Have you ever had times when God seemed a long, long way away? Amen. as if the dreams he once gave you had disappeared and the path you're on just doesn't make sense or perhaps at this point in time you're thinking no actually life's pretty good right now I don't need God my life's going really well without him or maybe you do realise him realise you need him but you're wondering if you've strayed too far for God to work in your life [00:41:30] (43 seconds)

as I've sat with our passage this week I've wondered if that was how Joseph was feeling at this stage in his life today we pick up the story in Genesis 42 with a famine ravaging the land years have passed since he first dreamed of his brothers bowing down to him and much has changed but at this point in his life it might seem like he's forgotten the dreams that God actually gave him more than 20 years ago at that time he's been betrayed he's been enslaved he's been falsely accused and he's been put in prison he's no longer the young man dreaming of his brothers bowing down to him instead he's the second most important person in the whole of Egypt seemingly consumed with survival and politics and overseeing the distribution of grain it might be tempting to think that Joseph's hardships were behind him that he'd finally reached that place that God had intended him to be but as we step into this chapter of his life we see that God wasn't finished with him his story wasn't just about saving Egypt or even about rising to power God was not finished with him God was still at work still at work in Joseph's heart refining him preparing him for reconciliation with his family and weaving together a story far greater than Joseph could have imagined but as we'll see even when Joseph seemed to go his own way God's presence was unwavering and his purpose was unchanging so let's explore how God used Joseph's struggles to make him a better man for himself to forge his faith and what that means for us today by walking through Genesis 42 and 43 [00:42:14] (123 seconds)

Joseph's heart pounded as he saw the faces of his brothers, the same faces that had once jeered as they sold him into slavery. Yet he composed himself as expressions to him. All right, so we do. Joseph, where do you come from? Judah, from the land of Canaan to buy food. Narrator, Joseph's piercing eyes seemed to look right through them. Joseph, you are spies. You've come to see where our land is unprotected. You know, you're angry with these guys, remember? No, my lord. Your servants have come to buy food. We are all sons of one man. Honest men, not spies. Honest men? You say you're brothers? Prove it. You have another brother, do you not? Bring him here or I will know you are liars. Narrator, calms things down a bit. The brothers' faces paled as Joseph ordered them to be taken away, leaving them to stew in their fear and guilt. [00:47:15] (61 seconds)

After three days, Joseph brought them back. He offered them a chance to prove their honesty. One brother would stay behind while the rest returned home to fetch the youngest. The brothers conferred among themselves, unaware that Joseph could understand their every word. Simeon, this is where you guys have to be of a dual personality. Simeon, this is punishment. We are being repaid for what we did to Joseph. We saw his anguish. We heard his pleas. We did nothing. And then Reuben, did I not tell you? Actually, no, we'll change this. I think you guys can be Reuben and Jacob. Otherwise, we won't have back and forth. So you're arguing across the room. Did I not tell you? I said not to harm the boy, but you would not listen. Now we must answer for his blood. [00:48:29] (49 seconds)

I don't know about you, but when I read Genesis 42 and 43, I see Joseph as quite vindictive. and manipulative. One who seems to have decided to go his own way rather than to follow God's plan for him. Someone who seems to have lost his faith. Lost his faith in God, or at least doesn't trust him as he once did. I found myself asking, does he doubt God? But that's too simple. Joseph's response is really quite complex. On the one hand, yes, it does seem quite harsh. I mean, he could have immediately revealed himself, forgiven his brothers and celebrated the reunion with men that he had not seen for 20 years. But he doesn't. Instead, he tests them, speaking harshly to them and accusing them of being spies. [00:58:34] (65 seconds)

When we do, we realise that the, the, the famine wasn't an accident. The brothers coming to Egypt was no coincidence. We can see that every small detail was part of God's plan. I mean, think for other, for instance, about his brothers bowing before Joseph. Isn't that his first dream coming true? When his brother's sheaves of wheat bowed down to him. But it's not just that. It seems Joseph doesn't see that. Doesn't see that that's what's happening. And so he doesn't see God's hand in the meeting with his brothers. Or maybe he does. And he deliberately ignores it because of all those feelings of being hurt and angry that have just resurfaced as he looks at his brothers. Pushing him to do things in a particular way. Rather than bowing to God's way. And doing things the way he knows God would have him do. [01:00:25] (66 seconds)

But let's not be too hard on Joseph. After all, his response to his brother's arrival is perfectly natural. He's only a man. He's a human being. It's no wonder he's cautious. Probably conflicted and hesitant. to trust. He isn't hesitant to trust his brothers and as a result probably he's even thinking, I don't know that I can trust God in this. Let's say before we are too harsh on Joseph, let's think about ourselves. How often do we find ourselves in Joseph's shoes? Perhaps we've had time where we've felt far from God. Where the hurt of the past clouds our ability to see his hand in the situation. Maybe we've acted out of fear or bitterness trying to manage situations on our own. I have. [01:01:45] (74 seconds)

How do we learn to trust God in the most challenging of times? When nothing seems to be going right. When life seems to be a constant struggle. When we can't see the way ahead. How do we hold on to the promises that he has given us? Whether they are given directly to us or whether they've been given through his word. How do we hold on to those promises when they seem to be taking a long time to come about? I'm reminded of an old hymn. One which I think was my dad's favourite, although I always got two of them confused. And the first verse goes like this. When upon life's billows you are tempest -tossed. When you are discouraged, thinking all is lost. Count your many blessings, name them one by one. And it will surprise you what the Lord has done. [01:03:27] (59 seconds)

we can take heart so maybe today you are like Joseph far from the dreams that God has given you maybe you're in a stage where you just don't trust him, he's okay with that he's not going to leave you there, but he's okay with that maybe you doubt him, you've dealt with that before too maybe you're even struggling with your faith right now take heart, God is present even when we go our own ways he is faithful even when we don't trust him he hasn't forgotten you and he will use what you are going through the struggles you have to forge an even deeper faith in you, a deeper faith that you will have in him so that you are prepared for what God is calling you to and that's what we're going to find out about next week aren't we, Yvonne? thank you, Julia [01:05:28] (71 seconds)
