Two Witnesses: Death, Resurrection, and God's Reign

Revelation 11 brings John into a deep and tricky part of the vision, but not a part for the church to sidestep. The first verses place a measuring rod in John’s hand and set the temple, the altar, and the worshipers before him. The temple may point to a literal rebuilt temple in Jerusalem, or it may stand as a symbol, but the text makes one thing clear: God marks off what belongs to him. The inner temple is measured and guarded, while the outer court is trampled for forty two months, showing spiritual protection in the middle of real outer suffering.

The two witnesses then come forward as some of Revelation’s most intriguing figures. Their sackcloth speaks of mourning, especially mourning over Israel’s backslidden condition and over a world that refuses to repent. Their ministry carries authority that could only come from God Almighty. Fire comes from their mouths, the heavens can be shut so rain does not fall, waters can turn to blood, and plagues can strike the earth, echoing Elijah and Moses. The beast from the bottomless pit attacks, overpowers, and kills the witnesses when their testimony is finished. Their bodies lie in the great city, described like Sodom, Egypt, and Babylon, a picture of immorality, oppression, slavery, and the spirit of the antichrist. The world gazes at them, refuses burial, gloats, and even sends gifts, almost like a twisted celebration. Darkness cannot stand light, so the world mocks the ones God sent.

God then steps in with that great turning point: “but after three and a half days.” The breath of life from God enters the witnesses, and they stand on their feet. Terror strikes those who see them. Heaven calls, “Come up here,” and God takes them up in a cloud while their enemies look on. Evil’s triumph is temporary, and God cannot be outdone.

The earthquake that follows kills seven thousand, and the survivors are terrified and give glory to the God of heaven. The seventh trumpet then sounds, and heaven declares that the kingdom of the world has become the kingdom of the Lord and of his Messiah. The twenty four elders fall on their faces in plain, real worship. God’s temple opens, the ark is seen, and lightning, thunder, earthquake, and hail display just a glimpse of his mighty presence, with more still to come.
