When the Israelites faced the daunting challenge of entering the Promised Land, they allowed fear and uncertainty to overshadow the miracles God had already performed for them. Instead of trusting in God's faithfulness, they focused on the obstacles before them, amplifying their anxieties and doubts. In our own lives, we often magnify our problems and let them become bigger than our faith in God. But God calls us to remember His past faithfulness and to trust Him with the unknown, believing that He is able to lead us through every challenge. [01:32:54]
Numbers 13:27-33 (ESV)
And they told him, “We came to the land to which you sent us. It flows with milk and honey, and this is its fruit. However, the people who dwell in the land are strong, and the cities are fortified and very large. And besides, we saw the descendants of Anak there. The Amalekites dwell in the land of the Negeb. The Hittites, the Jebusites, and the Amorites dwell in the hill country. And the Canaanites dwell by the sea, and along the Jordan.” But Caleb quieted the people before Moses and said, “Let us go up at once and occupy it, for we are well able to overcome it.” Then the men who had gone up with him said, “We are not able to go up against the people, for they are stronger than we are.” So they brought to the people of Israel a bad report of the land that they had spied out, saying, “The land, through which we have gone to spy it out, is a land that devours its inhabitants, and all the people that we saw in it are of great height. And there we saw the Nephilim (the sons of Anak, who come from the Nephilim), and we seemed to ourselves like grasshoppers, and so we seemed to them.”
Reflection: What is one area of your life where you are letting fear or uncertainty overshadow your trust in God? How can you choose to focus on His faithfulness today?
When faced with difficulty, the Israelites wished to return to the familiarity of Egypt rather than trust God for the future He promised. It is easy to want to retreat to what is comfortable when life gets hard, but God calls us to move forward in faith, believing that He has not brought us this far to leave us. The temptation to go back to old habits or ways of living can be strong, but God’s desire is for us to step into the new life and purpose He has for us, even when the path ahead is uncertain. [01:35:33]
Numbers 14:2-4 (ESV)
And all the people of Israel grumbled against Moses and Aaron. The whole congregation said to them, “Would that we had died in the land of Egypt! Or would that we had died in this wilderness! Why is the Lord bringing us into this land, to fall by the sword? Our wives and our little ones will become a prey. Would it not be better for us to go back to Egypt?” And they said to one another, “Let us choose a leader and go back to Egypt.”
Reflection: Is there a “familiar Egypt” in your life that you are tempted to return to when things get tough? What would it look like to trust God and move forward instead?
No matter how overwhelming our circumstances may seem, God’s presence is with us and He is greater than any challenge we face. The Israelites forgot that the same God who delivered them from Egypt was still with them, ready to lead them into victory. When we focus on God’s greatness rather than the size of our problems, we find courage and hope to keep going. God is not distant—He meets us in our moments of anguish, grief, and fear, offering comfort, restoration, and hope. [42:15]
Isaiah 41:10 (ESV)
Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.
Reflection: What is one problem or worry you have been amplifying lately? How can you intentionally shift your focus to God’s presence and power today?
God calls us to be people who are grounded in His Word, not swayed by the ups and downs of life or by the reports of others. Whether we tend toward optimism or pessimism, our anchor must be the truth of God’s promises. When we let God’s Word guide our thoughts and actions, we can navigate both the highs and lows of life with confidence, knowing that He is faithful to fulfill what He has spoken. [01:41:15]
Psalm 119:105 (ESV)
Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.
Reflection: In what ways can you let God’s Word guide your decisions and conversations this week, especially when you hear negative or discouraging news?
Trusting God is not a one-time event but a daily walk, choosing to believe in His goodness and faithfulness in every situation. Like the Israelites circling Jericho, sometimes we must keep going even when we don’t see immediate results, trusting that God will fulfill His promises in His time. When we live faithfully by His Word and surrender our doubts and struggles to Him, we can be confident that He will see us through and bring all things together for our good. [01:43:02]
Galatians 6:9 (ESV)
And let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up.
Reflection: What is one area where you are tempted to give up or lose heart? How can you choose faithfulness and perseverance, trusting God with the outcome?
This morning, we gathered as a family in God’s presence, reminded that He is faithful even in our chaos and anxious moments. We called on the name above every name, the One who calms storms and raises the dead, not just for ourselves but because we know He meets us when we call. We prayed for our community, for comfort in loss, and for hope in a world that desperately needs it. We asked God to help us be salt and light, to walk in obedience, and to be the hands and feet of Christ—generous, encouraging, forgiving, and loving, living out our faith in tangible ways.
We celebrated the next generation, from youth Alpha weekends to sports camps, and honored the volunteers and parents who invest in our young people. We recognized that every person, regardless of age or calling, is vital to the body of Christ. We rejoiced in testimonies from retreats like Overflow, where students encountered God in powerful ways, and we witnessed the joy of water baptisms—public declarations of faith and new life in Christ.
Turning to the Word, we reflected on the story of the Israelites in Numbers 13 and 14. After being miraculously delivered from Egypt, they faced the daunting challenge of entering the promised land. Ten spies spread fear, focusing on the giants and fortified cities, while only Caleb and Joshua trusted God’s promise. The people, overwhelmed by fear, longed to return to the familiarity of slavery rather than trust God for the unknown. We saw how easy it is to let fear and bad reports dominate our thinking, to amplify our problems until they seem bigger than God.
Yet, God calls us to trust Him, even when the future is uncertain. Like the Israelites, we are tempted to return to what is familiar when life gets hard, but God has not brought us this far to leave us. The real slavery is sin, and God’s desire is to lead us into freedom and purpose. Trusting God is a daily walk, not just a Sunday experience. When we focus on His faithfulness and live by His Word, we find the courage to move forward, knowing He will fulfill His promises. Let us take that one thing we struggle to trust God with and surrender it, confident that He is good and will see us through.
Here's what I think happens in our lives sometimes. We have our encounter with God, we start following him, but as soon as things get tough, we say to ourselves, why don't I just go back to the life I lived before? Wouldn't it be easier if I just went back to the life I was living before with those friends and those, and the alcohol that I used to have and this and that? But God didn't take the Israelites out of Egypt just so they could wander the wilderness. He had promised a land for them and God is promising something for your life today as well. He didn't bring you this far to leave you here.

It's easy to go back to what has become familiar. And so I was saying to our students on Friday, I was saying it's going to be really hard for you to go from an experience at overflow into your everyday life because I hate to say it, nothing changes other than what's in your heart. The situations you're going to encounter at home, at school, like those things aren't probably going to change on the exterior. And so you have to know that you're going to have some opposition. You're going to have to know that life with Christ is a daily walk, isn't it? It's not just a Sunday to Sunday, it's not a Friday to Friday, it's every single day.

We depend on our human understanding and fear starts to set in and we start to worry, we become more focused on our problem or our opposition than we do on obeying God. See, there should have just been an urgency to say yes to God and say, yeah, God, we'll trust you. You've brought us this far, so we'll just, let's just keep going.

If the Lord is pleased with us, he will lead us into that land, a land flowing with milk and honey, and will give it to us. Only don't rebel against the Lord, and don't be afraid of the people of the land, because we will devour them. Their protection is gone, but the Lord is with us. Don't be afraid of them.

Sometimes we just need to trust that God's word can be the word that guides us instead of the words, well, didn't you hear that? Because how many of us have heard something, and then we start talking about it? And then we get other people starting to talk about it. Before you know it, whatever bad news we're talking about has spread like wildfire, and we can't find a positive thing to talk about anymore.
[01:41:06]
(25 seconds)
God didn't bring you this far to leave you here. And some of us need to hear this because some of us have been in church way too long that we have been going through the motions and not trusting God to take us to where he wants us.
