, not because they have made themselves spotless. What would boldness before God look like in one specific need, struggle, relationship, or decision you are facing this week? [01:24:18]
