God Knows Everything: Trusting His Sovereign Plan

God’s omniscience means that nothing catches Him off guard. COVID, masks, checkpoints, vaccines, bad attitudes, online church, compromise, and all the ridiculous stuff that came with that season were never outside His sight or beyond His plan. God knew the beginning from the end before any person knew what was happening, and no virus, demon, bad theology, or human failure can mess up what He has spoken. Jesus went to the cross, Jesus will return, and that victory is final and certain.

Psalm 139 brings that truth right down close: “You have searched me, Lord, and you know me.” David declares that God knows sitting and rising, thoughts from far away, every word before it reaches the tongue, and every way a person walks. God knows social security numbers, hairs on heads, memories long forgotten, acts of kindness, words held back, and all the stuff people would rather hide. Sin forgiven by Jesus is not being held against His people, but nothing is unknown to the One who knows them completely.

Psalm 139 also says that God created the inmost being and knitted each person together in the womb. God saw the unformed body, ordained every day, and thinks thoughts more numerous than sand. His knowledge reaches beyond one life or one hard moment. God sees the whole picture: billions of lives, all of history, every future day, and every piece that must fit together for His good, right, loving purposes to come to fruition.

David’s cry against wickedness turns inward with “Search me, God.” The psalmist asks God to deal with evil, but then asks God to expose any offensive way in his own heart. That is the place of surrender. God knows the wickedness out in the world, but God also knows the agitation, anger, anxiety, and ugly reactions that rise up inside.

The annoyance stirred by a puppy making a mess can become more than a bad moment. That irritation can uncover an old ugly thing in the heart that is not like Jesus. The puppy is not the enemy; the anger is. Abiding in Jesus makes room for honest self-examination, and God crushes the enemy where it actually has a foothold. Jesus has already won the victory on the cross, and the call is to remain in Him with more intentionality, becoming more like Him day after day.
