Trust the Path / 6.21.26

Proverbs 3:5-6 puts the whole issue right out front: “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding.” Solomon does not hand out a cute verse for coffee mugs. Solomon gives a way to navigate life when the road gets confusing, delayed, twisted, and full of potholes.

The GPS picture makes the point plain. A person trying to drive through a city with no guide ends up circling the same exits, burning time, and feeling stuck. Life without Jesus works like that. Life has too many turns, too many obstacles, and too many places where human understanding just does not have enough range to see what is ahead.

Trust begins with the Lord, not with the Lord’s performance. Human trust usually works like credit at a bank: a little access is given, then more is offered when somebody proves worthy. Solomon does not say, “Trust in the Lord once he does what was expected.” Solomon simply says, “Trust in the Lord.” Faith believes what God says. Trust activates that faith when the waiting is long and the answer does not come the way a person thought it would.

The heart makes that trust complicated. Jeremiah says the heart is deceitful, and Proverbs calls for all of it. The heart is not just emotions. The heart includes thoughts, will, intentions, desires, and feelings. A person can aim one part toward God while another part stays unchecked, and pressure exposes that conflict. Trusting the Lord with all the heart means bringing the whole inner life under his care.

The rich young ruler shows how hard it is to release control. Jesus tells him to sell everything, give to the poor, and then follow. The man walks away sad because his money, status, power, and comfort had become the things he held too tightly. Jesus was not being mean. Jesus was giving him the real answer: unclench the fist, lay down false security, and follow.

Seeking God’s will is active, not passive. Matthew 7 says to ask, seek, and knock. Seekers are the finders. The Lord makes paths straight, but straight does not mean quick or easy. Jesus proves that in the garden when he prays, “Not my will, but yours be done.” His path was painful, but it was clear, and it was worth it. Christ not only directs the path. Christ is with his people on the path.
