Joseph's betrothed, engaged to be married to Mary. But then she's found pregnant and it throws everything, throws the whole situation into a frenzy. Joseph doesn't know what to do. He's contemplating, what do I do? God, what do I do? And then at least he's an honorable man. He wants to at least divorce her quietly so that she doesn't, have any shame, any punishment, anything like that. [00:09:41] (29 seconds) (Download raw clip | Download cropped clip)

Being engaged or betrothed, you basically already were married. It was just that the ceremony didn't happen yet, right? So there were fees and stuff that parents had to get involved in, paying the other person, this and this. And then there's a year period where you are technically, you're engaged, but you're technically married. Like everybody's treating you. You know, oh, that's Mary. She's off limits. She's betrothed to Joseph. [00:10:12] (29 seconds) (Download raw clip | Download cropped clip)

But as he considered these things, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream saying, Joseph, just kidding, son of David, do not fear to take Mary as your wife, for that which is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. She will bear a son and you shall call his name Jesus. For he will save his people from their sins. [00:12:07] (23 seconds) (Download raw clip | Download cropped clip)

The angel's job at this point is to be God's intervention. God sent this angel to give Joseph the story of what's going to happen. This is why Mary is pregnant. This is exactly true. What Mary is claiming, Joseph, is true. That's the whole point of the angel coming. Now, the angel describes everything to come. Do not be afraid. Take Mary as your wife. When Joseph woke up from sleep, he did as the angel of the Lord commanded him. He took his wife, but knew her not until she had given birth to a son. And he called his name Jesus. The acceptance. We don't have a lot of info about that, right? But what we do know is that he woke up from his dream. Everybody say, wake up, Joe. Wake up, Joe. Joseph could have easily disregarded Mary for what he perceived as adultery and leave, but he wanted to do it the most honorable way that he could. The second thing we can learn about Joseph is this. Don't act based on emotions. Man, we're humans. That's our thing. Don't act based on emotions. [00:20:18] (20 seconds) (Download raw clip | Download cropped clip)

God is always on time. You may feel like he's late, but no, he's not. He's not late in your situation. He's not. God is always on time. God timed when he was sending the angel to Joseph. Clearly he did. He could have sent the angel to Joseph before Mary said anything to him, but he didn't. Why? Because he needed Joseph to learn something. Even though Joseph didn't fully understand in the moment, God was using his circumstance to bring about the savior of the world, Jesus. If you leave today not remembering everything, statistically you won't. Most of you will leave thinking that guy was annoying. The big idea, though, is what I want you to remember.
