Trust in the process before the promise

Philippians 4 opens with a command that has to be said twice: “Rejoice in the Lord always. And again, I say rejoice.” Paul repeats it because when life start lifing, one hearing is not always enough. Rejoicing is not decoration around prayer. Rejoicing is the place that positions the child of God for breakthrough, because “the joy of the Lord is strength,” and without joy there is no strength to overcome.

Satan works hard to steal that joy, and the enemy does not only use strongholds, cycles, and curses. Satan uses ignorance against God’s people. The enemy wants the child of God sitting around with power on the inside saying, “Lord, help me,” when God has already given weapons that are mighty to pull down strongholds. The enemy wants the mouth closed, because a joyful mouth declares the Lord of lords and the King of kings.

Philippians then says, “Be anxious for nothing.” The text does not deny mental battles or the place of medicine, but it refuses to let medicine become God. Prayer must come in order: no anxiety, prayer and supplication, a humble request, and gratitude. God is not moved by angry, out-of-order demanding. God hears the humble heart that comes with thanksgiving.

The peace of God is heaven’s security system, “the guard that never clocks out.” The peace of God guards hearts and minds through Christ Jesus better than ADT, cameras, alarms, or anything that can be checked on a phone. The peace of man is temporary because it trusts what can be seen, traced, felt, and controlled. The peace of God keeps the heart and mind when nobody can keep themselves.

Saul’s anxiety showed what happens when emotions take the place of faith. Moses’ anger showed what happens when a person assumes what God said instead of obeying what God actually said. Grace is precious, but grace is not a get out of jail card for disobedience. Worry tells God, “I don’t trust you,” and even says, “I don’t need you.”

Prayer has to touch everything, even the small things, because small things snowball when they are not brought to God. Thanksgiving has to come in advance, even when nothing can be seen yet. The mind fixed on God is kept in perfect peace, while the mind fixed on circumstances gets held in perfect chaos. Praise becomes the weapon, like Jericho, where the walls did not fall by might or power, but by obedience and the Spirit of the Lord.
