Trust means putting confidence and dependence in someone who can truly be depended on. Trust matters on an outdoor adventure, whether the path depends on a GPS, an old paper map, or the gear carried along the way. Trust in God matters even more when the road is confusing and the next step does not make sense.
God’s big story follows His promise to Abraham through Jacob and then Joseph. Joseph’s brothers let jealousy take over and sold him away, while Jacob believed his favorite son was dead. God stayed with Joseph in Potiphar’s house, even when Joseph was a servant far from home. God gave Joseph success there, but Joseph’s refusal to sin against God and Potiphar led to a lie, a prison cell, and another hard season.
God remained with Joseph in prison just as surely as He had been with him in Potiphar’s house. Joseph was put in charge of the prisoners, and God gave him the meaning of the cupbearer’s and baker’s dreams. The cupbearer received good news, the baker received hard news, and both dreams happened exactly as God had shown Joseph. Joseph hoped the cupbearer would remember him, but the cupbearer forgot, leaving Joseph stuck in prison after everything he had already gone through.
Trust kept Joseph looking to God when life did not make sense. God did not waste the slavery, the false accusation, the prison, or the forgotten request. Two years later, Pharaoh’s troubling dreams opened the door that Joseph could never have opened for himself. Joseph stood before the ruler of Egypt and gave God the credit right away: “I can’t do that, God can do it.”
God showed Pharaoh that seven years of plenty would be followed by seven years of terrible hunger. God also gave Joseph the wisdom to prepare, store food, and protect the people before the famine came. Pharaoh recognized that the Spirit of God was with Joseph and made him second in command over Egypt. Joseph went from prisoner to the right-hand man of the whole nation because God had been with him the whole time.
Trust in the Lord does not mean hard things never happen. Trust means God remains present at home, at school, at work, and in every hard situation. Identity does not come from clothes, hair, a role, or looking important. God calls every believer a son or daughter, and that makes each person important. Proverbs 3:5 calls God’s people to trust in the Lord with all their heart and not depend on their own understanding.

Key Takeaways
- 1. God stays through every hard season. God’s presence did not leave Joseph when his circumstances got worse. Slavery, prison, and forgotten promises did not mean God had stopped working. Trust grows when God’s people learn that His nearness is not measured by how easy life feels. [46:32]
- 2. God’s timing is never wasted. Joseph’s long wait in prison looked like a dead end, but God was putting pieces together that Joseph could not yet see. The cupbearer’s failure to remember Joseph was not the end of Joseph’s story. God can use even delayed answers to prepare His people for something bigger. [50:46]
- 3. Give God the credit first. Joseph stood before Pharaoh with every reason to make himself look important, yet he said, “I can’t do that, God can do it.” Humility does not deny God-given ability; humility knows where that ability comes from. God receives glory when His people refuse to treat His gifts like personal greatness. [52:42]
- 4. Trust God beyond personal understanding. God’s plan for Joseph made little sense while Joseph was living through it. God’s wisdom eventually turned suffering into provision for an entire nation. Proverbs 3:5 calls faith to rest in God’s heart when circumstances cannot be figured out.
