Religion is not something a person picks up, hangs on a shelf, or merely feels in the heart. Religion is a way of life, a moral compass, and a life lived according to the gospel of Jesus Christ. Going to church belongs in religion, but going to the church building alone does not make anybody religious.
James gives the plain definition: “Pure religion and undefiled before God” means visiting the fatherless and widows in their affliction and keeping oneself unspotted from the world. Religion, then, shows up in service to people and in a life that will not go along with the world. Jesus rejects worship that rests on commandments of men, no matter how good those ideas may sound.
The New Testament stands as the only creed and code for the church of Christ. Acts shows disciples coming together upon the first day of the week to break bread, and Hebrews commands Christians not to forsake the assembly. Paul commands men to “preach the word,” not dreams, visions, or whatever somebody says God laid on his heart. God’s word must be spoken as the oracles of God, because those who speak for God bear responsibility for every word that may lead somebody right or lead somebody astray.
The gospel cannot be changed by adding to it or taking from it. Paul calls another gospel a perversion, even if an angel from heaven were to preach it. Christ says that not everyone who calls Him Lord will enter heaven, but the one who does the will of the Father. Obedience does not earn God’s grace, but grace teaches Christians to deny ungodliness and worldly lusts and to live soberly, righteously, and godly in this present world.
God required Israel to fear Him, walk in His ways, love Him, serve Him, and keep His commandments. Jesus gives the same truth when He says, “If ye love me, keep my commandments.” Love for Christ cannot be separated from obedience to Christ. Service to the hungry, thirsty, stranger, naked, sick, and imprisoned is service rendered unto Christ Himself.
Christ became the author of eternal salvation unto all them that obey Him. The gospel calls sinners to hear, believe, repent, confess Christ, and be baptized for remission of sins. Baptism puts a person into Christ’s body, but living the Christian life is what religion is all about. Blessed are those who do His commandments, for they have right to the tree of life and may enter into the gates of the city.

Key Takeaways
- 1. Religion must become a way of life. James refuses to leave religion in the church house or in somebody’s feelings. Pure religion touches afflicted people and keeps a Christian from being spotted by the world. A religion that never changes how a person treats others or lives before God is not the religion Scripture describes. [21:18]
- 2. God’s word cannot be replaced. Paul commands men to preach the word, not private ideas, dreams, or what sounds good to a crowd. Speaking for God is a serious matter because false words can lead souls in the wrong direction. God receives the glory when His word, rather than man’s opinion, governs what is said and done. [26:34]
- 3. Love for Christ requires obedience. Jesus does not define love as a religious claim or an emotional experience. Jesus says that those who love Him keep His commandments. Obedience is not cold rule keeping when it comes from love, because Christ promises to make Himself known to those who keep His word. [36:42]
- 4. Grace teaches a changed life. Grace does not give permission to remain in ungodliness and worldly lusts. Titus says grace teaches Christians to live soberly, righteously, and godly right now in this present world. Salvation belongs to Christ, but Christ is the author of eternal salvation unto those who obey Him.
