Trusting God: Cultivating Faith Through Life's Challenges

Summary

In today's message, we explored the profound theme of cultivating trust in God, using Psalm 34 as our guiding scripture. Trusting God is not just a verbal affirmation but a deep-seated conviction that requires us to seek Him earnestly, experience His goodness, live righteously, and rest in His deliverance. We began with a personal story from my childhood, illustrating how my fascination with fire led to a near disaster, which my grandmother's intervention resolved. This story served as a metaphor for how God intervenes in our lives, even when we are silent in our struggles.

Psalm 34, attributed to David during a time of peril, is a testament to trusting God through life's challenges. David, despite being anointed and celebrated, found himself in a cave, reflecting on God's faithfulness. His journey teaches us that trust is cultivated through seeking God earnestly, as David did, by pursuing Him with sincerity and prioritizing our relationship with Him above all else. This pursuit involves engaging with God's word, prayer, and seeking spiritual counsel.

Experiencing God's goodness is another crucial step. David's invitation to "taste and see that the Lord is good" is a call to engage all our senses in a relationship with God, much like savoring a delicious meal. This intimate experience of God's goodness strengthens our trust in Him.

Living righteously is the natural outcome of experiencing God's goodness. It requires a transformation in our behavior, speech, and interactions with others, reflecting the change that comes from a genuine relationship with God. This transformation is supported by surrounding ourselves with spiritually mature individuals who hold us accountable.

Finally, resting in God's deliverance involves trusting His promises and timing. Like King Jehoshaphat, who relied on God's plan rather than his own strength, we are called to trust that God will deliver us from our troubles. This trust anchors our souls, providing stability and peace amidst life's storms.

Cultivating trust in God begins with a sincere and earnest pursuit of Him. This involves prioritizing your relationship with God above all else, engaging deeply with His word, and seeking Him through prayer and spiritual counsel. By prioritizing your relationship with God, you open yourself to experiencing His presence and guidance in your life. [12:47]

Psalm 63:1-3 (ESV): "O God, you are my God; earnestly I seek you; my soul thirsts for you; my flesh faints for you, as in a dry and weary land where there is no water. So I have looked upon you in the sanctuary, beholding your power and glory. Because your steadfast love is better than life, my lips will praise you."

By actively seeking to experience God's goodness, you allow His love and grace to permeate every aspect of your life, reinforcing your trust in His divine plan. [15:37]

Psalm 119:103-105 (ESV): "How sweet are your words to my taste, sweeter than honey to my mouth! Through your precepts I get understanding; therefore I hate every false way. Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path."

Quotes

I really really really really really love fire I mean some of you like fire too if you're honest about it there's just like I don't know there's just something about it it's just um the way that it it burns it's like eating the paper it's like I don't know I feel the gentle warmth of it is just fire is amazing and it has always intrigued me [00:00:03]

so um one day when I was in front of the fire uh I was squeezing this glue Into the Fire and I got this whoosh again so excited except for this time the fire started to come back on the stream now at that point most kids would probably squeal and run out of the room not me I was going to handle it myself so the smartest thing I could think of at that time to do was to squeeze the tube even harder [00:02:01]

I mean when it comes to certain situations there are just some things that we don't trust God god with I I know I'm guilty of it I've done it myself I like to handle things because I am a fixer so if something's broken it is in my nature to fix whatever it is it's just it just comes automatic to me that's to attempt to fix it sometimes I get it right a majority of the time I get it absolutely wrong [00:03:21]

I will bless the Lord at all times his praise shall my Souls make his boast in the Lord his praise shall continue to be in my mouth the humble will hear thereof and be glad then it says oh magnify the Lord with me let us exalt his name together that's so beautiful it sounds like uh the psalmist when he's writing this he's really really really got it going on it it sounds like everything is wonderful and this person um has has it all together [00:06:15]

David the little Shepherd boy whom Samuel uh went to his father Jesse's house and said hey God sent me here said the king is going to be right here I need to find him Jesse goes gets three of his finest Sons the three finest Sons he had he said nope these won't do do you have another son he gets David David is Anointed and David will be king of uh Israel okay well David had already beg to line up his resume he killed Goliath [00:08:31]

how do we cultivate trust in him how do we do it well the first of these things that we have to do is that we have to se seek God earnestly and David Begins by emphasizing the importance of seeking God With all sincerity in his heart he declares in verse four I saw the Lord and he heard me and delivered me from all of my fears this is a moment of reflection this is David reflecting over all the things that he'd been through [00:11:46]

we have to go with Reckless abandon toward him that means that we have to deprioritize some things now here it is now I there are certain things that I do love I love going to the mall and walking around and seeing the people but sometimes what I want to do is not as important nowhere near as important as my relationship with him nowhere near as important as seeking him and looking to him and wanting to be with him and wanting to get to know him intimately [00:14:00]

to truly experience his goodness to truly trust him we must see his goodness by the time we get to verse 8 in Psalm 34 it says oh taste and see that the Lord is good blessed is the man that trusts in him and it's interesting because this come from experience this means that the more David tasted him the more he saw that he was good and I want to suggest that every time he took a bite of Jesus he got good and good her [00:15:07]

you mean after you've sought him earnestly and after you've tasted him that means that there ought to be some change about you that people can see that you have sought him and that you have tasted him and now you are this new Bible says that if you are in him you are a new creature that old behold all things are new old things have passed away so there ought to be something different in your speech there ought to be something different in your walk and in your talk [00:20:35]

finally trusting God involves resting in the promises that he made in verse 17 and verse 18 when he says when the righteous Cry for Help the Lord hears them and delivers them out of all of their trouble the Lord is near the Brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit this is a great assurance that we have because that means that in all of life's challenge es that we could face God is still there for us [00:25:31]

my brothers and sisters I want to share with you that when you are silent even in your Silent Cries God hears you and he comes to wherever you are and even when it seems like there's a breath of time and I have been praying and I have been reading and I have been going to small groups and I have been doing all of these things but it just seems like where are you Lord why have you not delivered me but I want you to know that your deliverance is coming [00:30:33]

God sent Jesus us down here in our silence to put the fire out and Deliver Us now here it is my parents thought I deserved a whipping like I should have got toe up for setting the living room on fire but my grandmother provided me with some Grace she covered me and she protected me me from what should have been the best whooping I could have ever told y'all about that's what God does for us every day of Our Lives [00:32:02]
