Trusting God’s Provision in Changing Times

The Israelites in the wilderness sound a lot like tired toddlers at the end of a long day. God had brought them out of more than four hundred years of slavery, but only two months into the journey, hunger and discomfort had pushed gratitude aside. The wilderness had begun to feel longer and harder than anybody expected, and the people complained bitterly.

God does not answer their complaints with a lecture about attitude. God does not tell them to look on the bright side or hand them a five step plan to feel better. God hears them. God cares. God provides quail at twilight and manna in the morning, giving the people their fill of bread so that they might know the Lord as their God.

The manna carries the deeper lesson. God gives enough for today, but not a stash to control tomorrow. The Israelites who tried to save it up found maggots instead, because the journey required a day by day trust. God wanted them to learn that the God who fed them today would still be faithful tomorrow and in all the days ahead.

The fear of tomorrow still tempts churches to clutch tightly to what they have. The story of Lumen at the University of Texas shows a different way. Lumen faced a choice between selling everything, keeping everything exactly the same, or trusting God toward a third way. The ministry released its attachment to a particular outcome, partnered for new student housing, and found a flexible space for worship, a food pantry, and Tailgate Tuesdays that feed hungry students every week.

The mission continued even when the building and the methods changed. The Spirit led a congregation away from preserving the familiar and toward noticing hungry people right in front of them. Manna and quail faith means trusting that God who gave a congregation its mission long ago will continue to reveal that mission over time.

God meets tired, cranky, scared, and complaining people in the wilderness. God receives hunger, exhaustion, grief, and fear about all that has changed. The God who fed a whole nation in the middle of nowhere still shows up every day, not as a God who provided once long ago, but as the God who is present right here today.
