Trust in God sits at the heart of stewardship. The gifts entrusted to each person count because each person is made in God’s image, not because of anything earned or accomplished. But the need for control can get in the way of offering those gifts. Old hurts, failures, and fears can pile up like baseball cards in a shoebox, taking up space and squeezing the life out of the person holding on. Trust opens the possibility that it is okay to let go.
Proverbs 3:5–10 begins with the heart: “Trust in the Lord with all your heart.” That trust is not rooted in having God figured out. Faith begins with the belief that God is good, that God is love, and that God’s wisdom is making a way toward reconciliation and redemption. Acknowledging God means more than keeping God as a thought project on Sunday morning. A heart rooted in relationship makes room for God’s imagination and for the gifts God has entrusted to it.
God’s promise to make paths straight does not mean those paths will be easy. God carries people through difficult times when their own strength cannot carry them. The temptation to be wise in one’s own estimation pulls in another direction. Fear of not having enough builds walls, shores up possessions, and keeps others out. The fear of the Lord is different: wonder at the foot of Mount Everest, an awareness of God’s mystery and grandeur that loosens the grip of ego and certainty.
The river of God’s love gives trust its picture. The instinct to stand up in white water can trap a person beneath the current. The same scramble for control can turn life into a desperate attempt to create a river that is already flowing. Faith does not need to push the river. God’s love is already at work.
Proverbs connects this trust with healing, then turns toward honoring God with wealth and first fruits. Stewardship grows from that healed place into trustworthiness toward others. The raft becomes a place of reaching out to neighbors, friends, and even enemies, not a guarantee that danger is gone. The full barns and overflowing vats become pictures of shared provision, stocked pantry shelves, and a wedding party that keeps going. God gathers gifts, time, talents, and treasure into a love that makes a way for one another.
